To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, IRVING F. WEBB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lighting Devices for Sewing Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to electric lighting devices for sewing machines and has for an object to provide a lighting attachment of the type disclosed in my copending applica tion Serial No. 522,232, filed December 14, 1921, with improved cushioning means for supporting the lighting element or lamp so that it will not be subjected to the pounding vibration of the sewing machine frame, thus permitting the use of lamp-bulbs having filaments of the more delicate types, such as tungsten filaments.

A further object of the invention is to provide a lighting attachment having only a limited range of yielding movement and confined against excessive accidental. displacement from. its working position.

Still further, the invention has for an object to provide a lighting device which is not susceptible of slow periodic vibrations of large amplitude.

To the ends in view the supporting element of the attachment has secured thereto an overhanging lamp supporting arm from which depend one or more yielding suspension elements or springs. Preferably, two suspension connections are used, one adjacent each end of the lighting element. The lighting element may be in the form of rigidly associated electric lamp-socket, bulb and reflector elements, sustained by said suspension means horizontally below the over hanging lamp-supporting arm. When two suspension connections are employed, one is preferably attached to the reflector and the other to the lamp-socket; said reflector being preferably made of rather heavy sheetmetal to increase the inertia of the floating parts. such axis as may be necessary to position the lampsupporting arm above the lamp. The conductor-cord preferably passes freely through the hollow cylindrical supporting head to the lamp-socket and serves to prevent encessive lateral displacement of the lamp-socket from its pendant position and to damp any swinging or slow periodic vibrating tendency of the lighting element as a whole.

In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is a rear side elevation of a sewing machine to which is applied a lighting attachment embodying the present improvement. Fig. 1 is a detail sectional view. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the lighting attachment as applied to, the machine; the standard or vertical member of the sewing machine gooseneck being shown in horizontal section and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3, 3, Fig. 1.

The particular embodiment of the invention hereinafter described is illustrated as applied to a sewing machine having a bed 1, standard 2 and overhanging arm 3 terminating in the head 4.- which carries the usual presser-foot 5 and reciprocating needle 6. The lighting element preferably comprises the lamp-socket 7, reflector 8 and lamp-bulb 9. .The reflector 8 is preferably made of rather heavy sheet-metal and constitutes the upper half of the lamp-guard 10 which is securely clamped in a wellknown manner at 11 upon the socket 7.

Disposed above the lightin element is the lamp-supporting arm 12 which is preferably made as long as the lighting element and is curved downwardly at its free end to follow the curve of the reflector 8 and approach the tip end 13 of the latter which is suspended from the arm 12 by the springl i. A suspension connection is also preferably made adjacent the socket end of the lighting element as by providing an ear 7 and spring 15. The ear 7 is preferably circularly adjustable about the axis of the socket 7 and is securely clamped in. adjust ed position relative to said socket by means of the tubular thumb-nut 7" having a resensitive enough to be materially distended by theweight of the suspended parts. The

end of the'arm 12 adjacent'the lamp-socket 7 is preferably extended vertically for a shortdistance and is bent into circular form and fitted with a thumb-screw 16 to provide a clamp 17, the center of which issubstantially coincident with the center line of the lighting element. The clamp 17, when employed, may embrace a hollow horizontal cylindrical head 18 of a vertical post 19 v to the lowerend of which is fixedly secured aserrat'edclamping disk 20. Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what I claim herein is- 1. A lighting device comprising supporting'means adapted to besecured to'the frame of a sewing machine, an electric lanipsocket .and semi-cylindrical reflector rigidly connectedin end-to-end relation, and suspension springs between said supporting means and said socket and reflector, respectively, said springs supporting said socket and reflector horizontally. 2. A lighting device comprising a support adapted to be secured to the frame of asejwwith said supporting arm.

3. A lighting 'device comprising a support adapted to be secured to the frame of a sewing machine, a substantially horizontally disposed lighting element including a lamp-socket, bulb and reflector, a lampsupporting arm connected at one end to said support and extending above and longitudinally of said lighting element, and yielding means for suspending said lighting element substantially horizontally from said support, said arm beingcircularly adjustable relative to said support about the center line'of the lighting'element as an axis.

A lighting device comprising a supporting base adapted to be'securedto the frameof'a sewing machine, a head universally adjustable on said base, an arm circalarly adjustable on saidhead about a substantially horizontal axis, and a lighting element suspended substantially horizontally from said arm and having its axis in substantial coincidence with'the axis of adjustment of said arm. 1

5. A lighting device comprising a lighting element including a lamp socket and bulb, a tubular supporting head spaced from said socket and having its aperture substantially in line with the center lineof said socket, a supporting arm secured to said head and overhanging said lighting element, suspension springs supporting said lighting element from said arm, and a conductor-cord passing through said head to said lamp-socket.
