IBUBIAL VAULT.
Application ma March 7, 1924. Serial in. 697,590.
This invention relates to caskets especially adapted for burial purposes.
. A further object is An important object of this invention is to provide aburial casket wherein an inner layer of sheet metal is surrounded by an outer layer of cement and wherein a slow drying composition is arranged between the layer of sheet metal and the cement to firm ly unite the cement and the layer of sheet metal to provide an absolutely impervious structure and one which will positively.ex elude dampness and insects of various kinds. 1
to provide a burial casket having a novel form of connection between the cover and the body," 'which cover will be absolutely moisture and insect proof,
A further object of the invention is to provide a burial casket which is of highly simplified construction, neat in appearance and cheap to manufacture. I
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description. a i I In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Fig. 1 is a planuview of the improved casket with the cover applied;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 2--2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a detailed sectional view illustrating the means to connect the cover to the body;
Fig. at is a sectional view, the cover being elevated and the view being taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 1. I
In the drawing'wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown'a preferred embodiment of the invention, numeral 5 designates a sheet metal lining arranged in the form of a coifin and having side walls, the upper edges of which are extended outwardly and are formed with channels '6 for the race tion of a continuous tongue 7 of the meta lining 8 of the cover 9. The lining "5 is completely surrounded by a concrete body 12 and a slow drying composition 14 is confined between the concrete body 12 and lining 5 and when this composition dries it firmly unites the concrete body with the linin and positively prevents the entrance o? moisture. The composition 14 is preferably formed of linseed oil, tar, white lead and asphalt and when it dries it forms a hard layer which adheres to the metallic lining 5 and the concrete body. it enters the concrete body 12 and thereby renders the same impervious to moisture.
Particular attention is directed to Fig.
A's-the linseed oil gradually dries 5 'which illustratesthat the upper edge of the concrete body is protected by a transversely curved cover strip 20 having an "angularly projecting flange 22 which is imbedded in the cement and which flatly engages the outer wall of the channel memer 6 whereby to completely conceal and protect the upper edge of the cement or concrete body.
The cover 9 is in the nature of a concrete body and is securely joined'with the metallic lining 8 by means of a plastic composition 24 of linseed oil, tar, white lead and asphalt and; this composition will take uite awhile to dry. The linseed oil beore drying will penetrate the concrete body 9 and therefore render the same absolutel water proof.
As ihustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 the metal 10 is formed with a downwardly projecting bend defining a tongue 7 and with an ,upwardly projecting bend to define the combined reinforcing and attaching flange 30.
It is, however, to be noted that the flange 30 is curved transversely and is imbedded in the concrete cover 9 so as to securely 8 is transversely curved as indicated at 32 to conform to the curvature of the cover member 20 so that the casket will be securely sealed when the cover is applied.
In use a slow drying plastic is placed in the channel member 6 and the entrance of the tongue 7 into the channel member will cause a portion of the plastic to squeeze out between the cover plate 20 and to form a secure seal.
When the cover is applied the air pressure will' be around twenty or thirty pounds and will act to force the slow drying plastic the edge portion 32 and lodge there so as to a position between the cover' plate 20 and the edge portion 32. This positively excludes dampness that causes the remains placed in the coflin to be perserved for an indefinite period.
In carrying out the invention a continu-.
the lining being provided with an out-v wardly arranged depending channel shaped member, and a cover plate arranged on the 2-5 upper edge of the body and engaged with the outer wall of the channel member and 'being provided with an anchoring flange imbedded in the concrete member.
2. A casket comprising a concrete body,
a sheet metal lining for thebody, a slow drying composition arranged between the body and the lining the upper portion of the lining being provided with an outwardly arranged depending channel shaped member, and a cover plate arranged on the upper edge of the body and engaged with the outer wall of the channel member, being provided with an anchoring flange imbedded in the concrete member and a cover having a continuous depending flange received in said channel member. a
3'. A casket comprising a concrete body, a sheet metal. lining arranged within the body and having its upper edge provided with a depending channel shaped member, a cover plate mounted on the upper edge of the body and engaging the outer wall of the channel member,,said cover plate belng provlded with an anchoring flange im-.
bedded in the body, a plastic composition between the linin and the body, and a cover having a linmg'provided with a depending tongue received in said channel member, said lining of the cover being pro- .vided with a transversely curved inwardly extending. anchoring flange overhanging said tongue and imbedded in the'- material of the cover.
4. A casket comprismg a concrete body,
7 a sheet metal lining arranged within the body and having its upper edge provided with a depending channel shaped member, a cover plate mounted on the upper edge of the body and engaging the outer wall of the channel member, said cover plate being provided with an anchoring flange imbedded in the body, a cover having a lining provided with a depending tongue received in said channel member, said lining of the cover being provided with an inwardly extending transversely curved anchoring flange overhanging said tongue I and imbedded in the material of the cover, and a reinforcing rod defined between said flange and said tongue.
5. A casket comprising a concrete body,
a sheet metal lining arranged within the body vand'having its upper edge provided with a depending channel shaped member, a cover plate mounted on the upper edge of the body and engaging the outer wall of the channel member, said cover plate being provided with an anchoring flange imbedded in the body, a cover having a lining provided witha depending -tongue received in said channel member, said lining of the cover being provided witha transversely curved anchoring flange overhanging said tongue and imbedded in the materlal of the cover, a reinforcing rod defined between said flange and said tongue, said flange being provided with spaced openings, and hooks adapted for movement-through said openings to engage said rod.
6. A casket comprislng a cone ete body, a sheet metal lining arranged within the body and having its upper edge provided witha depending channel'shaped member a cover plate mounted on the upper edge of the body and engaging the 'outer wall of the channel member, said cover plate being provided with an anchoring flange imbedded in the body, a cover having a lining provided with a depending tongue received in said channel member, said lining of the cover being provided with a transversely curved anchoring flange overhanging said tongue and imbedded in the material of the cover, a reinforcing rod defined between said flange and said tongue, said flange being provided -with spaced openings, hooks adapted for movement through said openings to en age said rod, the outer edge portion of t e lining of said cover being adapted to-flatl contact with the cover plate of the b0 y.
