UNITED STATES PATENT DEEIOE.
PAUL T., VELLS, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN ANCHORS.
Specification forming partof Letters Patent No. l 51,8] 5, dated June 9,v 1874; application tiled May 13, 1874.
To all whom it may concer-n: p
Be it `known that I, PAUL T. I/VELLS, of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented an Improvement in Anchors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and correct description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved anchorinthe position it would have when holding a vessel.
My invention consists in attaching the stock to the shank by an oscillatingv loop, so arranged that the stock, when the anchor is hanging by the cable, will swing below the arms and at right angles to them, the object being that, when the anchor is dropped, the stock shall be the first part to come in con;
tact with the ground, and, in all positions inv which it may strike, shall give such direction to the arms as to insure the obtaining of an immediate and advantageous hold, all as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, Amai-ks the shank of the anchor B B, the arms 5 C C, the dukes, and D the eye to which the cable is attached. E is the stock, which may be made of the ordinary form and material. It is securely bolted or otherwise fastened to the pendulous loop F, which is hung to the shank A by means of bolt G passing through eyes in tue end of the loop and a hole in the shank, as clearly shown in the drawing.
Thus constructed, the operation is such that when the anchor is dropped the stock E first reaches the ground, and, lying upon it, presents one of the arms of the anchor in the most favorable position for taking an immediate and secure hold of the ground.
Vhat I claim is l. The combination, with an anchor of any ordinary construction, of the stock E, con- PAUL T. WELLS.
