PIPE AND NUT WRENCH Filed oet. a, 192s Z55 ly/l INVENTOR.

,PERE AND NUT WRENCH.
Applicatienfled Qetober 8, 1,9553, Serial No. (167,215.
le it known that l, lViLLL-irr A. Der, a citizen of the United States, and .a resident of ,'Bellingham, in the county ot hatcom and State oit lilfashington, have invented a new and useful Improvement in ipe and Nut lVrenches, of which the Vfollowing*is a specification.
lsy invention relates to improvements in pipe and nut wrenches, and vone ot the objects ot my improvements is to provide a pipe and nut wrench having pawland ratchet setting means, another' object ot, my improvements is to provide a. pipe and nut wrench having positive release means adapted to allow the jaws to separate when it is desired to relieve the wrench from a jammed position on the work between its jaws, and a further object olf my improvements is to provide a pipe and nut wrench having quick action in setting on the work and of strong and durable construction and ot' simple design.
I attain these objects with the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying sheet ot' drawings, which 'forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a. plan view of my wrench and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. 1.
Similar characters relier to similar parts throughout. Certain parts are broken away to show other parts hidden thereby.
More particularly: The wrench handle 3 has shank 11 to which it is joined by curved part a3. Gn the end oit shank 4t is iXed jaw in the plane ot said handle and shank and, preferably at an angle therewith. Said j aw 5 has slanting teeth inclined toward its point. On the upper end of jaw 5 are two ears 6 having a hole therethrough, at right angles to the plane of said handle and shank, in which is pin 7. on which is mounted bar 8 for limited oscillation. Bar 8 has ratchet teeth on its side away from shank l slanting from pivot 7 The other' end of bar 8 is pivoted to loop 10 by rivet 9. Loop 10 is mounted on handle 8 and shank 4: for reciprocation and has pin d10 therethrough to confine its movements to reciprocation. lVhen loop 10 is in its fullline position it is normal to both shank 4L and bar 8 and retains said bar at its maximum distance 'from shank l and in its normal operative position. By moving loop 10 from its full-line to its dotted-line position at 10 in Fig. 2 it swings on pivot 9 and removes pin am from beneath said pivot when Pin 7 serves as a pivot bar 8 is tree to assume its dotted-line position at 8. Slideway 11 is mounted on loose jaw shank 13 and welded to bar 8 in proximity to ears lG on lixed jaw 5, and it has a curved seat a. into which said rounded ears bear. Loose jaw 12 has shank 13 at rightangles therewith, by preference. Said jaw has ratchet-torni teeth on its tace slanting from its tip. Shank 18 is mounted for reciprocation inslideway 11, and it has enlargement 14e to which is fastened slideway of in which is mounted bar 8 for reciprocation. This construction holds bar 8 beneath and parallel with shank 13 which ist'ree to slide thereon. Bore liis made in enlargement 14; from the bottom of shank 18 to near its 'top where the diameter of said bore is reduced to provide a hole in which the pawl tail 1G is mounted for reciproczition. Pawl head a is mounted in the larger part of said bore for reciprocation and has a plurality ot teeth 7am which engage with ratchet teeth as. et spiral spring 17 is mounted on tail 16 in bore 15 and reacts between. the pawl head als and shank 13, and it serves to retain teeth 7116 in engagement with the teeth of bar 8. rl`wo ears 18 extend upward from enlargement 14 and they have a hole therethrough in which is pin als. Said pin serves as a pivot for thumb lever 19. The rear end or' 19 is a tooth al and is engaged in a notch in pawl tail 16. lVhen 19 is depressed teeth b1 are withdrawn from engagement with ratchet as against pressure of spring 17 and shank 13 is free to move to withdraw jaw 12 from jaw But because of the inclined backs oi teeth as and D16 jaw 12 is easily caused to approach jaw 5 by pressure on said loose jaw toward said fixed jaw. With the described construction it readily appears that jaw 12 is held in its full-line position :taring jaw 5 when loop 10 is in its full-line position. But when loop 1() is turned to 10 jaw 12 also moves to 12 and the `former distance between said aws is increased.
In operation: J aw 12 is shoved away from jaw 5, while thumb lever 19 is depressed, to permit the work to enter about one half way up between said aws. Then jaw 12 is forced to bear on the work by shoving it toward j aw 5. The wrench is now properly engaged with the work and is used till the desired end is attained, or till the jaws become stuck on the work. This jamming of the work in the aws is easily relieved by swinging loop 10 to position 10 when the jaws spread and the wrench is free to be removed from the work or to be reset thereon for further operations.
Having thus disclosed my invention, ,What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,-
l. In a wrench in combination, a handle and a handle shank having a fixed jaw on the end thereof, slideways fastened to said handle lo shank, a loose jaw and a loose-jaw shank in kl? said loose-jaw shank, reciprocable thereon,
having ratchet teeth on its side next toV said loose-jaw shank, one end of' which is pivoted to said fixed jaw and the other end of which is pivoted to a loop, a loop pivoted to "l" said bar-and mounted on said handle shank whereby said jaws are retained in operable relation when said loop is normal to said bar but are allowed to separate a short distance when said loop is turned on said pivot to an oblique position relative toV said bar, and a spring-pressed pawl mounted in said loosejaw shank engageable with said ratchet teeth in said bar whereby said jaws are retained from separating` but allowed to approach each other. A
2. In a wrench in combination, a handle, a fixed jaw on one end of said handle, a 1novable jaw facing said fixed jaw in operable relation, a shank fixed to said movable in the plane of said handle, a bar between said shank and handle in the plane thereof and pivot'ed to said fixed jaw havingslidable engagement with said shank, controllable means adapted to retain said bar at a fixed point in oscillation, and means adapted to retain said shank at dilierent points from sliding further outward on saidbar whereby said jaws are either retained at variable distances apart or permitted toincrease their relative angularity as desired.
