Patented Apr. 10, 1928.
UNITED STATESl CHARLES SL ACKLEY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
'APPAnArUsFoR WAvINe HAIR.
Application led March 25, 1926. Serial No. 97,186.
This invention relates to a device for curling or Waving hair.
Many types of devices have been developed tor placing curls, waves or transformations in hair, but the use of such devices has very often caused the hair to be burned or scorched and in some cases the hair has been permanently injured.
This invention has for its salient object to provide a device of the character described that will produce, a lasting waveor curl in the hair without injuring or burning the hair..
-Further objects of the invention will appear from the following specification taken in connection with'the drawings, which forni a part ot this application, and in which lig. l is a longitudinal sectional elevation ot a curling rod constructed in accordance with the invention; and
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. l but showing a slightly modified form ot the device.
rlhe invention briefly described consists of a curling rod or hair waving device having a heating element disposed centrally therein and preferably mounted on an asbestos core. rlhe heating element is surrounded by a tube formed ot metal, porcelain or other suitable material spaced from the element and the tube is in turn surrounded by a perforated sleeve termed of suitable material which is spaced trom the tube. The beating element may consist ot a high resistance wire and a connecting terminal may be provided at each end ot the rod, or both ends ot the vvire may be led through a single terminal. ln the slight modiiication of the invention shown in Fig. 2, the inner tube is surrounded by absorbent material, such as asbestos, Further details of the invention will. appear from the following description.
in the Yiiorm oit the invention illustrated in lfig. l, a high resistance wire l is coiled around a core ll ot insulating material, such as asbestos, and the two ends ot the vvire are secured respectively in plugs l2 and The coils oil the high resistance vvire l0 are surrounded by insulating material, such as sheath l5 of asbestos, and the sheath l5 is turn surrounded by a tube i6 formed ot meta, porcelain or other suitable material. ln particular orms of the inven-s tion illustrated, the two ends ot the 1d are screw threaded as shown at Il i8 and caps and 21, preferably formed of insulating material, such as hard rubber or papier mch or bakelite.
The perforated sleeve is mounted at its ends on the inner ends of the caps 20 and 2l and, as clearly illustrated, this sleeve is spaced from the tube 16.
In the form of the invention illustrated in ing or sheath 30 of absorbent material will i absorb or take up such liquid. The hair can then beWound around the rod or device and` when the terminals 12 and 13 are connected to a source of current the heat from the resistance wire will torce the moisture outwardly through the hair..
It will be evident from the construction of the device that all danger of scorching or burning the hair has been avoided by providing an air space in the device between the tube lo containing the heating element and the" pertorated sheath 25..
Although cert-ain specic embodiments oit the invention have been particularly shown and described, it will be understood that the invention is capable of modification and that changes in the'construction and in 'the arrangement, ot the various cooperating parts may be made withoutv departing trom the spirit or scope of the invention, as expressed vin the following claims..
What claim is:
l. A hair Waving device comprising heating element, insulating means surrounding said element,a tube surrounding said insulating means, a covering of absorbent material on said tube, and a perforated sheath surrounding and spaced from said tube and covering.
2. A device ot the character described comprising a coil of high resistance heating vvire, a core ot insulating material in said coil, a sheathy ot insulating material surrounding said coil,y a tube surrounding said insulating sheath, a sleeve ol absorbent material surrounding said tube and a pertorated sheath surrounding`1 and spaced from said tube and Covering.
3, A. device of the character described comprising a coil of hi h resistance heatirug` Wire, a core of insulating material in said coil, a sheath ol: insulating material surrounding said coil, a tube surrounding said :insulating sheath, a covering oit absorbent material on said tube, and a perforated sheath surrounding and spaced trom said tube and covering.,
l5 la A hair eurler device comprising a heat- Lettonie ing element, a tube surrounding and insu lated from said element, a covering of absorbent material around said tube, and a perforated sheath surrounding and spaced trom said tube and tube cover-ino.
51A device oi' the character described comprising a tube having threaded ends, a heating element in Said tube, a cap threaded on each end of the tube and a perforated sheath supported at its ends on said caps and spaced from said tube.
ln witness whereof, l have hereunto set my hand this 23d day ot March, i926.
CHARLES S. ACKLEY.
