E. E. M CZAMIS STIRRUP Filed Dec. 11, 1922 Z M 5 E.E.Mc6'amia INVENTOR v ATTOR N EY WITNESS:
EGBEBT E. MOCAMIS, OE GQWER, MISSOURI.
STIRRUP.
Application filed December 11, 1922. Serial No. 606,225.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Earner L. ltloCAMis, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gower, in the county of Clinton and State of Missouri, have invei-i cd new and useful improvements in Stirrups, of which the 'lollowing is a specification.
An object or this invention is to produce a stirrup of a construction which will permit 'a rider removing his foot therefrom, or rather having his foot automatically moved therefrom in the event of the rider becoming thrown by an unruly animal so that the rider will not be dragged on the ground by the animal, and consequently injuries resultfrom such incident etlectively overcome.
To the attainment of the foregoing, and other objects which will present themselves as the nature of the invention is better understood, reference is to be had to the drawing which accompanies and which forms part of this application.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved stirrup.
Figure 2 is an end view thereof.
Figure 3 is a side elevation, with parts broken away and parts in section.
The stirrup, in its entirety, is broadly indicated by the numeral 1, the same including a foot rest or base 2 having an integral. side 3 formed with a laterally extending eye 4: which projects over the foot or base portion 2 and is formed by bars as shown in Figure 3 of the drawings.
The lower bar of the eye is indicated by the numeral 5 and the same is arranged at an upward and outward angle from the side 3 while the upper bar 5 extends at right angles thereto. F or distinction, the outer reduced end wall of the eye is indicated by the numeral 6, the same having at its lower edge a centrally arranged notch 7.
By reference to the drawings it will be seen that the foot or base portion 2 has its outer end terminating appronimately in a line with the center of the eye and also that the said base is provided with a rounded socket 8 (Figure 3). In this socket there is received the cross sectionally rounded stem 15 which projects from the end of a base or foot extension 9. lhe stem 15 is provided with an annular depression 16, and there is passed transversely through the foot portion 2 a pin 17 that enters the said depres sion whereby the section 9 is held from longitudinal movement with respect to the base 2, and also whereby the section 9 is permitted to revolve thereon.
The revoluble section 9 has its outer end provided with an upwardly directed angle extension 18, the outer end oi which being preferably bifurcated to receive therein a lug 10 secured by a pivot 11. The lug 10 is formed upon the lower end of the movable side of the stirrup. The movable side is really in the nature of a gate, and will hereinatter be so referred to. The gate is indicated by the numeral 12 and has its tree end centrally provided with a lug extension 13 to be received in the notch 7 and to be held therein through the medium of a spring 14L which is angle shape in formation as shown, the lower angle portion of which, indicated by the numeral 19, is secured by means 20 to the lower face of the revoluble base section 9, the opposite angle end resting against the outer face of the portion 18 and being also, of course, in contact with the outer face of the gate 12.
From the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawing, it will be apparent that should a rider be thrown from his mount, his foot will be guided by contact with the bar 5 against the gate 12, swinging the gate to open position, and permitting the gate, with the element 9, to turn on the fixed base or foot portion 2 of the stirrup, thus releasing the foot of the rider from the stirrup and consequently avoiding the rider being dragged on the ground by the animal thereby allowing him to escape injuries which would otherwise result from such event.
Having described the invention, 1 claim A stirrup of the character described coinprising a base including a foot rest having an integral side formed thereon and a socket at its other end, a right angle extending bar projecting from the upper end of the side and being adapted to form the upper portion of an eye, an upwardly inclined bar extending from the side and forming the lower portion of the eye, an upstanding extension formed on the inclined bar and being pro vided with a socket in its lower end, a guide forming the opposite side of the stirrup and a portion of the bottom thereof respectively, said guide including a pair of pivotally associated members, a lug projecting from the upper end of the upper pivoted member anc being adapted to be received in the socket of the'upst'anding extension, 21 roundedsbem of the stein, and a spring secured too-the last; projecting from the "free Lend of the lower mentioned pi Voted member and bearing pivoted member and provided at its end against its companion member as and for the 10 portion with an annular depression adapted purpose specified.
to be received in the socket o'fthe'foot rest, 'In testimony whereof I afiix my signaa pin passing through the foot rest andereture.
ceived in the annular depression in the end EGBERT E. MOCAMIS.
