To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN E. Harris, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, havemade and invented certain new and useful Tmprovements in Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to buttons and particularly to that type which are fastened to cloth or other material by a tack or staple.
The object of my invention is to provide a button wherein the front or top is composed of relatively soft metal so that it may partake of any desired shape or form or decoration, and to join therewith a sheet metal back so that the button will be light in weight and economical to construct.
A further object is to provide a button composed of a front portion made of metal which is headed to the desired shape or form and to join therewith a back formed from sheet stock so as to incorporate into the button a high degree of strength and lightness.
A further object is to provide a button wherein the front is made of comparatively soft but inexpensive metal and the back made of strong, light and comparatively inexpensive metal and to join the two in such a way that a practically integral button is provided which will embody all of the desirable features of a button made from a single piece of aluminum or similar alloy and at the same time will be much more economical to construct than the same.
Other objects and advantages will appear as the description proceeds, it being understood that changes may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit thereof.
The preferred embodiment of my invention is disclosed in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of the top or head of the button, while Figure 2 is a plan view of the back of the button;
Figure 3 is a view in vertical section of the head and back prior to their assembly or joining together;
Figure 4 is a similar View showing the various parts of the button assembled and joined together and secured by means of a fastener to the cloth or other material;
Figure 5 is a bottom plan view of the assembled and finished button, and
Figure 6 is a similar view wherein the head or top portion of the button is of an irregular shape or contour.
Referringspecifically to the several views, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout, the front of the button is either cut from a rod or stamped from a sheet of comparatively soft metal such as aluminum or similar material, and by means of suitable dies (not shown) is stamped to contain a rearwardly extending flange 10 and a centrally located recess 11. This recess 11 is characterized by a further counter bore or recess 12 located. at the exact center of the head A. The side walls of the recess 11 are straight and adapted to receive the upstanding flange 13 of the back D therein.
The back D is stamped from sheet metal and is relatively strong but of thin cross section and comprises the usual hub 14:, the base 15 of which is provided with. the centralized aperture 16. The hub 11 is outwardly flared at its upper extremity to form the ledge 17 upwardly from which extends the flange 13. Contained within the hollow hub 14 is the anchor member 17, which, as illustrated in Figure 4C, is provided with a chamber 18 therein and with an opening 19 leading thereto, the opening 19 corresponding and registering with the aper ture 16 of the base of the hub, the anchor as thus constructed being of the usual type.
The back with the anchor therein is then assembled upon the head A, the flange 13 extending within the recess 11, and the back and the head are then subjected to the action of suitable squeezing dies and the flange 10 is turned down upon the flange 13 of the back and the two are compressed and joined together so as to become practically one piece, as illustrated in Figure 4. The top of the anchor 17 is dome-shape and fits snugly within the centralized recess 12 of the head.
The head A being formed of soft metal such as aluminum or non-ferrous alloy, may be stamped or headed to any desired configuration or shape, it being illustrated in Figures 1 and 5 of the drawing as being round and in Figure 6 as having an irregular contour. The head, being formed of comparatively soft metal, may also be suitably embossed or bear any desired inscription. In some instances it may be desired to place an ornamental cap upon the head and I have illustrated this form in Figure 7, wherein the head a. is provided with an ornamental cap C extending over the top of the same. The cap C is ordinarily formed of brass and accordingly may be plated or lacquered as desired.
My improved button as thus formed is more economical to construct than a button formed entirely of soft metal and at the same time it embraces practically all of the advantages and desirable featu es of the same. The back being formed of sheet metah such as tin plate, and suitably lacquered or coated, forms a very desirable and at the same time very economical back.
Having thus described and explained my invention, 1 claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A button comprising a back formed as a shell and including an upwardly 8X tending flange and a front member provided with a recess therein receiving; the flange of the back the adjacent portions of the front being turned inwardly against the flange of the back and securing it thereto and an anchor located Within the shell and extending Within the front member and compressed between the front member and the back member.
2. A button comprising a back stamped from sheet metal and including a hub and an upwardly extending flange, and a front member formed of comparatively soft metal and headed to shape and provided with a recess therein, the fiangeof the back extending into said recess and anchored therein and meanslocated within the hub extending within the front member to form a rigid anchor for a staple.
A button comprising a back including i a hub, an outstanding ledge and an upwardly extending flange, a front member formed of comparatively soft metal assembled upon the said back, with the flange of the latter extending into a recess formed in said front member, and an anchor located within said hub and contacting With the rear portion of said front member to thus form a rigid structure for the reception of a staple.
