To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, ANDERS ANDERBERG, a subject of the King of Sweden, and residing at Malm, Sweden, county of Mal- Inhus, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Locomotive-Boilers and the like, of which the following is a clear and exact specification.
This invention relates particularly to a device for increasing the draft and getting a more complete and accelerated combustion in the fire box of a locomotive boiler and the like.
The invention is shown in the accompanying drawings and it will here be described with reference to the same.
Figure 1 shows a fire box in a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a cross-section thereof. Fig. 3 shows a part of another irebox in a vertical longitudinal section and on a larger scale, and Fig. 4 is a cross section through Ae-B in Fig. 3.
According to the invention one or more short pipes 1 are so arranged-that they debouch with their forward ends in the plate 4 directly under the cylindrical part of the shell plate and with their rear ends are fastened to the front firebox plate, z'. c. the tube plate 5. These pipes communicate with air passages in the fire bridge 3, which passages debouch in the forward edge or the upper or under side of the bridge. When the locomotive is running, air will be forced into the pipes 1, so that the rate of combustion will be increased and the products of combustion, carbonio oxid and the like will be subject to a complete combustion. In this way the air is heated when it comes in contact with the hot firebridge, and moreover the latter one is cooled down, so that it will be protected against too strong a heat. The draft through the pipes 1 may be regulated or wholly shut olf by means of a damper 10, that can be operated automatically or by hand from the drivers cab, and the draft can also be increased by means of steam pipes 11 placed in front of the pipes 1 and through which pipes steam or air is pressed into the pipes 1, for instance when stopping or in stationary boilers.
For preventingthat the pipes 1 loosen and thereby cause leaks in the places where they are connected with the boiler plate and the tube plate, on account of the temperature difference between the inner and outer sides of the pipes causing a shrinking of the pipes, the following arrangement is made.
rlfhe pipe 1 is fastened into the plates 4 and 5 in any known way, for instance by pressing or the like and its front end projects outside the plate 4. A pipe 6 of smaller diameter, the air pipe proper, is arranged inside of the pipe 1 and fastened into the same by means of rivets, screws or the like 8 passing through the projecting part 7 of the pipe l. A layer 9 of a bad conductor of heat, for instance asbestos, is applied between the pipes 1 and 6. By this arrangement the outer pipe will keep the temperature of the water in the boiler, while the inner pipe on both sides keeps the temperature of the air, and there is no danger of leaking. Moreover, the inner pipe will be very easily removed for repairs and the like, as it is only needed to loosen the easily accessible screws or rivets 8, whereafter the pipe 6 and the packing 9 can be taken out so that the pipe 1 becomes accessible.
As shown in Fig. 4 the air passages in the fire bridge are wider than the diameter of the air pipe 6 and also wider than the opening or openings 12, 13 in the free edge of the fire bridge where the air passes out into the fire box, so that the velocity of the air will be reduced in the fire bridge for the purpose of giving the same more time to be heated before it leaves the iir'e bridge.
What l claim is:
1. 1n a locomotive boiler the combination of a boiler, a fire box, a. fire bridge extending inward and upward from the front wall of the fire box at a point below Jhe boiler cylinder and provided with an air channel having an enlarged closed-wall chamber tapering upward from its lower front end adjacent to said front wall and said air channel also having discharge openings of smaller area than said chamber remote from said front wall, and a short straight air inlet pipe inserted in the boiler plate and the tube plate and opening at its front end into said enlarged chamber and at its rear end into the atmosphere underneath the cylindrical shell of the boiler.
2. 1n a locomotive boiler the combination of a boiler, a lire box, a fire bridge extending inward and upward from the front wall of the lire box at a point below the boiler cylinder and provided with an air channel having an enlarged closed-wall chamber tapering upward from its lower front end adjacent to said front wall and said air channel also having remote from said front Wall discharge openings of smaller area than said chamber, and an air inlet for said air channel comprising two short pipes disposed one within the other and having insulating material between them, the outer pipe being inserted in the boiler plate and the tube plate and being exposed to the hot steam between said plates and the inner pipe opening at its front end into said air channel and at its rear end into the atmosphere and beingeXposed Ybetweensaid kplates to the incoming cool air, said insulating material preventing uneven expansion and contraction of said outerpipe and thereby avoiding leakage strains at its joints with said plates.
3. In a locomotive boiler the combination of a boiler, a Yfire box, a ire bridge extending inward and upward from the front wall spectively, and short straight air inlet pipes inserted in the boiler plate and the tube plate and opening at their front ends into said enlarged chambers respectively and at their rear ends into the atmosphere underneaththe cylindrical shell of the boiler.
