To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN E. citizen of the United States, of New Rochelle, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to paper guiding devices for typewriting machines and its objectdis to produce a new and improved paper gu1 e.
BARNEY, and resident To the above and other ends which will hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the features of construction, combinations of devices and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims. Y

My invention is shown as applied to a platen carriage and paper table construction corresponding with that disclosed in the pending application of Barney 8; Barr, Sr. No. 582,267, filed Aug. 16, 1922. The platen carriage comprises an inclined rear member composed of a top bar 1, a bottom bar (not shown) and connecting webs 2 which together provide an inclined rear member or plate-like portion 1, 2 having at its ends forwardly extending side bars 3. The carriage or carrier thus constituted carries a rotary cylindrical platen 4. The top bar 1 andthe corresponding bottom bar are oppositely grooved to co-operate through antifriction rollers 5 with fixed grooved guide rails or supports of which the upper one 6 alone appears in the drawing. Mounted on the carriage are a pair of angular brackets, each comprising afoot or base portion 7, an upright portion 8, and, at the top of the latter, anangularly disposed inclined arm or bar-like portion 9. Each bracket 1s preferably unitary, made of a piece of sheet metal, and is secured to one of the webs 2 by a headed screw 10. The two brackets 79 provide a support for a paper table which is formed of two plates or table parts 11 and 12 hinged together so as to afford relative angular movement'between the parts. The plate 11 is inclined upward and rearward behind the platen 4 so as to form a bight therewith to receive the paper when it is inserted. The lower end of the plate 11 is formed with fingers 11 which co-operate with feed roll sections not shown herein but which are disclosed in the previously filed Barney & Barr application aforesaid. Reference may previously filed application and to the patent of Barr & Barney No. 1,447,639, granted March 6, 1923 for fuller details of the carriage and others parts and mechanism associated therewith than it is deemed necessary to show in the present case. The plate or table part 11 is fixed to the carriage of the machine by headed screws 12 which are threaded into depressions or seats indicated at 9" in the bracket arms 9. The depressions 9 accommodate corresponding depressions or counter-sinks 11 in the surface of the plate 11, enabling the heads of the screws 12 to be countersunk below the surface of the plate 11 so that there may be no projections to interfere with the introduction of paper over said. surface. Secured to the back of the plate 11 near its ends as by rivets 13 areupwardly extending arms 14 between which the upper edge portion of the plate 11 is bent or inclined at rearward providing a slightly depressed lip or ledge 15. The arms 14 are made of stock sufficiently thick to enable it to be bored out or perforated to provide bearing openings for a pivot rod 16 which extends length- 100 wise of the plate 11 slightly above and out of contact with the lip 15. The pivot rod 16 is fixed to the upper plate or table part 12 which is provided near its ends with eye members 17 fitting over the rod 16, said 1 rod being fixed to said eye m'embers by cross pins 18. Thus the pivot rod 16 and the plate 12 are secured rigidly together and 'may be turned or swung on their bearings in-the arms 14 so as to afford access from 119 be had to said i the front of the machine to parts normally covered by the table part 12. Said part 12 is angular in cross section and its upper portion is normally substantially horizontal while its forward inclined portion is in line with the lower plate 11 which wholly supports the plate 12. The lower edge of the plate 12 is curved rearward to provide a lip 19 which corresponds with the lip 15 and is separated from the upper face of the rod 16. The two lips 15 and 19 co-operate with the rod 16 to give a finished appearance to the two-part paper table. The upper end portion of the arms 14 act as stops to limit backward rotation of the plate 12 and assist to maintain it in the normal position illustrated in Fig. 1. From the Fig. 1 position the plate 12 may be swung forward until it is upright as shown in Fig. 2, thus exposing the margin stop mechanism of the machine comprising a stop bar 20, 21 and spring pressed margin stops as 22 adjustable therealong, said'bar being mounted on arms 23 which are supported on the upper part of the carriage, all as more fully disclosed in the aforesaid Patent No. 1,447,639.
