WFFEQE.
EPIFANIO V. N. TOMASULO, NOW BY JUDICIAL CHANG-E OF NAME NESTOR NICHOLAS TOT'EASULO, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
POWER HAIR CLIPPER.
Application filed January 6, 1922, Serial No. 527,454. Renewed May 5, 1924.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that EPIFANIO V. N. TOMA- sULo, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, has invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Power Hair Clippers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in hair clippers, and more particularly to that type of clipper which is automatically operated by a small electric motor.
An object of the invention is to provide a suitable automatic hair clipper which will be provided with a small electric motor for operating the cutter plate, and also provided with a fan or blower to keep the hair that is cut from clogging up between the fixed cutter plate and the oscillating cutter plate.
A further object of the invention is to provide an automatic hair cutter which will be electrically driven, and will be provided with clutch mechanisms to selectively operate the cutter plate at either end of the clipper.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a suitable double hair clipper, which will be positive in operation, and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings which constitute a part of my application,
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved hair clipper with the cover plate removed;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the hair clipper with cover plate in position;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4.& of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 55 of Figure 2;
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 2, and
Figure 7 is a detail view of the cam and end of yoke on the lever connecting the cutter plate.
Like characters ofreference will be used throughout the following specification to designate corresponding parts.
The clipper body 1 is approximately rectangular in cross section, and is provided with the spaced webs or partitions 2 which are formed integral therewith.
Positioned between the web portions 2 is a small electric motor 3, which is attached to the bottom of the casing at 4. The motor shaft 5 extends out beyond the ends of the motor and through the partitions 2, and have attached at their outer ends the toothed clutch heads 6 and T. l'livoted to the ears 8 on the casing l, are the bell crank lever yokes 9, which carry the oppositely disposed pins 10, which are free to move in the slots 11 formed around the clutch heads 6 and 7. The operating push buttons 12 are pivoted to the free ends of the bell crank levers 9, and extend through the side walls of the casing 1. Springs connect zhe bell crank lovers with the web parti tions 2, to normally hold the clutch members in disengagement.
A small fan or blower 1% is attached to the shaft 5 adjacent the motor 8, and acts to cool the motor when the clipper is in use, and also serves to keep the cutter plates clean from hair. The shaft 5 is passed through the hushings 15 in the partitions 2 and acts as bearings therefor.
Positioned between the partitions 2 and the ends of the clipper, are the standards 16, in which are mounted the shafts 17. Fixed to the inner ends of these shafts 17, are the clutch heads 18, which are adapted to be engaged by the clutch h ads 6 and 7, it being readily seen and understood that only one set of clutch members may be engaged at a time. The opposite ends of the shafts 1'? carry the cam members 19.
The tensioning caps 20, are provided with a thickened central portion 21, through which extends the vertical posts 22. These posts 22 are screw threaded at their opposite ends, and extend through the tension caps and also the oscillating cutter bars 23. Springs 2% are placed over the upper ends of posts 22, which tension the several parts, and hold them in their adjusted position. Nuts 25 screw down on to the springs 24, and keep them in position.
It will be noticed that the tension caps 20 are provided with upwardly curved top of the fixed cutterw pla'tes28, and have 7 motor positioned in said casing, and clutch attached thereto the outer ends of the oscillating' cutter bars 23. The cutter bars 23 are pivoted at their centers to the vertieal tension posts 22, and have their inner,
ends formed into yokes 81, which are engaged by the cams 19, in such a manner that an. oscillating motion may be transmitted to the said bars.
The oppositely disposed knobs 32 are formed-at the top of-the casing walls, and are: provided internally screw threaded sockets-33, to receive the screws which hold the. cover plate 34 in position on the easing 1'. The cover plate 34 is further provided: with the spaced partitions 35, which abutagainst the partitions 2, thereby reinforcing the said casing.
It willbe understood that many minor changes in detail of construction may be resorted to without departure from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. A power hair clipper comprising a hollow casing, angularly disposed cutter plates attached to the opposite ends of said casing, a motor positioned in said casing, and clutch mechanisms for selectively operating either end of said clipper. p
2. A power hair clipper comprising a casing, angularly disposed cutter plates at tached to the opposite ends of said casing, bracing means formed in said casing, a

7.'A power hair clipper comprising, a casing, downwardly extending curved portions formed at the ends of saidcasing, clipper elementsformed on the free ends of said' curved" portions, a motor in said casing, clutch mechanisms connecting said motor with said clipper elements, and a fan operable by said motor, the air from said fan circulating through salcl casing in such a manner as to follow the cont-our thereof.
8. A power hair clipper comprising a casing, angularly disposed clipper elements at the ends of said casin a motor, clutch 0 v I V J mechanisms positioned between said motor and clipper elements, means for operating said mechanisms. adjustable tension caps for said clipper elements, and a cover plate for said casing, substantially as described.
9. A power hair clipper comprising. a casing, angularly disposed clipper elements at the ends of said casing, a driving motor in said casing, means for selectively operating either clipper element or both at the same time, and means for cooling the working parts.
10. A power hair clipper comprising a casing, spaced partitions in said casing, a motor, clipper elements at the ends of said casing, means connecting said elements and motor, a cover plate for said casing, spaced partitions in said plate adapted to engage and coact with said partitions in said casing, whereby added strength will be-aiforded the casing.
11. 12. A power hair clipper comprising a easing, cooperating clipper elements supported on each end of the casing bearings Within the casing supporting a plurality of rotatable shafts in longitudinal alinement, means for converting the rotary motion of the shafts into reoiprocatory motion of the movable clipper elements, propelling means including mechanism whereby any of the said shafts may be selectively engaged and rotated.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
