REVOLVING DOOR.

To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, CECIL ALEXANDER ELLIOTT, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Gosbrook Road, Caversham, Reading, in the county of Berks, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Revolving Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates stile doors.
The object of the invention is by the adoption of spring hinges of a suitable pattern as the hinges or pivots of the leaves of'the central revolving body, where such leaves are made movable, to render the latter sothat after they are turned from their normal position to open the doorway they may be automatically returned to close the doorway. a
It applies to the kind of door, the revolving portion of which is composed of a central screen axially arranged through the centre of the. outer casing of the enclosin framework, which screen has wings projectto revolvingv turning from the ends, which together with the screen approximately form the letter H in plan, and are known as two-compartment revolving turnstiledoors; and further to where it is desirable that thecentral screen body shall contain a door or doors which" open both ways on hinges or pivots.
According to my invention, I arrange the central screen doors, so that they are adapted to close automatically by. the application of suitable springs or other resilient means to the hinges or pivots on which the central door screen is carried.
This automatic construction may also be applied to revolving turnstile doors having radial leaves revolving about a central axis, and where it is desirable that the leaves shall close self-actingly.
Also I may provide, when necessary, means in connection withthe spring controlled pivots to prevent the-leaves closing violently, and the said means may be in the form of air or oil checks or other suitable device.
By means of my invention I obtain a combination of a revolving door and spring swung doors, the latter of which are selfclosing.
The accompanying drawings illustrate structures in accordance with the vention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of a revolving door.
Figure 2 is a sectional plan through the present in line AB of Figure 1, showing curved wings.
Figure 3 is a sectional plan similar to Figure 2, but having flat wings with extensions instead of. curved wings as in Fig. 2, Fig. 3 also showing said extensions movably connected as by a hinge, but said extensions may be rigidly connected, as by integral formation with the wing; and either type can be'used at one or both sides of the structure.

The spring hinges comprise a casement I b attached to the door, within the casement is a central pivotb positively fixed at its lower end 6 in a ball bearing device 6 upon the inember b. At each side of the central pivot b is a roller 1), carried by a stud b", and adapted, when the door is turned to i press against a slidable block b and so tension a spring I) attached to the block b at one end and supported by bearers b in which it is free to slide at both ends.
On turning'the central door screen memerated through the hinge pin by-the movement of the door members to compress the springs, which when the door members are released react toreturnthe said members.
The central leaves a of the door are held in closed position by spring catches or bolts d, see Figure 1, and it is necessary to withh in order to adjust them in their relation to the outer circular screen 7' or to allow of their being folded inwards upon the central door body g, see Figures 2, 3, 7, 8 and 10, such hinges or pivots, or the movements thereof, being controlled by springs k 1f desirable, or other resilient means, see Figure 10.
In order to ensure that the leaves 7'' shall be held in their roper position, brackets Z, see Figures 2, 3, 8, 9 andlO, are provided attached to the central body frame 9 with means of attachment at their ends to allow for a justments being made. These bracktion therewith.

The central body 9 with folded leaves f is turnable at right angles to its central axis or line of suspension and when secured in this position by bolts or catches it provides clear gangways n on either side, see Figure 7, and direction of arrows on either side.
In order to give as. much space as possible in these gangways, it may be desirable to make the wings f flat or with slight curvature, as it is obvious that if flat wings f are employed, these when folded will provide more gangway space. These have wide outer extensions 0 joined on at such an angle as will allow them to follow approximately the curve of the outer framing or. screen y,

' In the case of a two-compartment door,
which has been folded, I arrange that the whole of the revolving portions are movable to one side, after folding wings 7 upon the central 'door body 9, by means of tracks in the form of guide-ways 70 positioned in the roof and floor.
Any or all of the collapsing arrangements described-can be brought into action by the movement of one or more levers or other suitable means, mechanically or electrically operable torelease them automatically, so as lllll to facilitate the opening of the revolving door in case of panic.
In doors of the two-compartment type it is necessary in order to allow free movement of" the surfaces, that actual contact shall .not. take place between the extended wings f and the outer casing j, and in order to meet this condition I provide cushions r 7 on the outer casing 7', see Figure 6, which are adjustable as regards projection, in
order .to give the most effective results in preventing draughts.