My novel side edge guide or paper gage shown detached in Figs. 4 and '5 1s preferably made of a single piece of thin sheet metal, said guide being designated as a whole by the reference number 24. The body portion 25 of the guide 24 is flat and rectangular and terminates at one end in a triangular upturned portion 26 which is at right-angles to the body portion and serves as the contact face or abutment that co-operates with the side edge of the work sheets. Projecting from the lower edge of the body portion 25 are two fingers, clips'or prongs 27 which are curved in correspondence with the curvature of the rod 16. These fingers 27 are spaced apart, and midway between them is a third finger or clip 28 which is oppositely curved to fit over the top of the bar 16. The fingers 27 and 28 possess inherently enough spring or resiliency to provide a spring clip or clasp whereby the guide device 34 may be sprung or snapped over the rod or support 16 and frictionally held or maintained thereon. The fingers 27 fit around the front and under side of the bar 16 passing between it and the lip 15, while the intermediate clip or finger 28 passes over the top of the rod and between it and thelip 19. There is sufficient clearance between the clips and the lips 15 and 19 to avoid contact of the parts. The frictional mounting of the guide 24 enables it to be slid along the supporting rod 16 to any. desired position and frictionally held in such position. Also the mounting permits rotary movements ofthe guide 24 on the rodso that said guide may be turned automatically forward on the axis 16 by the table part 12, when said part is swung upward from the Fig. 1 to the Fig. 2 position, or
moved angularly to the part 11. Normally the guide 24 rests with its body portion 25 in contact with the inclined forward portion of the plate 12, so that work sheets when inserted may be passed freely down over the body portion 25 of the guide and the inclined parts of the plates 11 and 12 and into the machine, one of the side edges of each sheet being guided against the contact face or surface 26. When, however, the plate 12 is swung forward on its pivotal axis 16 to expose the stops 22 or for any other purpose. the guide 24 will be forced to turn with it and will be carried rotatively to the Fig. 2 position. When the plate 12 is restored to the normal or Fig. 1 position, a slight rearward pressure on the guide 24 will likewise turn said guide back to normal position. The construction is such that the guide 24 may be adjusted along the front of the paper table substantially the full length of the rod 16 and of the working length of the platen. Furthermore, the guide '24 may be used at either end portion of its support as a side guide, the contact device or portion 26 co-operating with either side edge of the sheet to position it properly lengthwise of the platen. Of course, when the guide 24 is arranged at the left-hand side, the inner -or right-hand vertical face of the contact part 26 will co-operate with the left-hand edge of the work sheet; while when the guide is adjusted at the right, the outer vertical face of the part 26 will provide an abutment for the right-hand side of the work sheet. It is further to be noted that two or more guiding devices such as 24 may be employed and that they may be adjusted on the supporting rod 16 with their upright contact portions close together so that the outer faces of said contact portions may both cooperate with comparatively narrow sheets or strips so as properly to guide said strips into the paper feeding bight of the machine.
lft will be observed that by my invention, there is provided in combination with the platen and a paper table, comprising two parts capable of relative angular movement, a paper guide which is mounted on the hinge rod that is disposed between the two parts of said table; that the paper guide or side edge guide is readily snapped on and detached from its support; that it is slidably supported on the rod and is also capable of rotative movement thereon; that it is made preferably of one piece of metal; that it normally contacts with the inclined portion of the paper table but is yieldable so that the pivoted device or plate forming part of the paper table may be turned on its axis freely and Without obstruction; that the paper guiding device is arranged with its guiding portion at the front face of the table to slide in an opening in the paper table; that said device is supported behind the front face of the table; and that a rod or support is r0- vided in combination'with a paper ui ing' device which is formed with rearwar lyprojecting spring prongs or clips whereby-the device is frictionally attachable to and detachable from its support and clasps the same in such a Way that it may be slid along its support and also turned or given rotative movement thereon.
The guide is arranged below the top of the inclined portion of the paper table being attached between the top and bottom edges of the inclined portion through the rearwardly projecting spring clips. The opening in the table through which the clips project is so filled by thepivot rod 16 that a practically continuous surface is presented and the paper as it is inserted cannot through this opening.
Various changes may be made Without departing from my invention.

3. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a supporting rod, and a onepiece side edge guide supported both slidably and rotatively on said rod.
4. In a typewriting machine the combination of a platen, a paper table, and a side edge guide having a guiding device at the front face of the table and an attaching device behind the front face of the table.
5. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a paper table, a side edge guide having a contact device at the front face of the paper and attaching spring clips projecting backward through an opening in the table, and a support behind the front face of the table with which said clips engage.v
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination'of a platen, a pivoted paper table device in rear of the platen, and a side edge guide normally contactive with saidpaper table device and adjustable therealong, said guide being yieldable so that said paper table device may be turned freely 'on its axis.
7.
