T0 aZZ whom z't may concer'n Be it known that L VVILLIAM Hanna, Junior, a subject of the King of Great Britain find Ireland, and a resident of Bury in the Count-y of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Iinprovements Connected with Steam Generators of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to steam generatoi's of tlie Lancashire, Cornish aiid like types set in nia-sonry and having external fiues.
The front wall of the setting of boilers of the types referred to is Set back or recessed below the boiler to lform a Chamber to clear and enelose the blow-off or mud Cook of the boiler. Owing to the more or less Continual presenCe of moisture in Said Chamber and on the walls thereof Coupled with the morements of the boiler Shell under expansion and Contraction, the joint between the walls of the Chamber and the boiler is liable to be impaired allowing leakage of the fiue gases and/or Cold air to be drawii into the lines from outside. ri`he object of the present invention is to provide means for inaintaining a tight joint between said wall or walls and the boilei' shell and So preventing leakage of the flue gases and/or Cold air passing from the outside into the flues.
According to the invention, I provide a yieldable joint-member or members shaped to lit against the boiler Shell and mounted to make a tight joint between same and the walls of the blow-off or mud cock Chamber. n conjunction with said yieldable joint member or members I may employ asbestos rope or other appropriate incombustible paoking.
l In the accompanying drawing, Fig. 1 is a transverse section of a generator of the kind referred to embodying one form of yielding oint between the 'walls of the blowofif or mud Cock Chamber aiid the boiler Shell the section being taken ap n'oxiinately along the line 1-1 of Fig. 2, Fig. 2 is a plan with the boilei` removed7 showing the jointmember and its guide arranged iii position on the top of the walls of the Chamber, Fiej. 3 is a part longitudinal section of the Chainber, the section being taken approxiinately along the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, but with the boiler in elevation, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the joint-member and its guide separated. Fig. 5 is an enlarged section of the joint-member and guide illustrating means which l may employ for faeilitating Serial No. 348,657.
the itnient thereof. Fig. 6 is a part sectional view illusti'ating the arrangement of spii'al Springs for pressing the joint-member against the boiler shell, and 7 is a milar view illusti'ating a modified arrangement of Springs.
Referring to the drawing, a is the boiler, Z) the blow-off or iiiud coCk at the front end thei'eof, and C the Chamber formed in the front wall (Z of the setting to Clear and enclose the Cook Z).
According to the illustrated way of Carrying the invention into practice, the walls of the Chamber c' are stoped short of the underside of the boiler shell and between the latter and the top of the walls t arrange a joint-member e and a guide wherein the joint-member is niounted and adapted to slide or yield vertically. The joint-member c and guide f are of approximately U shape in plan to conforin to the Shape of the Chamber c. The sides of the joint-member and guide are straight and their ends are Curved parallel to the radius of the boiler Shell. As shown best in Fig. 5, the guide f is of double channel of inore or less H section and the joint-member is formed with a tail portion el adapted to enter and slide in the upper channel fl of the guide, Springs being provided between the tail portioii el and the web of the guide to press the joint member upwards and against the boiler shell. Preferablj', and as shown best in Figs. 5 and 6, employ a plurality of spiral springs (j mounted on set-screws h which pass freely through the web f2 and are screwed into the tail portion el. l may, however, employ undulating bla-de Springs gl for pressing the joint-member against the boiler Shell, as shown in Fig. i", or any other appropi'iate arrangei'nent of Springs.
Asbestos rope or 'other appropriate packing t7' is preferably provided between the joint-member e and the boilei' Shelh the jointing face of the member being Conveniently arched or grooved to receive and position the packing. rl.`he Channels fi, 7*' of the guide may be packed with slag wool or other suitable packing 7a to prevent the fine gases escaping or cold air pr :sing through the guide.
For facilitatin the iitting of the devire, may provide at suitable points, holes in the tail portion c]- of the joint-member (z and the guide f for the insertion of cottere` or the like m, Fig. 5, to hold the joint meinfj U llO
bei" retracted While the device is being itted in position When the cotters or the like are Withdrawn.
It Will be seen that the joint-member e being pressed by the Springs is free to yield to and follow movements of the boiler Shell and any settlement or disturbance of the Walls of the chamber c.
AS will be obVious, instead of the jointinember being made in a Single piece, it may be made in Sections;` e. g., two side pieces and an end piece.
l/V hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
1. ln a steam generator, having a Shell and a Supporting wall With a reentrant portion for clearing a boiler blow off cocl, a .guide extending along the reentrant por'tion of the Wall, a closure member extending along the guide and carried thereby for moveinent toward and from the Shell to close the Space between the guide and Shell, means for yieldingly pressing the closure member toward the Shell, and deformable packing means carried by the cloSure meinber for actual engagement With the boiler Shell.
2. In a steam generator having a Shell and a supporting Wall With a reentrant portion in the end thereof for clearing a boiler blow-off cock, a guide extending along the upper face of the reentra-nt portion and having a. channel in its upper face, a cloSure member extending into the channel and Slidable therein toward and from the Shell to close the space between the guide and Shell, means for yieldingly pressing the closure member toward the Shell, and deformable packing means carried by the closure .member for actual engagement with the boiilei" Shell.
3. In a Steam generator having a Shell and a Supporting Wall With a reentrant portion in the end thereof for clearing a boiler blow-off cock, a guide eXtending along the upper face of the reentra-nt portion andha-V- ing a channel in its upper face, a closurc member' extending into the channel vand Slidable therein toWard and from the Shell to close the Space between the guide and Shell, means for yieldingly pressing the clo- Sure member toward the Shell, deforinable packing means carried by the closure member for actual engagement with the boiler Shell 'and additional packing means for pre- Venting Vleakage of air or gases through the channel and around the closure member.
In Witness Whereof I have hereunto Set my hand. p
