SCHOOL-DESK ATTACHMENT.
Application filed August 15, 1923. Serial No. 657,559.
porting racks capable of being applied to' the outer surface of 'a side wall of a school desk for conveniently supporting pencils, erasers, etc. '4
An object of the invention is to provide a device of the above kind which embodies the desired qualities of simplicity and durability of construction as well as practicability in use.
With the above generalobject in view, and others that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In the drawing, wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of, an attachment constructed in accordance with the present invention shown applied to a school desk,
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the rack detached, and taken on a line above the tray, and
Figure 3 is a substantially central vertical sectional View taken transversely of the attachment.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the invention consists of a frame work or rack 5 preferably composed of cross wires which are suitably attached to each other at the points ,where they cross, and which are so shaped as" to provide a narrow elongated removable reception of a tray 6 of narrow elongated form. This tray is slidably arranged upon the bottom of the rack 5 and removable through the forward end thereof,
and the particular form, of the rack enables.
same to be placed against the outer surface of the side wall 7 of the desk so as to be positioned beneath the projecting adjacent end of the desk top 8 and in front of the projecting end of the desk back 9. The vertical wires at the sides and bottoms of the racks are preferably formed of inverted V-shape at the tops of the same as at 10 and are reinforced by means of a longitudinal runner wire 11 which extends along the top and down the back of the rack. The wire 11 may have projecting ends formedwith eyes as at 12 for reception of screws 13 which are threaded into the top and back walls of the desk for rigidly fastening the rack in place as shown.
With the racks thus attached to the under sid of the projecting portion of the top of the desk, convenient means is provided in which pen holders, pencils, erasers, paint boxes, etc., may be kept. It is well known that when these articles are kept inside of an already overcrowded desk, they are the cause of much loss of time and disorder when the pupil attempts to extract same for use. Likewise, if these articles are kept loosely on top of the desk or in a pencil box, they are frequently knocked off, thereby causing considerable noise and confusion. The use of this rack will give more desk room and obviate loss of time, and the chance of noise and confusion, a boon to both teacher and pupil.
The top and back of'the rack 5 will necessarily slant in conformity with the slanting of the top and back walls of the desk and 'as the rack is narrow, the sameWvill lie wholly within the plane of the end edges of these walls. I
Minor changes may be made without departing from. the spirit and scope of the invention as claime What I claim as new is A device of .the character described comprising a substantially rectangular frame constructed of wire, open at its forward end, the upper portion of said frame being substantially of an inverted V-shaped construction, a reinforcing wire extending longitudinally along the top of the frame, and being bent to. extend downwardly. a ainst theback of the frame, the ends of sai wire having means provided thereon for attaching the same to a supporting structure, and a tray slidably supported in the bottom of said frame. R
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
IDA a. SHRE-EVES.
