Application filed December 10, 1924. Serial No. 755,065.
- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP J. LEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residat Middle Point, in the county of Van Wert vide a device of the above mentioned character which will be of such nature as to preserve the life of the post.
A further object of my invention is t e provision of a device of this character which will be inexpensive to manufacture, simple in construction, strong and durable.
Other objects and advantages of my in-- vention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification and Wherein like numerals denote like or corresponding parts throughout the same;
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a device embodying my invention,
Figure 2 is a detail perspective thereof,
Figure 3 is a top plan view thereof, and
Figure 4 is a transverse section taken at right angles to Figure 1, and showing a slight modification.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 designates a crown block having downwardly and outwardly sloping walls 11. An opening 12 is arranged substantially centrally of the top of the block and is provided with an inwardly and upwardly sloping front face 13. The post 14 is preferably provided with the shoulder 15 adapted to rest on the top of the block 10 and below which is arranged the downwardly and outwardly sloping face 16, although this shoulder may be dispensed with if desired, as it is not necessary to the successful operationof my device.
The post 14 is adapted to be inserted into the opening 12 in the crown block and wedged therein by means of the wedge member 17 adapted to be arranged behind the post. When in this position the slanting face 16 of the post will firmly engage the sloping wall 13 of the opening 12 and the post will be positively anchored and locked within the opening.
The bottom of the post is adapted to rest upon the two sills 18 arranged at each side of the opening, in order that it will be spaced from the bottom of the opening, the lower portion of which is enlarged as at 19.
A preserving compound such as creosote or pitch 20 or the like, is poured into the opening by means of the channel 20. This creosote will fill the opening around the post and will serve to preserve said post. The supply may be replenished at will.
If preferred the lower end of the post may be provided with a tenon 23 to fit between the sills 18 and anchor the post, as shown in Figure 4,.
When installingrmy improved device, a hole is made in the ground and concrete to form a base 21 is placed in the hole and the crown block is set on top of the concrete base before it hardens. Some of the concrete will be squeezed up into the. flared opening 22, and around the block and will and prevent displacement of the same.
If preferred, the block if made sufficiently large may be packed in the opening in the Iground, Without the addition of the concrete ase.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes in the shape, material, size and arrangement of parts, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having described my invention what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is: a
1. In a device of the character described, a base having an opening, said opening having a slanting wall, sills arranged in said opening, a post adapted to be received in said opening and rest on said sills, said post having a sloping face, means to press the sloping face of the post into interlocking engagement with the sloping wall of the opening in the block, and a tenon arranged on the bottom of said post and adapted to fit between the sills.

2. In a device of the character described,
a crown block for post bases having an opening therein provided with a slanting wall, a post adapted to be snugly received in said 5 opening, and havin a slanting face adapted to engage the slanting wall of the o ning, said opening having an enlarged portion adjacent its lower end, and being provided with a channel communicating therewith whereby a preservative may be poured into 10 said enlarged portion of the opening.
