Patented Sept. 3, 1935 COUNTER DISPLAY RACK William F. J. Anderl, David City, Nebr. Application November 18, 1933, Serial No. 698,683
1 Claim.
My invention relates to the general class of store furniture, and especially to display racks for use on counters, tables or other horizontal It is the object of my invention to provide a simple, inexpensive, durable and attractive rack or holder for articles of merchandise which are relatively flat and of substantially rectangular form. Shirts, pajamas, and various other articles of apparel are among those which are customarily displayed and sold in packages or in a folded formation adaptable to display in the counter racks provided by my invention. A further object of my invention is to provide a display rack for articles of the class mentioned, adapted to hold a plurality of the articles or packages, and adjustable to accommodate a varying numberthereof, whereby any number of the articles within the capacity of the rack may be securely retained in an upright position, so that inspection thereof is facilitated, and so that any of the articles may be removed from the rack without disturbing the others.
In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a display rack embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same, Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof, and Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
The display rack shown in the drawing is formed principally by two pieces of rather heavy sheet-metal, which may be coated with enamel, lacquer or the like, to provide any desired color or surface characteristics suitable for the particular use for which the racks are intended. One
of the sheet-metal members constitutes the base of the rack and comprises a rectangular body 5 having a flange 6 extending up vertically from the front end thereof, and having along each of its longitudinal edges an inturned flange l.- On the lower side of the base 5 a plurality of pads 8, of felt or the like, are aifixed as shown, said pads being adapted toprevent scratching of any surface on which the rack is supported, and affording frictional contact with the surface to prevent too free sliding of the rack thereon; The second sheet-metal member has a rectangular footportion 9 of which the ends are adapted to fit slidably beneath the inturned flanges 1 of the base-member, and from the rear edge of the footportion 9 the back-plate It) extends upwardly with a slight rearward inclination, the edges of said back-plate it] having notches H therein adjacent to the foot 9, into which the edges of the flanges I extend, as best shown in Fig. 4. The proportions and arrangement of the parts are such that when the base 5 and foot 9 are parallel, the latter may slide freely longitudinally beneath the hooked guide-flanges l, but when there is pressure upon the plate l tending to tilt the foot, the same is caused to bind or cramp between the base and flanges i and thus prevent longitudinal sliding movement of the parts relative to each other.
In the use of the described rack, the articles to be held thereby are disposed in an upright series 10 between the front flange E5 of the base-member and the plate 55 of the sliding back-member, the latter being adjusted longitudinally of the guideflanges 'i to provide a suitable space between the parts for receiving the lower portions of the articles. As shown by the dotted outlines in Fig. 1, 5 which represent a series of folded shirts or the like, the several articles in the rack are inclined to stand parallel with the back-plate ID, the rear unit of the series leaning against said back-plate, so that all of the articles are maintained normally in an upright position, with a slight rearward inclination, and with their lower edges resting upon the base and upon the foot of the backmember. From the normal position thereof the front articles of the series may be tilted forwardly to facilitate inspection of the units, without removing anyof the same from the rack, or any one or more of the articles may be removed from the rack without disturbing the others.
Now, having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a counter display rack, a sheet-metal basemember comprising a rectangular horizontal body having at one end an upturned flange and longitudinal inturned flange-portions forming parallel guides adjacent the edges of the horizontal body, and a back-member of sheet-metal comprising a foot-portion slidably received in the guides and an upstanding plate from said foot-portion substantially above the horizontal body in variable spaced relation to' the upturned flange of the base-member, said upstanding plate being inclined and the weight thereof being adapted to normally induce substantially vertical pressure of the free end of the foot-portion in the guides to frictionally maintain the back-member in sli dable positions, said upstanding plate having notches slidably receiving the inturned portions of the parallel guides, the edges of said notches being adapted to normally bindingly grip said inturned portions of the guides.
