IMPROVEMENT |N LAMP-EXTINGUISHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,92 1 dated June 9, 1874; application filed February 24, 1874.
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs SELLING, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of 'Michigan, have invented an Improvement in plate, with a cord secured to the outer end' thereof having a small metallic ball suspended thereto, the said ball being supported by a bracket slipped over the collar of the fount so long as the lamp isin an upright position; but when inclined or overturned the ball falls ofi its support, and, through the cord, pulls down the long arm of the lever, which brings the hood over the wick to extinguish the flame. This attachment is applicable to the various forms of burners now in market.
Figure -1 is a side elevation of the device as attached to an ordinary kerosene-lamp. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of the hood and lever, and the base-plate to which it is attached. In the drawing, A represents a lamp-fount, on which is secured a burner, B, of which 0 is the wick-tube and D the cone, secured to the base of the burner by supporting-clips rising from a base-ring, a, Fig. 1. E is a plate slotted to slip over the wick-tube and rest upon the ring a, to which it is secured by bending over it clips on the edges of said ring. At
each end of the plate there is turned up an ear, I), in which ears the arms 0 c, at the lower corners of a hood, F, are pivoted. This hood is a plate of sheet-brass curled over at the top and ends, and is of such radius that when thrown up against the wick-tube the hood will inclose the upper end of the wick and extinguish the flame. The hood is operated by a lever, Gr, pivoted at d to the other side of the plate. The inner and shorter arm of this lever is a yoke or frame, which passes around back of the hood, whose end edges are embraced between the extremity of the yoke and a stud, c, at each end, so that as the long arm is pressed down the hood will be swung up against the wick-tube otherwise the hood will fall back and away of its own gravity. A small spherical weight, H, is suspended from the long arm of the lever by a cord, f, which passes through one of the air-holes in the burnerbase, the weight being supported on a ringbracket, g, securedv about the fount-collar by a spring-clamp.
If the lamp be tilted out of its proper position this weight will fall 0d the bracket and pull down the lever to swing the hood over the wick, and thus extinguish the flame.
I do not claim, broadly, the use of a hood to extinguish the flame nor do I claim a lever and ball to actuate the said hood; but
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a lamp-burner havin g a flat wicktube, of the plate E having, the hood F and lever G pivoted thereto, as described, the cord f, weight H, and a supportin g-bracket, the several parts constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
