To @ZZ w71 om t may concern Beit known that I, LLnwnLrN M. R-nnn, a
.citizen ,of the .United States, residing ,atVK
Dudley, in the count-y of orcester and `Commonwealth .of Massachusetts, have .in- .vented a new `VAand useful `Improvement in Aa Sweep-Stick-Supporting `Fixture for Looms, of which ,the following, ,together with the accompanying drawings, yis ag'speciicatiOn.
My invention relates ,toa shuttle driving mechanism for looms `and has for `its objectV to provide an improved arrangement forV transmitting power fordriving the shuttle yfrom.thesweep arm to the picker stick.
In shuttle 'driving -mechanisms v as heretofore constructed, itihas usually been customary to kconnect the picker ,stick to the sweep arm by means of a ylug` strapembracing .the picker `stick and the upperk .end .of a -support Vwhich .serves to .hold the ,end o .the .sweep arm a `predetermined distanceabove the ypivotal `support oI the support.. The power .stickV is preferably made adjustable with respect to the pivotal support of the. picker stick, so that the throw .ofthe picker stick can be varied. In the above .described arrangement of parts, both the picker stick and the Ysweep arm support are loosely retained' by the lngV strap', so that in the operation of the shuttle driving mechanism, considerable lossof motion occurs with a resultant wear between the various parts,
thereby necessitating frequent renewal of the tle driving mechanism embodying my in-L vention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of a portion of the parts shown in Fig. 1.-
Fig. 3 is an end view of the parts shown in Fig. 2.
Fig 4t is a plan lview of the parts shown `in `Fig. 32.,
Fig. is ahorizontal sectional vview along the line .5--5 o 'of Fig. 2.
Y Fig. Y(3 is a perspective view `of Imy improved xture .for connecting the supportto thesweep arm.

Asfbestshownin Figs. 2 and ,4, the lpicker stick 3 is embraced by a jU-shaped lugstrap 7, the ends ot' which are securedltolthe sweep arm 6 by means of afbolt 8. An adjustable sweep varm support@ is. also pivotally mount# `ed .on the kstud 4c and `the upper end thereof` 1s connectedlto the swee yarm 6 by ,means of a lixture 10 which, as best shown in Fig. 6,
`consists of a dat `base portion. 1l which is provided with acentral opening` 12 for receiving the bolt 8 which secures the lug strap 7 to the sweep arm. The base portion 11 s further provided with ears 13 which are adapted to embrace one side of the lug strap 7 when the base portion 11 of the lixture is held in close engagement with the lug strap 7 my means ot the bolt S, as best shown in Fig. 8.
When the sweep arm 6 is moved back and forth during the operation of the loom, it is obvious that its movement willbe transmitted to the picker stick 3 by reason of its connection thereto by the lug strap 7. The throw, or amplitude of the movement of the picker stick 3, will be determined by the distance which the sweep arm 6 is held above the pivotal axis of the picker stick 3 by the support 9. Vhen the picker stick 3 is driven by the sweep arm 6 it is 'obvious that there will be substantially no lost motion in the mechanism, owing` to the fact that the support 9 is connected to the sweep arm 6 independently of the lug strap 7 by means of my improved iiXture. Consequently, the wear of the lug strap 7 is very materially reduced, as compared withprior constructions, in which bothk the picker stick and sweepv arm support were embraced by the lug strap. It will be readily seen that the use of my improved lixture permits oi closer adjustment of the length of the picker stick, for the reason that the lug 15 definitely positions the end of the sweep arm 6 on the support, whereas in prior constructions the support was only loosely connected to the sweep arm by means of a strap. Furthermore, my improved iXture prevents the lug strap 7 from slipping down on the picker stick, owing to the fact that the ears 18 embrace the lug strap and prevent it from turning about the bolt 8.
A still further advantage to be gainedby the use of my improved fixture lies in the fact that the possibility of smashes occurring in the shuttle box, due to interference between the sweep stick and the picker arm support, is substantially eliminated by connecting the support to the sweep arin indcpendently of the picker stick and of the lug strap. l/Vith the possibility of such smashes substantially eliminated, it is apparent that the production of looms equipped with my improved shuttle driving' mechanism will that by my invention I have provided an i improved shuttle driving mechanism in which the wear on the parts is reduced to a minimum by the substantial elimination of lost motion and by which the operation of the loom as a whole is improved, due to closer adjustment of the throw of the picker stick and the substantial elimination oit smashes in the shuttle boX.
While I have shown my invention as embodied in a particular arrangement of the parts ot a loom, it is not so limited, but is capable ott being applied to other types of looms without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. I desire, therefore, that only such limitations be imposed thereon as may come within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim,
In a. shuttle driving mechanism for looms, the combination with a sweep arm, a pivotally mounted picker stick and a support pivotally mounted on the same axis as said picker stick, of a lug strap carried by said arm for loosely embracing said picker stick and a rfixture carried by said sweep arm providing a lug to which the upper end ot Said support is pivotally connected,'and a pair of ears 'for positioning said lug strap.

Certificate of Correction.
It is hereby certified that in Letters Patent No. 1,517,314, granted December 2. 1924, upon the application o Llewelyn M. Reed, of Dudley, Massachusetts, for an improvement in SweepStick-Supporting Fixtures for Looms, errors appear in the lprinted specification requiring correction as Jfollows: Page 1, line 23, strike out the Word support, second occurrence, and insert instead the Words picker stick, and line 24, for the Words power stick read support; page 2, lines 43 and 44, strike out the Words stick and the picker arm support and insert instead am suppm and the picker stick; and that the said Letters Patent should be read with these corrections therein that the saine may conform to the record of the Case in the Patent Olice.
