J. W. SILVER INFORMATION DIRECTORY Filed March 21, 1925 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 INVENTOR 555 M/. 671. 1/51? ATTORNEY Dec. 1924- J. w. SILVER INFORMATION DIRECTORY Filed March 21, 1923 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 WWW V 2a mg L Patented Dec. 9, 1924.
UNITED STATES JESSE W. SILVER, OF TACOMA, WASHINGTON.
INFORMATION DIRECTORY.
Application filed March 21, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jnssn W. SILVER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Tacoma, county of Pierce, State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Information Directories, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to Information directories, and more particularly to de vices of that character that are especially adapted for use on street lamp posts, or the like, for the convenience of strangers, visitors or for anyone else seeking information pertaining to a city.
It is the principal object of the invention to provide a device of the above character embodying an attractive and durable housing wherein a plurality of information hearing leaves are contained, and to which access may be readily had upon opening the housing.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of means whereby the information bearing leaves and the housing will be automatically closed as soon as released by a user so that the directory cannot remain in open position when it is not being used.
A still further object resides in the de' tails of construction of the'leaf supporting hinges, which makes possible the use of a large number of leaves without making it diflicult to have easy access to each one individually. 1
Other objects reside in the various de tails of construction of the housing for inclosing the information leaves which permits a front wall and a side wall to be opened outwardly so that easy access may be had to any of the information bearing leaves. c
In accomplishing these and other objects, I have provided the improved details of construction, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein V Figure 1 is a front elevation ofa directory embodying the present invention, showing it in open position.
Figure 2 is a horizontal section of the same, in open position.
Figure 3 is a side view of the device particularly showing the springs for closing the door.
Serial No. 626,528.
Figure 4 is an enlarged horizontal sew tion of the device when closed.
Figure 5 is a detail view of a part of the device, showing the assembly of the hinge plates and leaves thereon.
Figure 6 is an edge view of one of the information leaves.
Referring more in detail to the drawings-- 1 designates, as a whole, an information directory constructed in accordance with the present invention. The main part prefer ably would be constructed of cast or pressed metal plates, and comprises a back wall 2. opposite side walls 3 and 4 and a front part 5 which constitutes the door of the housing. The back wall 2 is provided with rearwardly projecting transverse portions 6 and 7, respectively, near its upper and lower ends, forming seats for fitting against a supporting post or the like, and holes anprovided through the ends of the seats for receiving therethrough the ends of U-bolts 8 whereby the housing may be secured to a support. Nuts, as at 9, would be applied to the ends of the U-bolts on the inner side of the housing to tighten the bolts about the support.
In the present construction, the side wall 3 is cast integral with the back wall 9, and upper and lower end walls of the housing. but the part forming the side wall 4 is made independent and is hingedly attached so that it may be swung outwardly from closed position so as to assume the position as shown in Figure 2. It is connected to the back wall by means of a hinge pin 10 that extends through registering openings in supporting ears 12 and 13 that are formed respelcltively at the edges of the back and side wa The front forming portion 5 of the housing is likewise hingedly attached to the forward edge of side wall 4 by means of a hinge pin 15 that extends through ears 16 and 17 formed respectively on the adjacent edges of these parts: the construction is such that when the parts are in closed position, the housing will be absolutely tight and will prevent the information bearing leaves therein from being soiled by weather.
Formed on the inner face of the side wall 4, near its upper and lower edges are transverse ribs 19 and 20 and extending between these is a hinge pin 21 Whereon a plurality of hinge plates 22 are swingingly mounted.
length of the housing hut are relatively narrow and each, at its outer or swinging edge, has a hinge pin 23 mounted therein whereon a plurality of leaves are hingedly supported. In the device herein illustrated, I have shown five plates 22 mounted on the hinge pin 21 and each of these supports live leaves 24- Whereon information may be placed, llhe partsare made of such sin: that they may be easily swung into .at fromthe housing and can be used without any difiiculty.
An important detail in the PlQSQIl 111W"?!- tion, residesin the cons r'ucti n of the hi plates, the leaves and the method of sembly which permits compactness of arrangeine'nt. i
In the preferred construction each of the -hinge,plates 22 is provided with three receiving so clets;28 for the hinge pin 21 and these are so arranged. that the socketsof successiveplates will be supported upon each other. Likewise the leaves 24 are each provided withthree. sockets 29 for the hinge pin 23 andthese are arranged in stepped rela tion and are located on the pinsone above the other.
In order that the housing will not remain open .when it is not in use, .1 have provided springs 32 and 33 which are located about the hinge pinslO and 15', respectively- The spring 32 has opposite end portions extended tobear against a supporting. ear of the side wall and against theback yiall'in such Inannerthat the tension of the spring will act to yieldingly urge the wall toward'clos ing position. Likewise the spring 33 has opposite end portions hooked about a supporting ear .of the side wall'and jbearing again-st the front soas to yieldingly urge the latter toward closed position. With' this arrangement, after the device-has been: in
use and isreleased, the springs will act to fold the parts togetherand into closed relation. as'showninFigure 3.,
Ordinarily information would be printed on the leaves, or postedthereon, but if itlis desired, clips 36, as shown in Figures 5 and formation bearing'fcards; could-be removably held;
It isre'adily apparent that devices of this character may; be madein various sizes and in different proportions than herein illus Y trated and could bemade for outsideor in-r side nse. ....It is also apparent thatthe housings of the directories could be made very ornamental so as to enhance their appearance.
Having thus described my invention; what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a device of the class described, comprising ahousing adapted to be secured to prising a housing adapted'to'be secured to a supporting post, or the like, and havingfa' hingedly mounted side wall and an out? wardly swinging door a hinge pin mounted along the inner face of said side wall, a plurality. of'plates hingedlymountedon said pin, leaf supporting" hinge pins carried be tween swinging'edges of each of said plates" parallel with the first named hinge, pin and a plurality of leaves hingedly moulitedflorr each of the said leaf supporting hinge pins.
A device of the classdescribed, .comprising a housing, a plurality of plates hingedly mountedon a Wall-of the housing about the same axial line and arplurality of leaves hingedly mounted on the swinging edges of. the said plates and wherein, the leaves supported by each. plate are adapted to lie flatly together andthe several fsetsjof leaves are adapted to lie 'flatlyktogether" "within the housing.
4. A directory of. the character described comprising an enclosing. housing'having a side wall thereof swingingly supported, by
hinge pin connection, from the back walhff and having a front 'wallswingingly sup- .ported by a hinge pin connection fr0m.the forward edge of the side wall; said'side walland front being adapted to swing'out- ,wardly 'to' open position, springs mounted.
about the hinge pins for yieldingly'urging the .partsto closed position, a hinge pin mounted along the inner face ofjthe said swinging sldenwall, a plurality of plates {1- 6 couldrbesecured to the leaveswhereby in-" hingedly mountedon said pinfhinge pins;
supported in.- the swinging edges of said plates and a plurality of inforination bear ing leaves, hingedly mounted on'thesepinsj to swlng lnto and from the housing.
Signed at Tacoma, Washington, this day of.March,.l923.. I v p} I ILVER.
