Be it known that I, Amar-.nr M. lVoL'rZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltin'iore, State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Bolt-Operating Mechanism, of which the following is a speciication.
This invention a new and useful device for locking a door both at the top and the bott-om, and is an improvement'upon the bolt-operating mechanism described and claimed in Letters .Patent No. 1,136,498
granted April 20, 1915.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a bolt-operating mechanism of the character referred to. having a simple and efficient means for preventing retraction of the bolts when they are in locking position. A further object is to provide a key-operated lock having` a movable member positioned to be moved into and out of the path of movement of the handle which actuates the bolt-mechanism.
The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating a bolt-operating mechanism constructed in accordance with the invention, parts being broken away. Figure 2 is a rear view there-l of. Figure 3 is an enlarged view illustrating the locking member in its lever-engaging position. Figure 4 is a similar view showing the locking member retracted.
Referring to the drawing, 10 designates a metal. housing shaped to engage the stile of a door, and provided at one end with a sho-rt cylindrical shell 11, extending inwardly at approximate right angles to the plane of the outer face of the housing. The handle or lever l2 which operates the bolt-actuating mechanism, is pivotally supported at one end in the' housing 10, the free end thereof being provided with suitable means by which it may be held by the operator, such as the ring-like portion 13. rlhe pivot end of the handle 12 is provided with an approximately semi-circular segment 14. around which is passed a helical spring` 15, one end of said spring being engaged with an eve 16 on the handle, the other end being secured t-o the housing, as shown. By this arrangement the spring acts to normally hold or retain the handle in closed position within the housing. Pivotally mounted on the same pivot pin 17 which supports the handle 12, is a bolt-actuating lever 1S, extending inwardly with respect to the housing, and parallel with one side of the segment 14. Said lever is provided with a slot 19, in which works a pin 20, projecting from the contigious side of said segment. Pivotally mounted in the housing between the pivot 17 and the shell 11, vis a second bolt-actuatinglever 21, the said levers 18 and 21 having complemental interlocking portions 22, whereby movement o-f the lever 1S will impart a corresponding movement to the lever 21. The upper and lower bolts 23 and 24 are connected with the respective levers 1S and 21. Vith the exception of the shell 11, the construction thus far described is identical with that illustrated and described in the patent above referred to. and operates in precisely the same manner.
Mounted in the shell 11 is a lock 25, which may be of any desired construction, it being preferred, however, to employ a key-operated lock of the well-known type in which removal of the key is prevented until the parts are moved to locking position. Said lock is provided with a rotatable barrel 26, the rear end of which carries a crank pin 27, which engages the slotted portion 28. of a latch or locking member 29. Said latch projects through a slot in the shell 11, in a direction longitudinally of the housing 10, and is provided with an offset portion having a lip 30, positioned to engage a complemental latch-engaging portion 31, on the free end of the handle 12.
In practice, the bolt-operating mechanism is actuated by means of the handle 12` in a manner fully described in said Letters Patent No. 1,136,498, and which will not be repeated here'. Then it is desired to lock the mechanism, the barrel 26 of the lock 2.3 is rotated by means of its key, thereby impart-ing movement to rthe latch 29, through the medium of the crank pin 27, so as to bring the lip 3() into engagement with the part 31 of the handle 12. The key may then be withdrawn, and the handle 12 will be securely locked against movement, thereby holding` the bolts 23 and 24 against withdrawal from engagement with the door casing. When it is desired to unlock the mechanism, the barrel 26 is rotated in the reverse direction by means of the key, thereby wit 1- drawing the latch 29 from engagement with the handle l2, leaving the latter tree, so that the bolt-operating mechanism may be actuated in the usual manner whenever desired.
The advantages ot the invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which it appertains. It will be particularly noted that the bolts 23 and 2li engage the door casing immediately upon the closing ot the door, and that by employing a look of the type which prevents withdrawal ot' the key until after loc-king, it will be impossible to open the door Without rst inserti-ng the key and withdrawing the latch 29.
Having thus explained the nature of the invention, and described an operative manner ot constructing and using the same, although without attempting to set forth all of the forms in which it may be made, or all of the forms ot its use, what is claimed is l. The combination with a handle pivotally sup-ported at one end and bolt mechanism actuated thereby, oit' a rotatable actuator, and a rectilinearly movable latch connected to and operated by said actuator and positioned to engage the tree end of said handle.
2. The combination with a handle pivotally supported at one end and bolt mechanism actuated thereby, of a rotatable actuator, and a latch connected to and operated b-y said actuator, said latch having' a tree end so disposed that it may be moved into a position overlapping the free end oit said handle. 4
3. The combination with a handle pivotally supported at one end and a bolt mechanism actuated thereby, of a rotatable actuator, and a latch connected to and operated by said actuator, said latch being capable of an approximately rectilinear movement in a plane parallel with the longitudinal median line of said handle, whereby it may be moved into and out of engagement with said handle.
4. The combination with a handle pivotally supported at one end and bolt mechanism actuated thereby, a barrel contiguous to the tree end of the handle and in alignment therewith, a rotatable actuator mounted in said barrel, and a rectilinearly movable latch operated by said actuator and positioned to engage the tree end of said andle.
5. The combination with a handle pivotally supported at one end and bolt mechanism actuated thereby, of a barrel contiguous to the tree end of the handle and iu alignment therewith, an actuator rotatably mounted within said barrel, and a rectilinearly movable latch connected with the inner portion of said actuator and having an offset end position to engage the free end of said handle.
6. The combination with a handle pivotally supported at one end and bolt mechanism actuated thereby, of a -rotatable actuator disposed at right angles and contiguous to the free end of said handle, and a rectilinearly movable latch connected with One end of said actuator and positioned to engage the tree endv ot' the handle.
7. The combination with a handle pivotall'y supported at one end and bolt-mechanism actu-ated thereby, of a latch having a slot in one end, and a rotatable actuator positioned contiguous to the other end ot said handle provided with a crank pin loosely engaging said slot, whereby said latch may be moved into and out of engagement with said handle.
8. The combination with a housing provided with a cylindrical shell in one end, a handle pivotally mounted .at one end iu the other end of said housing, and bolt mechanism actuated by said handle, of an actuator extending through said shell, and a latch operated by said actuator and positioned to engage said handle.
9. The combination with a housing provided with a cylindrical shell in one end, a handle pivotally mounted vat one end in the other end of said housing, and bolt mechanism actuated by said handle, ot a rotatable actuator mounted in said shell, and a latch engaging one end of the actuator and having a tree end positioned to engage said handle.

The combination with a housing provided with a cylindrical shell in one ond, a handle pivotally mounted at one` end in the other end of said housing, and bolt mechanism actuated by said handle, ot a lock mounted in said shell and provided with a rotatable member, a crank pin oarried by said rotatable member, and a latch engaging said crank pin and positioned to engage said handle.

The combination with a housing provided with a cylindrical shell, a handle pivot-ally mounted in said housing, and boltmechanism actuated by said handle, oi" a lock mounted in said shell and provided with a rotatable member, a crank pin carried by the rear end ot said rotatable inember, and a latch having a movable engagement with said crank pin and provided with an offset locking lip overhanging said shell and positioned to engage said handle.
