Description

Patented Dec. 16, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERNEST G. JARVIS, OF PATERSON, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, I
TO MERCO NORDSTROM VALVE COMIANY, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, A
CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
ALLOY.
No Drawing.
To all whom it mayconcem:
Be it known that I, ERNEST G. JARVIS, a citizen of New Jersey, residing at Paterson, in the county'of Passaic and State of New Jersey; have invented certain new and use-. ful Improvements in Alloys, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improvement in alloys.
One object of the invention is to produce a new and im roved alloy characterized by its superior tness for use in valves and other parts subjected to the effects of superheated and saturated steam and high temperatures generally, and to the eifects of concentrated or'dilute hot and cold acids. A further object of the invention is to produce an alloy characterized by having a high melting point, ability to withstand severe shocks, great tensile strength and homogeneity of structure.
The alloy in its preferred composition consists of a mixture of the following metals in approximately the proportions specified,
namely:
Percent. Tin 1 Lead 2 Iron 2 Copper -1 6O Nickel 25 Zinc 10 Although I prefer to make the improved alloy from the various metals in the proportions given above for the best results, not- Application filed April 13, 1923. Serial No. 631,889.
withstand severe shocks, but also as to the adaptability of the alloy for casting, machining and the like operations, nevertheless I have found that an-alloy satisfactory for the purposes of the invention may be made from these various metals within the following limits 1- Per cent.
Tin 1 to 3 Lead 1 to 4 Iron 2 to 6 Copper 60 to 65 Nickel 22 to 28 Zinc 8 to 12 and severe and sudden shocks. Moreover, the alloy is easily machined.
I claim: I I
1. An alloy consisting of the following metals taken within the limits of approximately the proportions given: tin 1 to 3 per cent; lead Into 4 per cent; iron 2' to 6 per cent; copper 60 to 65 per cent; nickel 22 to 28 per cent; zinc 8 to 12 per cent.
2. An alloy consisting of a mixture of metals in approximately the following proportions: tin 1 per cent; lead 2 per cent: iron 2 per cent; copper 60 per cent; nickel 25 per cent; zinc 10 per cent.
