To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GIUSEPPE l v iannssicnocitizen 071 Italy, residing at Bronx, in the county of lVestchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and usetul Improvements .in Radiator-Heating Devices for Automobiles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a preheater tor automobile radiators whereby the water in the radiator may be heated to facilitate starting a cold engine, the invention having tor an object the provision of a novel and simple device of this sort which can be readily applied to any radiator, a further object relating to the provision of means for automatically stopping the heater .when the water has been suiiiciently heated.
For further comprehension of the inven tion, and of the objects and advantages there of, reference will be had to the it'ollowing description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Fig. 1 of the drawing is an axial sectional view of my improved device.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a like view to Fig. 1 but showing a modification.
As here embodied my improved device comprises a cylindrical shell which is open at both ends and which is formed with a head 11 adjacent which is an exteriorly threaded neck portion 12 which may be screwed into a suitable aperture in the radiator, a part of which latter is indicated at 13. The shell 10 is closed at its outer end by a plug 15 of porcelain or the like which may be retained in place by a set screw 16. This plug has fixed therein a pair of contact posts or rods 18 which project from the plug into the shell, and which are adapted to have the lead wires from the usual battery connected thereto. The inner ends of these posts form guides for what I may term a heating bolt which comprises the alined end members 20 and 21 which are separated "from one another by an intermediate portion in the form of a pair of spools 22. Fixed to the bolt at the juncture of the intermediate and end portion are elongated discs 24 of insulating material which are bifurcated or formed with notches at opposite ends as at 25 to freely straddle Serial No. 685,310.

The bolt may be urged downwardly to ensure of contact of the parts 2?) and 26 by means ol a weal: expansion spring 32 located in a recess 33 in the plug l5, into which the upper part 20 of the bolt projects the spring hearing against said upper part.
The shell 10 is ClOSQC at its inner or lower end by means of a screw cap 35 formed on its upper face with a central recess 36 in which the lower bolt element 21 is slidablv engaged while an annular recess 3'? may be cut into the said cap from the bottom then of. (line or more small openings 38 may lead into the recess 36 in the cap The outer ends of the posts 18 may be suitably arranged for the connection oi wires from the battery of the auton'iobile, being here indicated as formed with sockets to receive the tips d0 on the ends of plug elements ll carried in a detachable insulating disk 42 to which plug members a pair of wires such as 43 are connected.
When a cold engine to be started the water in the radiator may be readily heated. by means of my improved device which i automatically thrown out of operation when the water has been sui iciently heated to generate steam enough in the recess 36 to raise the bolt and so lift the contacts from the lingers 28.
While I have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment oi? my invention ii is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein shown. and that various changes and modifications might be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Leo ters Patent of the United States is as tollows:
electric heater for automobile radiators comprising a shell adapted to be secured in the wall of the radiator, plugs closing the inner and outer ends of said shell, a heating bolt in the shell comprising an intermediate spool portion, and end portions engaging in recesses in said plugs, a heating coil surrounding said spool portion, contact posts fixed in the outer plug, said contact posts extending downward into the interior of the shell and having inturned fingers on their lower ends which support the said bolt and make electrical contact with the ends of the said coil.

An electric heater for automobile radiators comprising a shell adapted to be secured in the wall of the radiator plu s closing the inner and outer ends'of the shell, a heatin coil inthe shell comprising an intermediate spool portion, and end portions engaging in recesses in the said plugs, a heating'coil surrounding the said intermediate spool portion, and contact posts fixed in the outer plug and having inturned fingerson' their lower ends that support the bolt and make electrical contact with the ends of said coil, said contact posts being formed with sockets in their upper ends to receive plugs on a current supply device.
3. An electric heater for automobile radiators comprising a shell adapted to be secured in the wall of the radiator, plugs closing the inner and outer ends of the said shell, a heating bolt in the shell comprising an intermediate spool portion, and end portions engaging in recesses in said plugs, contact posts fixed in the outer plug, said contact posts extending downward into the interior of the shell and having inturned fingers on their lower ends which project under the said intermediate portion of the bolt to support the latter and make electrical contact with the ends of said coil, and bifurcated heads on the said bolt freely straddling the said posts.
