D. F. DYKE RAIL FASTENER Fi1ed May 19, 1919 Patented Dec. 9, 1924.
UNlTED STATES PATENT QFFQE.
DARRELL F. DYKE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR T SENG CO/FANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINIS.
RAIL FASTENER.
Application filed May 19,
Be it known that I, DARRELL F. Dynia, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful lniproveinents in a Rail Fastener, of
".vhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for fastening the end of a rail to a supporting post, but is more particularly designed and intended as a bed rail fastener, although of course, it may have a more general use wherever applicable.
The. principal objectof the invention is to provide means for Operating a hook at the end of a rail for drawing it up tightly in ('(mnection with a supporting` post.
In the :zuifcon'ipanying drawing Fig. 1 is a side view of a device constrncted in aceordance with the principles of this nvention; Fig. 2 is a top or plan view the-reof; and Fig. 3 illnsti'ates a wedge acting modiication.
'Bed rail fastenings are common in which there .is a fixed hoolr projecting from the end of the rail and adapted to be hooked over a supporting pin in a slot or a bed post or support. rEhe present invention diifers from constructions of this kind by providing a loose hool: with an Operating member for drawing it tightly against a supporting pin.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, a rail 1 preferably of angle bar construction is provided with a plate 2 rigidly secured thereto by fastening means 3 and with the outer edge 11 of the plate 2 bent at right angles thereto and formed with a slot 5 eX- tending parallel with the plate portion which is attached to the rail.
Extending through the slot 5 is a member 6 having a hook 7 at its outer end and with projections 8 along the upper edge which are spaced apart substantially the thickness of the plate 11 through which the member extends7 and the projections are disposed one at each side of the plate so that the space between them forms a seat which bears against the upper end of the slot. A shoulder 9 is formed on the opposite side of the member 6 adjacent the inside edge of the hook 7 so that it substantially fits the slot. when the member 6 is in the position shown in Fig. 1. In order to insert or withdraw the member 6 from its engagement with the slot 5, the member 6 is drawn in- 1919. Serial NO. 293,270.
wardly so that the shoulder 9 is free from engagement 'with the lower end of the slot` wherenpon the projeetions 8 may be engaged or disengaged from the upper end of the slot and the member b moved accordingly.
An Operating member disposed between the inner end of the hook member 6 and the side of the plate 2 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises a cam 10 with a handle 11, the cam portion of which is attached to the inner end of the member 6 by means of a bol't or rivet 12. This rivet 12 also eXt-ends through a slot 13 in the plate 2 and the rivet is cominonly provided with a head 111 which is larger than the slot 13 so that when the parts are assei'nl'iled the Operating and hool: members cannot become disengaged from the plate 2. T he slot 13 is preferably curved about the upper edge of the slot 5 as a centerI` as the member 6 is oscillated about the projections 8 when the hook member is operated. VVith this construction it is obvious that when the handle 11 is in its lowermost position as shown in Fig. 1, the highest portion of the cam engages 'the plate 4 between the f-i slot 5 and the adjacent corner of the member 2 so that the hool: member .is drawn inwardly, and that when the handle member is raised, the lower portion of the cam will be brought into engagement, allowing the hook to be released.
Approximately the. same construction with the exception of the Operating member is shown in Fig. 3 in which a wedging member 15 having an angularly disposed slot. 16 is slidably mo'unted vopon the rivet 12 and by moving it downwardly the hoolt member 6 is drawn inwardly, and by moving it upwardly the hook member is released.
In both of the-se constructions the eccentricity of the cam and the inclination of the slot 16 is such that the Operating member will hold the hook member in any position in which the Operating` member is set so that it may be tightened and left in any position without danger of disengagement of the hook. Both of these eonstructions are commonly employed in connection with a post 17 having a pin 18 extending` transversely of a slot 19 therein so that the book 7 may be inserted and engaged over the pin. The movement of the Operating member draws the angular bearing` portion L1- of the plate 2 tightly against the slotted side of the post by the engagement of the hoolr with the pin.
I claim:
1. In a bed 'rail fastener, an angular end plate attachable to a bed rail and having a slot in one portion thereof spaced from the other angular portion, a member disposed in the slot having' a hook on the enter side of the plate, and means connecting' the hool: and the plate for Operating the book, said means oomprising a lever having a cam operating surface and being pivotally connected to the hook and loosely pivoted in the plate.
2. In a bed rail fastener, a slotted bearing plate, a hooked attaching member disposed and movable in the slot, and having means at-,one side of the member for engaging the plate at the end of the slot7 and means connected to the plate and member for moving the member about said end of the slot as an axis.
3. A bed rail fastener comprising a right angled plate one portion of which is attachable to a'bed rail and the other portion of which is formed with a slot parallel with the .first named portion, a member With a hook projecting through the slot and having means for engagement With the plate at the upper end of the slot to permit a. pivotinp; inovement of the member, and lever operated means between the member and the. 'first ment ioned portion of the plate engaging both the member and the plate for moving;` the memher pivotally in the slot.
4. The combination With an end member angular in form having a slot in one portion parallel With and spaced from. the other porton, a member having a hool: e-Xtending through such slot vvith means for engaqjing the first mentioned member at one end of the slot to permit an oscillating movement thereof, a fastening device entending,` through the inner end of the hool: member and through said other portion of the first mentioned member, the latter being formed with an e-nlarged perforation to permit the movement of the hook member.l and means for moving the hook member to cause its oscillation.
