UNlTED S-TATES JAMES D. MONIE, OF SCRANTON, PENNSYLVANIA BURIAL VAULT.
Application filed August 12, 1927. Serial 1W0. 212,545.
This invention relates to improvements in burial vaults, particularly of the sealed and water-proof type.
An objectof this invention is to provide a burial vault having a main body portion and cover section adapted to be brought auto matically into interlocked relationship whenever the cover is placed in position.
Another object of this invention is to provide a water-proof and sealed burial vault having elements which may be easily brought into assembled relationship and sealed or grouted together by means of hot pitch, cement or other suitable material, special means being provided in the vault for admitting the sealing material.
Other objects of this invention will appear from the following detailed description of the device and as disclosed in the two sheets of drawing which are herewith made a part of this application.
In the drawings Figure 1 illustrates a perspective view of the burial vault showing the different elements in assembled and interlocked relationship.
Figure 2 represents a sectional view of Figure 1, taken along line 2 2.
Figure 3 illustrates a sectional view of Figure 1, taken along line 3-3.
Figure 4 illustrates a plan View of the main body portion of the burial vault disclosin the casket receptacle and the trough-shape element surrounding it.
Figure 5 illustrates a sectional view of the lower side edge of the burial vault showing the casket in position, the casket receptacle, cover and trough-shaped element being in assembled and operable relationship securely grouted or cemented together, in combination with the side wall of thegrave.
Numeral 1 designates a cover portion for the burial vault formed in such a manner that when brought into assembled relationship with the main body portion 2 of the burial vault, the side and end walls 3 and 4 will be spaced from the outside wall 5 and from the wall of the casket receptacle 6.
It is preferred in this invention to form, the main body portion 2 having a casket receptacle 7 surrounded by a trough-shaped portion 8, the inner surface of the outer Walls 5 of the trough-shaped portion 8 being provided with inwardly and downwardly extending resilient elements 9 for the purpose of firmly interlocking with the edges 10 of the cover portion 1 when the burial vault elements are brought into assembled relationship. The resilient elements 9 maybe made of any suitable material such as spring steel and riveted or held firmly in position by turning over the upper edge of the outside wall of the trough-shaped portion 8, as clearly disclosed at 11 in Figure 2. Thelower edge of the resilient member 9 will function to extend and hang freely within the trough 8 in such a manner thatwhen the cover portion has been lowered into position, an extending edge portion 12 thereof will function to interlock with the resilient member 9, thereby making it extremely inconvenient and diflicultto remove the cover.
After the casket 13 has been placed in the receptacle 7 and the cover portion 1 brought into assembled relationship with the main 'body portion, it is preferred, according to this invention, to seal against moisture and other elements by means of grouting the portions together. In order to accomplish this result in an eflicient manner, receiving spouts 14 for the material are positioned alon the outer wall 5 of the trough 8, and in or er to assure that the grouting material will spread within the space 15 between the cover wall and the casket receptacle wall 6, openin 16 are suitably located along the edge 0 the cover 1. Figure 5 clearly shows a section of the burial vault in interlocked, assembled and grouted relationship according to the principles of this invention, in combination with the walls of an ordinary grave 17. It is to be understood that the cover portion 1 may be fitted with suitable handles 18.
In operation, this invention provides a burial vault sealed against moisture and other elements. It is simple, eflicient and inexpensive. The top, when in position, is held securelyin place by means of resilient spring elements fastened to the side portions of the main body section of the vault. After the casket has been located within the casket receptacle, the cover is placed in position and hot pitch or other suitable grouting material is poured in the spouts designated until the sealing material comes up level with the top of the outside walls of the trough member. The holes in the cover portion will admit the pitch or material to flow through so as to form a firm sealing effect on both side of the cover walls. It is preferred to make the walls of the casket receptacle higher than the outside walls of the trough so that when the pitch is poured in and fills up on the outside, it will not run over the inside portion, damaging the casket. The vault may be made of steel, aluminum, brass or any other suitable material which will hold against'the dampness and other elements. Y
It is to be understood'that alterations and substitutions may be made in the above disclosure Within the scope of the appended claims without affecting the merits of this invention; What I claim is ing around the bottom thereof, with the top 7 edge of'said trough below the edge of said cont'ai'nena cover seated in said trough and having holes formed therein below the top edges of said container and trough, and
means for fastening said cover in said trough and including binding material in said trough extending through said holes into contact with said container;
2. In a burial vault, a container having imperf'orate walls and adapted to receive a casket, a trough extending around the said Walls'and having its top edge below the top edges of said Walls, a cover seated in said trough and having holes 'therethrough located below the top edges of said walls and said trough, shoulders formed on the outer faces of said cover, springs secured to the walls of said trough and engaging said shoulders to fasten said cover said trough, and binding material in said trough covering said springs and extending through said holes into contact with said container.
In testimony whereof I afiix ny signature.
JAMES D. MONIE.
