To all tv/wm t mii/. Q/ Concern.'
Be it known that I, l/VILLIAM H. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Juliette, in the county of Monroe and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Anchor Plate, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention aims to provide novel means for holding together the ends of a pair of railroad rails.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
Although a preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown, a mechanic may make alterations, within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
1n the drawing z--Figure 1 is a side elevation wherein parts are broken away and sectioned; and Figures 2 and 3 are sections taken, respectively, on the lines 2-2 and 3-3 of Figure 1.
The numeral 1 marks a base plate adapted to be mounted on a. tie 2 and provided with an overhanging rib 8 having recesses 4 and provided with transverse openings 5, the plate having an overhanging rib 6, of less height than the rib 3, the rib carrying an upstanding flange 7 provided with notches or openings 8 in its upper edge. The device includes an inverted U-shaped anchorl 9 comV prising a body 10 having a depending inner lip 11 and a depending Outer lip 12, the lip 12 being longer than the lip 11, there being alined transverse 'openings 14 in the lips 12 and 11, and the body 10 of the anchor being provided in its lower surface with a notch or opening 15, cooperating with the notch or opening 8 of the ange 7 and alined with the openings 14.
The ends of a pair of rails are shown, the
Serial No. 717,815.
flanges 16 of the rails being engaged beneath the ribs 3 and 6, the web 17 of the rail being engaged at one side by the vertical surface of the rib 3, the rib 3 engaging beneath the ball 18 of the rail. The anchor 9 is slid endwise into place, the flange 7 of the base plate 1 being received between the lips 10 and 11 of the anchor 9, the inner edge of the body 10 of the anchor engaging beneath the ball 18 of the rail, and the inner vertical surface of the lip 11 engaging the web 17 of the rail. Securing devices 19, such as bolts, pass through the openings 5 of the rib 3. through the web 17 of the rail, through the openings 14 of the lips 11 and 12 of the anchor 9 and through the cooperating seats or notches 8 and 15 of the parts 7 and 10, respectively, the ends of the rails being held securely in place, a strong and efficient means for connecting the ends of the rails being provided.
I claim 1. 1n a device of the class described, a base plate provided with overhanging ribs, one rib having an upstanding flange, an anchor comprising a body and depending lips, the flange being received between the lips, and a securing device mounted in the other rib and engaged with both lips and with the flange.
2. .A device of the class described, constructed as set forth in claim 1, and further characterized by the fact that the upper edge of the flange and the lower surface of the body are provided with cooperating notches receiving the securing device.
In testimony that l claim the foregoing as my own, 1 have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
