J. J. RIGBY DRAWING PRESS Filed June 26, 1923 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 By Attorneys Patented Dec. 16, 1924.
UNITED STATES JOHN J. RIGBY, F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
DRAWING PRESS.
Application filed June 26,
To all whomt't may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN J. RIGBY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drawing Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to drawing presses of the type in which the blank to be drawn is gripped between a yielding blank-holder and a tool on a movable slide, and aims to provide in'rn'ovements therein.
The invention provides a press of the type referred to in which the resistance to the movement of the blank-holder is uniform or constant throughout its movement, and in which the constant resistance may be regulated so as to be greater or less to suit the character of the drawing to be done. According to the invention, frictional means are provided for resisting the movement of the blank-holder, instead of elastic means heretofore generally employed.
The invention further provides a novel combination of elements constituting a press of the character described, including frictional means for resisting the movement of the blank-holder.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, partly in section, of a press embodying my in vention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section, running from side to side of the press, and on the line 11-11, Fi 3.
Fig. 3 is a view, mostly in plan, looking from the level indicated by the line 111- 111, Fig.
Fig. 41 is a sectional view on the line 1VIV, Fig. 3.
Fig. is av vertical sectional view illustrating a modification of the suspension means shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Referring to said drawings, numeral 10 indicates a forming tool carried by a reciprocatory slide 12, and adapted to coact with a complementary forming tool seated upon the bolster plate 17 of the press. he tool 10 and its slide 12 may be reciprocated in any suitable manner, as by means of a crank-shaft 20 through a pitman connection 21.
Numeral designates a yielding blank- 1923. Serial No. 647,808.
holder, adapted to coact with the reciprocatory forming tool to grip the margin of a blank X (Fig. during the drawing of said blank by the coaction of the drawing tools 10 and 15.
Friction means are provided for resisting the movement of the blank-holder by the said tool 10. These means are adapted to oppose a substantially uniform or constant resistance to the movement of said blank-holder by the said tool 10.
The friction means 30 preferably consists of one or more slides 32, and means for clamping or frictionally pressing upon said slide or slides.
The means for clamping the slide or slides 32 conveniently consists of a support 34 for said slides, and a clam ping plate 36, adapted to be drawn towards said support 34 by means of screws 38 or like, thereby clamping said slides 32 between the support 3 1 and the clamping plate 36, and thereby preventing movement of said slides 32, except under the action of a considerable force sufficient to overcome the frictional contact or binding force of said parts 34: and 36 on said slides 32.
1t has been found in practice to give greater uniformity of resistance to have the clamping plate 36, or said plate 36 and the support 34, bear upon said slides 32 through rollers 10 or rollers 10, 411. 1n such case a greater or less part of the friction is transmitted to the bearings of the rollers, which in the present instance are pins or shafts 44 passing through said rollers and supported in suitable holes drilled in said support 3 1 and plate 36.
In order to attain a fine adjustment of the clamping force of the plate 36 on the slides 32, it has been fount desirable to pro vide stops 18 between the said plate 36 and the support 34:. These stops 18 are preferably screw-threaded, and the fine adjustment of the clamping plate is effected by turning the threaded stops a8 in such manner as to take oil from the slides 32 some of the pressure exerted thereonby the screws 38, and transmitted thereto by the said clamping plate 1t will be understood that the clamping force acting on the slides 32, and hence the amount of resistance to the movement of said slides may be adjusted so as to be greater or less, by turning the screws 38. After this primary adjustment has been obmovement of said blank-holder, said friction means comprising a slide and means for clamping said slide, said clamping means comprising a pair of rollers bearing upon said slide.
6. A drawing press comprising a yielding blank-holder, a reciprocatory tool adapted to grip the margin of a blank between said blank-holder and tool for drawing the blank, and friction means for resisting the movement of said blank-holder, said friction means comprising a slide and means for clamping said slide, and a Wedge piece bearing against the end of said slide adapted to be driven by said blank-holder.
7. A drawing press comprising a yielding blank-holder, a reciprocatory to-ol adapted to grip the margin of a blank between said blank-holder and tool for drawing the blank, friction means for resisting the movement of said blank-holder, said friction means comprising a slide and means for clamping said slide, said clamping means comprising a roller bearing upon said slide, and a Wedge piece bearing against the end of said slide adapted to be driven by said blank-holder.
8. A drawing press comprising a yielding blank-holder, a reciprocatory tool adapted to grip the margin of a blank between said blank-holder and tool for drawing the blank, friction means for resisting the movement of said blank-holder, said friction means comprising a slide and means for clamping said slide, and means for resetting said slide.
9. A drawing press comprising a yielding blank-holder, a reciprocatory to-ol adapted to grip the margin of a blank between said blank-holder and tool for drawing the blank, and friction means for resisting the movement of said blank-holder, said friction means comprising a slide and means for clamping said slide, and means for reset-ting said slide, said means comprising a part actuated by said reciprocatory part.
10. A drawing press comprising a yielding blank-holder, a reciprocatory tool adapted to grip the margin of a blank between said blank-holder and tool for drawing the blank, and friction means for resisting the movement of said blank-holder, said friction means comprising a slide and means for clamping said slide, and means for resetting said slide, said means comprising a reciprocatory part having an incline for engaging the said slide and pushing it in the reverse direction to the push of said wedge.
11. A drawing press comprising a yielding blank-holder, a reciprocatory tool adapted to grip the margin of a blank between said blank-holder and tool for drawing the blank, friction means for resisting the move ment of said blank-holder, and means for varying the amount of resistance of said friction means, said latter means comprising a clamping device, and means for partly counteracting the clamping effect of said clamping device, to obtain a line adjustment of the latter.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name.
JOHN J. RIGBY.
