H. J. LEWIS REFUSE CONTAINER Filed Sept. 1922 Patented Dec. 3Q, 1924.
UNITED STATES HENRY J. LEWIS, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
REFUSE CONTAINER.
Application filed September To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY J. LEWIS, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee 5 and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Refuse Containers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention relates to improvements in refuse containers, such as garbage cans and the like, and has primarily for its object the provision of means for disinfecting the contents of the container and eliminating obnoxious odors.
A more specific object is to provide a container of the above character with a dis infectant receptacle positioned in its bottom, whereby the fumes from the disinfectant may permeate the contents of the container.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character, which is constructed as a single unit and therefore adaptable to conventional types of containers without altering their design or construction.
A still further object resides in the provision of means accessible from the top of the container for filling the receptacle with disinfectant material, from time to time as required.
WVith the above and other objects in View, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claim, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the herein disclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawing is illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of the present invention constructed according to the best mode so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof, and in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan View of a container equipped with the present invention, and
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Referring now more particularly to the 18, 1922. Serial No. 588,907.
accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 designates a conventional type of container of cylindrical shape. provided with a disinfectant receptacle 2 positioned within its bottom adjacent the side wall. The receptacle 2 is constructed in the shape of a sector, thus requiring a small space in the 0011- tainer and at the same time affording a comparatively wide distribution of the disinfectant material.
The top of the receptacle is provided with a perforated cover 3 to permit escape of the fumes from the disinfectant, which fumes permeate the contents of the container. In order to prevent the refuse fro-m coming in contact with the perforated cover and clogging said perforations, a. shield 4 is provided, which shield Fis spaced above the cover and supported along one edge by the arcuate wall of the receptacle, and in the front by means of a bracket 5.
To facilitate filling of the receptacle 2, the same is provided with a vertical filling pipe 6 communicating with the cover 3 and extending upwardly to a point adjacent the top of the container. The top of the filling pipe is provided with a closure cap 7 which normally prevents the escape of the disinfectant fumes through the pipe. An attaching bracket 8 surrounds the filling pipe 6 and is secured to the container, thus rigidly supporting the pipe. The receptacle may be secured in any suitable way to the container, such as soldering or Welding.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that a very simple and economical device has been provided, wherein the contents of the container may be thoroughly permeated by the fumes passing through the perforated cover of the receptacle, thus tho-roughly disinfecting the contents and eliminating or removing obnoxious odors.
Attention is further directed to the provision for filling the receptacle with disinfectant, whereby this operation is made comparatively simple and can be performed without necessitating the removal of the contents of the container.
I claim:
A disinfecting device adapted to be positioned wholly within a cylindrical container, said device containing a bottom portion 0011- sisting of a sector shaped receptacle having a. perforated top, a shield secured to the curved edge of said receptacle and free therefrom adjacent the straight edge thereof, said shield being spaced upwardly 5 from said perforated top, and a vertical pipe extending .upwardly from adjacent such curved edge and communicating with said receptacle, said pipe having a cap at its upper end.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin. I
HENRY J. LEWIs.
