SEAT GUARD FOR WATER-CLOSETS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD MELDAL, residing at London, England, a subject ofthe King of Great Britain and Ireland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seat Guards for Water-Closets, of which the following is a specification.

This invention comprises a seat guard for water closets involving the use of a casing containing a pack of guard sheets located behind the seat, each sheet having at one edge a tab whereby it can be drawn from the casing across the seat and made fast at the front edge. With this arrangement the sheet while in use is held securely in position at the front by the fastening referred to, and at the rear by its attachment to the pack or casing.

A convenient device for the attachment of the sheet at the rear is a clip of stout Wire having its ends bent at ri ht angles to form two limbs, which are hinged to the board orledge behindthe seat, with springs tending to hold'it down. For greater security I may attach to the board a strip of rubber or equivalent material, preferably corrugated, against which the clip presses the sheet, or I may attach such material to the clip itself.

Avconvenient device for attachin the tab in front of the seat'is a strip of ru ber under which the tab can be pushed. For such strip of rubber I may use a V-shaped wire holder fixed under the seat near the front edge, and having its ends bent up'so that they lie in front of the edge, with the rubber strip stretched between them.

When using a casing mounted behind the seat, and relying, for attachment of the sheet at the rear, on its connection to the pack or the casing,-it may be desirable to strengthen the rear edge of the sheet,.0r I may use a pack of sheets held together by means ofa glued binding like the sheets of a writing pad. Y

The tab at the front edge of the sheet may be utilized as a conveient means for ensuring that only a single'sheet is withdrawn from the case. For this .urpose the tab on each sheet in the pack is either folded back against the front surface of the sheet,

' and is consequently separated from all the other tabs or thelatter is so folded as to separate the tabsso that only one tab can be taken hold of, and only one sheet will be withdrawn. r

these walls slope outwards, from top to bottom, so that the flap is somewhat inclined when closed. It then closes the case better than when hanging down vertically.

For securing the pack in the casing I may use thin wire loops or rings at the top corners of the pack, hung upon hooks at the top of said casin When using folded sheets, with the fo 6. at the top, each of the rings referred to passes through a double thickness of the sheet and in that case I may fold the sheet so that at the bottom the rear edge overlaps the front edge, and the rear edges of all the sheets are also furnished with wire rings, which engage hooks or pins at or near the bottom of the casing.

Embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one form showing a guard over the seat and the front cover of the casing partly raised. Fig. 2 is a cross section through the casing and sheets with the cover of the former completely raised. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the casing with the front removed and the walls in section. The form shown in the drawings comprises a box or casing a provided'at the top with a hinged lid a opening outwards or backwards, to permit ready insertion of the stack of sheets and avoid contact with the usual flush pi e and furnished at the front with a hinge flap or cover a extending for about half the height and hinged to be opened upwards as by means of the knob a. Such .a casing with the pack of sheets 6 contained therein is adapted to be placed immediatel at the rear ofythe seat 0 as shown in ig. 1. The sheets are preferably of the form and folded as more particularly shown in Fig. 13, that is to say each is folded along a line 6* into two parts b b the front part b bein provided at its lower or forward edge wit a projecting tab 6 and with a flap tab 6* extendin inwards from its aperture 5 to' protect t e person from contact with the edge of the seat aperture...

The rear part 6 extends lower. than the general edge of the front part for a distance approximating to the lengthof the tab 6 and is provided near its lower edge with apertures b, whilst at the top adjacent the fold both parts are provided with other apertures b", said apertures being for the passage of fastehing means now to be described.

At the top, said fastening means comprise open ended rings or loops (1 as of thin wire, passed through the apertures b and suspended from hooks d attached to the inside of the casing and extending substantially across the width thereof. Atthe base other similar rings or loops (1 are passed through the aperture b and are held in position by spring clips al -of which two orms are shown in Figs. 8 and 9 comprising bent wires or spring metal plates d attached to the floor of the casing and bent over more or less at the ends as at d, Figs. 8 and 9, or bent outwardly as atd Fi 3, and of such length and width as to a low free play for the rings or loops d therein except in a forward direction.

The pack of sheets thus mounted in the casing a is ready for use and the method of folding described renders the tab 1; of a single sheet only readily accessible when the flap or cover a. is raised as shown in Fig. 1 and permits the uard sheet to be quickly and accurately seat as also indicated in said figure the rear of such sheet being held by the loops (1 and spring clips d and restrained from complete unintentional removal by said loops and by the hinged flap a when the latter is lowered.

It now only remains to secure the sheet at the front when desired and this is performed by means of a clipping device either of the form shown in Figs. 4 and 5 or in Figs. 6 and 7. The former comprises a plate 6 of spring metal attached as by screws to the undersideof the front of the seat and e to which is attached a strip 6 of corrugated rubber or some other resilient material, the forwardly extending endof the spring plate e being provided with a knob rawn across the or finger piece 6 In use the tab 12 is passed around the front edge of the seat and gripped by the strip of rubber c after de pressing and releasing the spring plate e by means of the knob e The form of clip shown in Figs. 6 and 7 is somewhat different and comprises a, V- shaped piece of wire f looped at its apex to provide an aperture for passage of a fastening screw or stud 7. Connecting its bent up free ends is a double band f of rubber or other. resilient material to which is attached a tab f preferably of or covered with corrugated rubber. In this 'case also the tab If on the guard sheet is passed around the front edge of the seat after pulling out the band f by its tab f(and on release will be securely clipped to the seat.

It will be apparent that the construction suspending said sheets in said casing coInprising hooks secured to said casing and loops traversing the tops of the sheets and engaging said hooks, said casing being formed with an opening through which the detached sheets are Withdrawn and a normally closed cover for said opening engaging said sheet to prevent the complete withdrawal of the same.

A seat guard container for water closets comprising a normally closed casing adapted .to receive a pack of guard. sheets therein, means at the top of said casing for detachably' suspending said sheets, additional sheet securing means passing through said sheets arranged at the bottom of said casing, said casing being formed. with an opening through which the sheets are withdrawn and a normally closed hinged cover for said opening extending below said additional sheet securing means and adapted to frictiona-lly engage the sheet and co-operating with the additional sheet retaining means to prevent the complete withdrawl of the sheet'from the casing.
