CUTTING IMPLEMENT.

To all whom t may concern;

Be it known that I, CrrAnLnsy Hanni-rr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Cutting Implements, of which. the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.

The present invention relates to a cutting implement in which a pair of knives arel mounted to cut in parallel relationship, together with means by which the distance between the knives may be definitely regulated.

The device is particularly intended for use as a candy cutter, same being used in connection with the cutting of soft candy, such as fudge; however, this forms no limitation upon its use for other purposes.

Reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which Fig. 1 is a top plan View; Fig. 2 is a side elevation; Fig. 3 is a. partial top plan View showing a modified structure; Fig. e is a partial side elevation showing a modified construction.

Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates` what may be described as a U-shaped frame member which is conveniently made out of metal having a flat central portion and upstanding sides. To this member' 1 is adapted a handle which is indicated at 1a, this handle being secured in any desired manner.

Co-operating with the frame member 1 is a U-shaped support 2, this support preferably comprising an end member 2a and side members 2b. Extending between the side members 2b and spaced from each other are two spacer rods 3 and 4l, these members being secured to the sides 2b in any desired manner, but rigidly secured so as to definitely, form a. rigid structure.

The U-shaped member' 2 is pivotally mounted upon the frame 1 and this is accomplished by means of short bolts such as indicated at 5 which extend through suitable openings formed .in the side members 2* of the member 2, and in the upstanding sides of the frame 1. Nuts 6 co-operate with the bolts 5 so that the member 2 may be adjusted with respect to the frame member 1.

Between the side members 2b of the me1nber 2 there are supports which are indicated at 7 and 8, these supports being provided with openings through which extend the Yupper side of the knife.

opposite ends of which are provided with a left hand and a right hand screw respectively. Cine end of the member 11 is mounted for turning movement in one of the side members 2h while in the other end of this member it extends through an opposite side member 2b and is provided with a me1n ber 12 that has a flat upstanding rib 13 which may be grasped by the fingers of a user so as to give turning movement to the screw 11. On the screw are two oppositelv disposed interiorly threaded sleeves i These sleeves being fastened to the support ing members 7 and 8 so that as the sleeves are extended to move longitudinally with respect to the member 11 by the turning thereof, they will cause corresponding move-- ment of the supporting members 7 and 8 toward or from each other.

At the outer ends of the supporting members 7 and 8 there is mounted a threaded stud 15 which upon the threaded end thereof has a nut 16. The sleeves 10 are notched out as indicated at 10Z1 and are adapted to receive the slotted end 17 of a cutting knife 18. This knife is also provided with a second slot indicated at 19 which is in the rlhis slot is adapted to co-operate with one of the studs l5 and the knife is mounted by passing the slot 17 into co-operation with the notched portion of the member 10 and the slot 19 into co-operation with the stud 15, thereupon the nut 16 is tightened, thus securely holding the knife in position.

The construction by which the second knife is mounted and held is precisely the same as that which has been just described.

The knife is used by grasping the handle 2 and pressing the points of the knife into the object to be cut with the various parts which have been described in the position shown in F ig. 2. By virtue of the pivotal connection between the frame 1 and the U-shaped member 2, the angularity of the handle with respect to the cuttingknives may be adjusted to :suit the desire vof the user. v

In the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the parts which are there shown are precisely the same as in the above described construction, with the exception that in the form shown in Figs. 3 and e, there is secured on the outside of each of the members :7 and 8 anadditionalpart which adapts vthe device for vuse with thin lathed cutting knives.

A `cutting implement comprising a frame having side members, parallel trans- 'e versely extending bars between and mount-` least one 'of said knife supports being mounted upon the said .cross bars so that the support may slide thereon, anda screw member journaled in a side member of the frame co-operating with a threaded portion of said knife support whereby it may beadjusted as to its position upon said bars.

3. A .cutting implement comprising a frame having sidemembers, a pair of parallel vtransversely extendingnbars l.which at their 'ends areniounted in :the side. members of the frame, a pair of knife supports each of which is mounted upon the said bars and adapted to slide theron, and means carried by the side members of the frame and engaging the said knife supports to adjust the same lwith respect toeach other.

4. A cutting implement comprising a frame having side members, va pair of parallel. transversely extending bars whichiat their endsare mounted lin the side. `members offthe frame, a pair-ofknife supports'which are. mounted .uponthe saidfbars and :adapted :to slide vfthereon, a double threaded screw mounted at its opposite ends in :the side members of the aframe, one ofthe threads on the screw having engagement with athreaded portion of one of .the'knife:supports,-and the other threads .on .the screw having en.- gagement with a threaded portion of the otherknife support whereby ithe knife supports may be simultzuieouslyv moved toward and away from each other.

5. A cutting implement comprising a handle portion, a frame adjustably mounted upon said handle portion tov vary the angular relationship between .the frame andlthe handle, apair of cutting .knives rigidlysecured to said frame and means for adjustingllthe cutting knives inthe frame.

6. A cutting implement comprising a'handle portion, a yU-shaped member secured to the handle portion, a frame having portions pivotally mounted 'on -ithe sides of .the ,-U- shaped member, a pair of knives rigidly secured in said frame, and means for adjusting the saidknives with respect to leach other.

7. A cutting implement comprising a frame, a pair of knife supports carried by said frame and adjustable toward and from each other, each of said knife supports having a knife holder comprising a member with a diagonal slot, a knife yextending through vsaid slot, and means for holding said knife in adjusted position in the slot.
