Specification of Letters Iatent.
Patented Oct. 12 1920.
Application-filed July 17, 1920. Serial No. 397,064.
To all 20 7mm it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH P. LAVOIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Epping, in the county of Rockingham and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail- Joints, of whichthe following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in rail joints.
An important object of the invention is to provide a rail jointwhich is strong, durable, and will present a continuous surface for engagement by the wheels.
A further object of the invention is to provide a rail joint of the above mentioned character, the parts of which are securely locked together, against accidental displace ment.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 designates railway rails of the usual construction, embodying a vertical web 11, a head 12, and base flange 13. The webs 11, at the meeting ends of the rails, are cut away, as shown at 14, for a purpose to be described. a
The rail joint embodies a horizontal base plate 15, adapted to extend beneath the base flanges 10, at the ends of the rails, and this base plate is provided near the end thereof disposed outwardly of the rails with an upstanding or vertical plate 16, preferably formed integral therewith. At its inner end, the base plate 15 has an upstanding or vertical flange 17. At its outer end, the base plate 15 has openings or notches 18 for the reception of spikes, to secure the same to the cross tie or the l1ke, and near its inner end it 1s provlded wlth openlngs 19.
The numeral 20 designates a locking mem her as a whole, embodying a vertical web 21,
adapted to be arranged upon the inner side of the rails, in engagement with the vertical webs '11, and serving ineffect as a fish plate. The vertical web 21 carries an inclined base 22, at its lower end, to engage the top of the base flanges 13, and also equipped with an extension 23, to contact with the stop flange 17. The vertical web 21 carries a head 24:, projecting laterally therefrom, and adapted to enter the space between the heads 12, caused by the openings 14:. This head embodies a depending lip 25, having alower inclined or beveled edge 26. The lip engages upon the opposite side of the webs 11.
Arranged inwardly of the vertical plate 16 is a filler element 27, preferably formed of wood, and trapezoidal in cross section, and tapering inwardly. This filler element has its inner end covered by a metallic cap 28, also tapered or trapezoidal in cross section, forming an inclined rest 29, to contact with the inclined face 26.
The numeral 30 designates bolts, passing outwardly through openings 31 in the web 21, webs 11, cap 28, filler element 27 and plate 16, such bolts carrying nuts 32 upon their outer ends.
hen the parts of the joint are assembled, and the nuts 32 screwed up tightly upon the bolts 30, it is obvious that such parts are securely locked against displacement.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention, or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a rail joint of the character described, the combination with a pair of rails having an opening between their heads at the meeting ends of the rails, of a base plate extending beneath the base of the rails at such meeting ends, an upstanding plate secured to the base plate and arranged upon one side of the rails, a locking member embodying a web arranged upon the opposite side of the rails and having a head arranged and having an inclined lower face, a tapered filler elementarranged between the upstanding plate and rails, a cap carried by the ta- V pered giiller element and embodying an upperinclined portion to engage with theinclined lower face, and bolts passing through the web, rails, upstanding plate, filler element,

In a l'ftll joint of the character described, the combination with a pair of rails having an opening between their heads at the meeting ends of the rails, of abase plate extending beneath'the base or" the rails at V such meeting ends,an'upstanding plate secured to one end portion of the base plate and arranged upon one side of the rails, a
web arranged upon the opposite side of the rails and having a base carried by its lower end, a stop flange formed upon the base plate and engaging said base, a head carried by the upper end of the web and arranged between the heads of the rails, a depending lip carried by the head and arranged upon the opposite side of the rails and having a lower inclined face, a wood filler arranged between the upstandingplate andrails and tapering inwardly, a tapered metallic cap carried bythe wood filler, and boltspassing through the web, rails, upstanding plate, wood filler, and cap.
