To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we,Aiz'rHUR soN and ANDREW P. WERME, citizens of the United States, both residing at Worcester,
in the county of- Worcester /and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Power-Operated Tool-Casing, of the following is a specification.
which The principal objects of this invention are to provide av compact arrangement of gearing for driving a drill'or other tool from a the casing, to provide means for solidly lsupporting the shafts positively and at the same time strengthen the construction; and also provide abalanced construction to provide a construction made up of unitseach readily and independently removable and replaceable in case of repairs are needed; to provide a maximum of interchangeable elements; to provide in cooperation therewith an oscillating valve grinder the power for which is transmitted `through an element constituting a bearing for the drill shaft; and to provide improvements in the means for holding the valve grinder. 1'
Referenceis to be had to the accompanying drawings in which--v Figure 1 is a view of half of the framer casing with the front half removed, showing the interior parts in section taken along the yplane of the edges of the half frame;
Fig. 2 is a sectional viewon the line 2--2l -of Fig. 1 looking upwardly and giving a bottom plan view of the oscillating drive and parts of the other features;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the lower part of the device showing the chuck for the valve grinder; u
Fig. 4 is a Similar view of the drill chuck, and Fig. 5 is a sectional View on the line 5 5 ofFig. 1. t
The invention is shown as comprising a frame or casing consisting of two parts 10 detachably secured together in any desired manner as by screws entering the holes 9 andv each consisting of a casting having sev- PETTER-4 Specification of Letters-Patent. Patented Jun@ 117-, 11919. Appiication inea December 2', 191s. serial No. 265,046.
eral semi-circular webs 11, 12 and 13 cast therein 'wliich when fitted together meet along their edges and constitute'reinforcements for strengthening the casing and firm supports for bearings 39 for the several shafts. These bearings are non-circular outside and fit noii-rotatably in grooves in the edges of the webs. There is also an end 14 at the top which supports the shaft 16 at that end of the driving motor 15. Thisdriving shaft 16 is ,supported on the web 11 and end 14. It has a motor pinion 17 meshing with a gear 18 on a shaft '1,9 which is supported in all three webs 11, 12 and 13.
On' this shaft is a pinion 20 meshing with a gear 21 keyed to a central shaft 22 and driving it. On this shaft isa pinion or small gear 23 meshing with a gear 24 on a shaft 25 supported in the webs 12 and 13. This shaft .Carries an arm 26 on the end which has a longitudinal pin 27 connected by a link 28 with a head 29 on a sleeve 30. This sleeve 30 is mounted to oscillate in a bearing 31 on' the lower end of the casing,
The sleeve 3() has a bushing 32 insidey 10. it which receives the shaft 22. This shaft extends through the sleeve 32 -and is provided with a spindle 33 for receiving a drill chuck. This shaft is geared as will be obvious,` to rotate at a high speed, say for example about. 1800 revolutions per min-- ute. The sleeve 30 is geared up to oscilla-tc at a lower speed, as for example about 800 yoscillations per minute. The lower end 4of the bushing 32 is provided with a fiange 34 between whichand a flange 35 on the drill spindle are ball bearings 36. v
The sleeve 30 which is positively oscillated by the gearing as indicated, is provided with twopins 37 shown as projecting .diametrically to the edge of a flange 38 on said-sleeve which fits against the end of the frame.
When the device is to be used'for operating a drill without changing the gearing grinder a chuck 40 is applied.- This chuck.l Y
has a space at the top for receiving the drill chuck spindle 33 and means at the bottom fory securing the valve grinding tool to 1t and is provided with a spring-pressed ball 41 in a passage adapted to enter a notch of corresponding shape in the bottom of the sleeve 30 when the chuck is forced .up to the right osition. The top of this chuck is also provi( ed with notches 42 adapted at the same time to engage under the pins 37 so that the chuck is located by the ball 41 and driven positively by the pins 37. A screw 43 is also used to fasten the parts together in addition.
From this itwill'be seen that the usual difficulty in a motor driven drill of the portable type is avoided. This diiiculty is due to the fact that on account of the usual direct drive it was possible to press the drill against the work with sufficient force to stop it. By speeding the drill down this is avoided for all ractical purposes and in spite of the speed c ange mechanism the motor shaft 16 and the drill shaft 22 are in central position in the frame and in alinement with each other and are supported on rigid bearings constituting part of the frame or casing'ib self. Thus vibration and noise are avoided.
It will be seen also that when one half casing is removed the bearings are thereby unfastened and left in position supported in the open'grooves in the web of one half casing and all the mechanism is left, exposed. Each shaft with its gears and bearings 39 constitutes an independent unit which can ybe lifted out separately as a whole and replaced without disturbing the others. The gears also are so designed that there are only two kinds, those of each kind being interchangeable. These are matters of great im-I portance in practice. The webs across the 4 casing have finished meeting edge surfaces and form pockets between them which receive any oil or grease from the bearings, thus preventing it from flowing into the motor or on the commutator.
In combining the drill drive with the valve grinder drive there is no necessity for changing the former in any way according to this invention and the power for the drill is transmitted through aV central solid drill shaft which is supported in such a way as not to be likely to get out of alinement in practice; the necessity for adjusting a chuck for a drill so as to use it for the valve grinder is avoided also, and a smooth and convenient form of chuck for the latter is provided.
Although we have illustrated and described only a single form of the invention we are aware of the fact that modifications the details of construction herein shown and the casing and gearing removable'with said shafts for driving them from the motor.
