To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT L. ELLERY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have made an Invention Apperand Lowering Means-iandl do hereby declare the following tdibea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to window raising devices for use particularly in connection with closed vehicles, and" has for its object the provision of a simple and inexpensive device of this character, which is capable of being easily and quickly installed and is rapid and easy in its manipulation. Further objects and advantages of the invention will-be apparent from the following detailed description thereof.
While the invention in its broader aspect is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,

Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is an outer side view of the device in lowered position and with a window glass in engagement therewith and fragmentarily shown. Fig. 6 is an elevation of the opposite side of the device with parts !broken away and "with the "window in partially raised position, and Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7-7 in Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a window casing which may comprise a door, and is provided with the window opening 2 in its upper portion that is closed by a glass or win ow 3. This glass when lowered enters a chamber 4 formed within the lower-portion of the casing below the use the same, reference being had leasing over which the Fig. 3 is an enlar ed side elewindow opening, as is well understood in the art.
The means embodying the invention for controlling the raising and lowering movements of the window 3 includes a plate 5 which is vertically disposed within the cas ing chamber 4 at the inner side thereof and is fixedly attached at its upper and lower ends to cross-members or bars, 6 forming a partof the window casing and which may comprise the customary lining strips of the usual upholstering is secured.
A lazy-tongs means 7 is carried by the plate 5 at the side thereof adjacent to the chamber 4 for vertical opening and closing movements, and is intended to support at its upper end the window 3 for movements therewith, as hereinafter described. The lower pair of pivotally connected crossed links 8 of the lazy tongs means are pivotally connected at their lower ends to the lower ends of respective suspending links 9, which in turn are mounted at their upper ends on pivot studs 10 fixedly projecting from the lower end portion of the plate 5 near opposite edges thereof.
The center connecting pivot pin 11 of thetwo lower links 8 of the lazy tongs meansis projected at-its inner end through a vertical slot 12 in'the lower end "portion of the plate 5 and is fixedly connected at the opposite side of the plate 5 to the lower end of an op erating stem 13, which extends up at the respective side of the plate and at its upper end enters a gear housing 14. One of the pair of spiral gears 15 is threaded on the stem 13 within the housing 14 and the other is fixedly mounted on a shaft 16, which is "ournaled in the housing 14 and has one end projecting from the housing and carrying an operating crank 17 at the side of the window casing from which it is desired to operate the window raising and lowering means. The gear 15, which is mounted on the stem 13, is held against axial movements by a pair of fingers 18, which project from a side of the housing 14 at opposite sides of the gear, as shown in Fig. 7 It is evident that a turning of the crank 17 will drive the gears 15 and communicate an axial movement in one directionor the other to the stem 13 due to the threading of one of the gears thereon, and themovement of the stem will impart a raisingor, lowering movement of the extensions angled with respect to the.

The upper ends of the upper pair of crossed pivotally connected links 19 of the lazy tongs means have their upper ends each rovided with an extension 20, which proects outward from the upper end of the link at an oblique angle thereto and may itself be straight, curved or angled as desired. A clamp bar 21, which is adapted to have clamping engagement at its upper edge with the lower edge of the window glass 3, is provided with alongitudinally extending slot 22 in the lower edge portion thereof adjacent to each end and each of these slots receives a pin 23, which projects laterally from the free end of each extension 20 whereby the clamping plate 21 and window 3 are carriedby the upper end portion of the lazy tongs means for raising and lowering movements therewith.v During the collapsing and expanding movements of the lazy tongs means the pins 23, work inward and outward in the slots 22 of the clamping plate. The purpose of providing the upper set of links 19 of the lazy tongs means with major portions of the links, as shown, is to adapt the clamping plate 21 connecting the upper end of the links 19 to be disposed a distance below the upper end of the lazy tongs means when ,in'closed position and preferably above the upper ends of the major or body portions'of the upper set of links 19 when in raised position. This evident that this causes a greater length of move ment of the window for each raising and lowering stroke of the lazy tongs means than would be possible if the clamping plate 21 were connected to the lazy tongs means in the usual manner so that when lowered or raised the plate would not be'disposed below or above the upperend of the lazy tongs means. The primary object, however, of the extensions 20 angled relative to their respective links 19, is to permit the window to have a maximum lowering movement in the casing chamber 4, irrespective of the height of extension of the lazy tongs means therein when in its collapsed or lowered position.
The purpose of mounting the lazy tongs means on the suspended swinging links 9 is both to impart an accelerated opening or closing movement of the means from a movement of the pin 11 and to impart a greater length or movement to the lazy tongs means from a :given movement-of the pin 11 than would be possible if the pivots atthe lower ends of the lower air of links 8 were mounted in crossslots m the plate 5, as iscustomarily done. For instance, a two inchjraismg movement of the pivot pin 11' from full lowered position will impart e-aseventeen 1nch raising movement to the window,
whereas such movement of the ivot pin would impart only a thirteen inc raising movement to the window if the lower pivot pins of the-links 8 were mounted in cross slots instead of in the swinging links 9. The provision of the extension arms 20 adds three inches to the above movement.
The weight of the window on the lazy tongs means is counteracted by two coiled contractile-springs 25 disposed at opposite sides of the stem 13 and anchored at their upper ends to respective ears 26 projecting from the plate 5. The lower ends of the springs are connected to respective ends'of an equalizing cross bar 27 which is centrally pivoted to the pivot pin 11.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction, arrangement orform of the parts, as it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms without departing from the spirit of the claims.

In combination with a stationary member having a vertical slot, a pair of depending links disposed on opposite sides of the slot and pivoted at their upper ends to said member, lazy-tongs having the lower ends of their lowermost links pivoted to the lower ends of the depending links and having the pivot pin of said lowermost links slidable in said slot, the upper ends of the uppermost links of the lazy-tongs having lateral .extensions projectin outwardly in opposite directions, a move le member having horizontal slots, pins carried by the outer ends of said lateral extensions and movably received in the respective horizontal slots of the movable member, a cross-bar centrally pivoted to said lower pivot 1Jpin of the lazy tongs, springs connected at eir upper ends to the stationary member and'at their lower ends to the cross bar, and means connected to said lower pivot pin of the lazy tongs-to operate the latter.
