To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN Huerrns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stewartsville, in the county of Belmont and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a lamp holder of the type designed for application to the caps of miners, and has for its primary ob ject to provide a holder which shall be safe in every respect as regards the accidental loss or displacement of the lamp, or the extinguishment of the flame incident to the v1- bratory movement of the lamp, and which shall be exceptionally simple in construction and convenient in use.
Another object is the provision of a lamp holder designed for use in connectnon with carbide lamps of that type which are provided with a supporting hook, the socket receiving the hook of the lamp being provided with a deflecting member preventing penetration of the point of the hook through the skull of the wearer in case of accident, as when the lamp is crushed against the head.
WVith these and other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the novel features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described in the following specification and set forth with particularity in the claims appended hereto.

Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 indicates the body of the improved holder which is preferably constructed of sheet metal of such thickness as to lend adequate strength and rigidity thereto and is provided with terminal forwardly and rearwardly directed portions 6 a 7, espectively which overlie and are secured to the peak or vizor 8 and crown portion 9- of the cap, the medial vertically disposed portion of the body member lying in contact with the crown portion of the cap disposedintermediate the vizor 8 and the top portion 9. The longitudinal edges of the body member are turned back or doubled as indicated at 10 to increase the strength and rigidity of the entire holder and to provide. a retaining means for the cushioning element 11 which is preferably formed of fibre or other sheet material hav ing requisite degree of flexibility to absorb the shocks incident to the striking of the bottom portion of the lamp against the holder. The bight portion connecting the vertical member 5 with the top member 7 is crimped to provide a roll or substantially cylindrical member 12 having the medial portion slotted as at 13 to provide a supplementary holder for the lamp, as will hereinafter appear, and to further increase the strength and rigidity of the holder.
The medial portion of the top 7 is formed with a counter-sunk or inverted conical seat 14 constituting a guide for the terminal of the supporting hook 15 of the carbide lamp 16 whereby the latter may be readily guided into the terminal of the socket 17 which is soldered or otherwise secured to the bottom portion of the top member 7 in such relation that the aperture through the guide member 14 registers with the bore of the socket 17. The socket member 17 is formed from a strip of metal carrying a plate 18 at its lower terminal which lies in facial abutment with. the rear surface of the body member 5 and is provided with turned terminals19.with the tips of the terminals entering clefts 21 in the outer sides of the doubled edges 10 of the body of the holder and thus securely attach the lower terminal of the socket member 17 thereto. A portion of the metallic strip lying intermediate the socket member 17 and the attaching plate 18 is directed away from the body as at 20, or toward the head of the wearer, to provide a deflecting member which, in case of excessive pressure being exerted downwardly upon the top of the lamp 16, causes outward deflection of the terminal of the hook 15 and prevents injury to the head of the wearer. The deflection of the lower portion 18 of the socket 17 further produces a binding action on the terminal of the hook 15 tending to more securely retain the lamp IOU ill
in position and insuring against its accidental displacement. The bight portion of the hook lies within the slot 13 and is thus prevented from swinging laterally upon the holder during movement of the wearer, while the bottom portion of the lamp lies against the cushioning element 11 and is thus prevented from vibrating to such extent as to cause the flame from the burner of the lamp to become extinguished as is "frequently the consequence of violent movement of the wearer in the types of holders now generally used. The inclined wall of the guide portion M provides for the convenient insertion of the terminal of the hook and the socket member 17, and as stated, the peculiar deflection 20 of the lower terminal portion of the socket increases the binding action upon the terminal of the hook to such extent as to prevent its accidental displacement while at the same time not being so great as to prevent the convenient withdrawal of the hook from the socket.
What is claimed is v 1. A lamp holder for attachment to miners cap including a body member provided with an apertured upper portion to receive the terminal of a supporting hook of a lamp, a socket secured to and registering with the aperture in the body member, said socket directed forwardly at the lower end to deflect the terminal of the bill of the hook to frictionally hold the hook in place and with the lower portion of the socket laterally directed and terminating in return bends engaging the side edges of the body member.
2. A lamp holder for attachment to miners caps including a body member having turned over edges and with clefts in said edges, said body being provided with an apertured upper portion to receive the terminal of a supporting hook of a lamp, and a socket secured to and registering with the apertured portion of the body member and having laterally directed lower portion terminating in return bends engaging in the clefts of the turned over edges.
