Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAF F. EDHOLM, OF LAKE CITY, MINNESOTA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAFETY-EXTINGUISHERS FOR LAMPS.
Sfeciiication firming part of Letters Patent No. 163,466, dated May 18, 1875; application led January 23, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAF F. EDHOLM, of Lake City, in the county of Wabasha and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Lamp-Extinguishers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptitm ofthe construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation cfa plan view of my device, and Fig. 2 is a estical sectional view ofthe same.
This invention has relation to means for automatically extinguishing the llame of a lamp should the latter be upset 5 and it consists in c nnecting the extinguishing-tube to the weight which raises it when the lamp is upset bymeans of a chain, which is allowed to play freely througlran eye on the upper end of a standard inside of the burner-cap, as will be understood from the following description:
In the annexed drawings, A designates the body of the burner, and B the burner-cone and chimneygallery, which parts may be constructed in the usual well-known manner. C designates the burner-tube, on which is loosely applied an extinguishing-tube, a., as described in my Letters Patent numbered 157,003. This tube a. is constructed with a (in, b, on one side of it, to which one end of a chain, o, is attached. Chain c is passed through a pulley-eye formed on the upper end of a standard, d, rising from and secured to the body of the burner. The chain c is carried down through a perforated diaphragm, e, and attached to a weight, f. This weightf has a concave bottom, which receives a convex elevation formed on a shelf, D, when the weight is resting on the latter. G designates a lever, one end of which is eX- posed outside ofthe body A of the burner, and the other end passes loosely through the lin b on the tube a.. This lever is used for raising the tube a and extinguishing the flame by hand.
When the weight f is supported upon the shelf D the tube e will rest upon the diaphragm c; but should the lamp upset or be unduly tilted, the weightf will slip from its shelf and cause the tube a to extinguish the ilame.
I am well aware that it is not new to raise a sliding-tube extinguisher by means of a lever; therefore I do not claim this.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- In a lamp-burner, the rigid standard d within the burner, having a loop at its upper en d, in combination with the slide-tube extinguisher a, its tin b, and the weight-chain o, passing through the floor ot' the burner and the standard-loop to the iin of the slide-tube, all arranged and operated substantially as specitied.
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses. I
GUSTAF F EDHOLM. Witnesses:
ADELBERT -WELLs, A. E. EDHOLM.
