OPERATING MECHANISM FOR HAND PUMPS Filed March 2'7. 1923 aw/322624715 J2:
Patented Nov. 25, 1924.
UNITED STATES JACOB RICHARDS, JR., 0:? LA FARGE, WISCONSIN.
OPERATING MECHANISM FOR HAND PUMPS.
Application filed March 2'7, 1923. Serial No. 628,031.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAooB RICHARDS, JR, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Fargo, in the county of Vernon and State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Operating Mechanism for Hand Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide an operating mechanism for hand pumps, that will considerably reduce the amount of manual labor necessary in actuating the pump piston.
In hand pumps of which I am at present familiar, the operating handles therefor are usually attached to pump heads, and when these handles are actuated, considerable weight is applied to the head, which very frequently resultsin the breakage of these heads.
It is therefore the primary object of this invention to provide a hand operating mechanism for hand pumps, wherein the operating lever is so connected to the pump as to more equally distribute the force of leverage upon a greater area of the pump head, and at the same time substantially reduce the amount of pressure necessary in the raising and lowering of the piston within the pump.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein Figure 1is a side elevation of a pump equipped with my improved operating mechanism.
Figure 2-is a detail transverse cross section upon the line 22 of Figure 1, and
Figures 3, 4 and 5are perspectives of several of the elements comprised in my invention.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 5 designates broadly the pump casing and 6 the piston rod, it of course being understood that I do not wish to limit myself to the specific pump shown in the drawings.
My invention per se, embodies the provision of a two part clamp 7, that is positionedupon the said pump casing, and at a point adjacent the upper end thereof. The inner ends of each clamp section are formed with extensions 8, to which are pivotally secured at 9 levers 10. As more clearly shown in Figure 4, the opposite ends of,
these levers are yoked at 11, and pivotally secured between the lower yoked ends of these levers 10 is the relatively large yoke end 12 of a lever 13. This lever extends upwardly, and is yoked at its opposite end at 14, for straddling a projection 15 upon the usual hand lever 16, to which portion the same is pivotally secured.
The opposite yoked ends of the said lever IOengage over connecting rods 17, it being noted that these rods are provided with a plurality of spaced openings 18 at their lower ends for permitting of the pivotal connection of the said levers 1O thereto. The upper ends of these connecting rods 17 are bent inwardly at right angles, and then upwardly, and are pivotally connected at 19 to the end of the said hand lever 16, this end of the lever being in turn operatively connected to the pump piston rod 6.
In view of the above description, it will at once be apparent to those skilled in the art, that I have provided a highly improved form of operating mechanism for hand pumps, wherein the force of pressure usually occasioned upon a specific point of the pump head is evenly distributed throughout a greater area of the pump head, this operating mechanism being of such a nature as to also considerably reduce the amount of manual labor necessary in the actuation thereof.
Although I have herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
1. A pump attachment including a pair of co-operating bracket members having means for securing said members to a pump casing, said members being formed with extensions, lever members pivotally mounted on said extensions intermediate the ends thereof, the pump having a pump rod and an opera ting handle pivotally connected at one end there to, adjustable link connections between one end of said lever and the pivotal connection between the handle and the pump rod, and a link connection between the intermediate portion of the handle and the other end of said levers whereby the leverage between the pump operating handle and the pump rod will be increased and the relation of the handle to the pump rod and the lever may be changed by adjustment of the first mentioned link connection.
2. An operating attachment for hand pumps including a pair of separable bracket members having extensions on one end thereof, means for removably securing said bracket members to a pump casing, a pair of operating levers pivotally mounted intermediate their ends on the extensions of said bracket members, a pair of links having an adjustable connection at one end with corresponding ends of the operating lever and pivotally connected at the opposite ends with the pivotal connection of the hand lever with the pump rod, and a link pivotally connected at one end with the operating lever, and pivotally connected at the opposite end with the intermediate portion of the hand lever, whereby said attachment produces an increased leverage of the hand lever, and the relative position between the hand lever and the operating lever may be adjusted through the adjustment of said pair of links.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
