Description

A. R. LAWSON PACKAGE FOR DISPENSING PAPER SHEETS Filed June 22, 1956 INVENTOR. Albert. l Lawon ATT( RNEY.
`luly 4, 1939.
Patented July 4, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE'.
PACKAGE FOR DISPENSING PAPER SHEETS Application June 22, 1936, Serial No. 86,549
4 Claims.
This invention relates to an improved package for dispensing sheets of paper, such as sheets of waxed paper, individually and as they are desired for use.
The package is so constructed and the sheets to be dispensed are so arranged therein that a large number of superimposed sheets of paper are supported within the package in such a manner that individual sheets may be readily withdrawn for use and the remaining sheets are protected against exposure, soiling, or disturbance during withdrawal of sheets for use.
An object is to provide such a package wherein the container or enclosure is simple, inexpensive, and convenient. The package is so formed that the container may be hung upon a wall in a position convenient for use for removal of individual sheets therefrom.
A meritorious characteristic is that the con- 20 tainer is fashioned in the form of an envelope having an opening adjacent to the top for withdrawal of the sheets therefrom and the sheets are so supported in folded form therein as to be grasped along their folded portions for Withdrawal.
The container is self-closing following withdrawal of a sheet therefrom. Sheets which have been withdrawn but not used may be readily replaced within the container for later withdrawal. The sheets to be dispensed are so supported within the package that they may be withdrawn without tearing or mutilation. The container occupies a minimum amount of space and is of maximum simplicity. The container effectively protects the sheets which it carries against exposure. The package is easily fabricated and lends itself to display advertising.
Other objects, advantages, and meritorious features will more fully appear from the following description, appended claims, and accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved package partly broken away,
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on 2-2 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is an elevation of a modified form of support for the sheets to be dispensed,
Fig. 4 embodies my invention in a modified form of construction, and
Fig. 5 illustrates my invention in a second modified form of construction.
In the dispensing of sheets of waxed paper it is common practice to provide a boxlike container within which the sheets may be disposed or to provide a container within which a roll of waxed (Cl. 20G-57) paper is carried for withdrawal of paper from the roll and severance of a sheet therefrom. Waxed paper sheets are also packaged within a container adapted to be hung upon a wall for withdrawal of individual sheets such as illustrated in the patent to Silbar, No. 1,662,080. In this type of construction it is common practice to stitch the sheets within the container and to withdraw individual sheets tearing them from the stitching which supports them.
My improved package comprises a container in the form of a pocket or envelope which has a front wall Ill and a rear wall l2. These walls are connected together as illustrated to form what might be termed a pocket like enclosure open adjacent to the top for withdrawal of sheets from the pocket. This top opening is normally covered by a flap lli here shown in the form of an end flap. The front and back wall might be made of a single sheet or two sheets pasted together as at I5 as shown in Fig. 2. In this gure the flap is shown as an extension of the rear wall l2. An eyelet I6 extends through the iap and rear wall and holds them together at the top and provides means whereby the package may be hung up on a wall hook or the like.
Within the interior of the envelope there is provided sheet supporting means. In Fig. 2 this is shown in the form of an insert or blank i8 which extends transversely across the top cf the envelope within its interior and is held in place between the ap and the rear wall by the eyelet I6. This blank is cut away as at 2l) and the cut out portion may be folded downwardly as at 22 to provide a rounded supporting edge upon which the sheets for withdrawal are suspended.
A large number of superimposed sheets 24 are folded upon themselves over this rounded edge portion 25 and so supported within the envelope that the folded edge portions of the sheets are opposite the opening provided in the envelope for withdrawal. The front wall il! will be cut away as at 26 to facilitate grasping of individual sheets for withdrawal from the envelope and as shown in the figures of the drawing. It will appear that the sheet supporting edge portion of the sheet carrier is disposed slightly above the bottom of the pocket opening in the envelope through which sheets are withdrawn. This facilitates the grasping of the folded portions of the sheets for withdrawal.
In Fig. 3 there is illustrated a hanger or sheet carrier 28 formed of wire shaped as shown to be inserted within the envelope. This wire is bent to provide a small loop 30 which may encircle the rivet I6 for suspension of the hanger within the envelope. In Fig. 4 the sheets 24 are shown as folded over a relatively rigid card 32 which card seats within the envelope and supports the sheets 24 upon its upper edge.
In Fig. 5 the sheet supporting member is in the form of a strip 34 extending transversely across the interior of the envelope and supported therein by stitches 36 through its ends. The sheets 24 are folded thereover. In this figure the flap 38 may be formed of the paper sheet which has been strengthened by chemical treatment or is so fashioned that it normally tends to yieldingly engagethe front wall of the enclosure so as to closely cover the pocket opening through which sheets are withdrawn therefrom. This flap is shown as secured by a band of adhesive 40 to the envelope proper. It might be secured thereto in any suitable fashion. The front and back walls of the envelope may be secured together as by the ap shown in Fig. 1 being adhesively secured in place or it may be formed in any fashion Well known in the manufacture of envelopes. The wall structure may be of strong,`tough, relatively thin ilexible paper or formed of a paper sheet of any desired strength, resiliency, and thickness. The sheets may be single sheets folded once transversely for suspension over the sheet supporting element or the sheets may ilrst be folded along a longitudinal median line and then folded transversely over the sheet supporting means. In the latter instance the entire package would have a less width than if the sheets were folded merely once along a transverse line.
CII
Various modifications of the invention may be carried out all Within the scope of the claims. The device lends itself to simplicity of manufacture and is simple and inexpensive. It is adaptable to permit ready withdrawal of the sheets and support them at all times protected against exposure.
