To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, MARIUs CLAUDE Con- DEL, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, and resident of Halkirk, in the county of Red Deer and Province of Alberta, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nail and Spike Pullers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in nail and spike pullers and has for its primary object the provision of a tool of the character stated which will be of simple and inexpensive construction, composed of the minimum number of parts and which may be readily manufactured at the minimum cost.
The invention has for another object the provision of a. nail and spikepuller which will be constructed in such a manner that the gripping jaws will be brought closer to gether as the handle is depressed to raise the working ends of the j aws together with the nail or spike engaged therebetween.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a spike and nail puller of the character stated in which the gripping jaws will be provided with bevelled faces between which operates the wedge face portion of the handle, so that movement of the handle in one direction will cause separation of the gripping portions of the jaws while operation of the handle in the reversed direction will eause separation of the rear portions of the gripping jaws to force the working ends of the gripping jaws toward one another and cause the same to grip firmly the nail or spike engaged therebetween while at the same time Withdrawing the spike or nail.
The invention has for a still further object the provision of a nail and spike puller of the character stated which may be effectively employed on nails and spikes of various characters and sizes, the tool being constructed so that the gripping jaws operate upon the same pivot member as the handle and the latter so constructed that a portion thereof serves as a wedge member to force apart either the working ends of the gripping jaws or the opposite ends thereof, ac cording to the direction of movement of the handle. construction, combination and arrangement of co-operating elements as hereinafter more specifically set forth, claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings forming a part of the present application, in which;

Referring more in detail to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 10 designates the gripping jaws which are of elongated form and are mounted at their central or body portions on the pivot member 11 which is extended loosely therethrough and has heads 12 formed on its oppositeends and which are adapted to be received in the sockets or recesses 13 provided for this purpose in the outer faces of the gripping jaws 10 when the latter are moved outwardly to their outermost positions upon the pivot member 11.
By referring to Figs. 1 and 3, it will be seen that the body or central portions of the gripping jaws 10 are of considerable height while ,their extended working ends 7 14 are lower and extended from a point below the pivot member 11.
It will also be seen that the working ends 14 of the gripping jaws 10 are beveled on their upper faces toward their free ends. By referring to Figs. 2, 3 and 4 it will be clearly seen that the working ends 14 of the gripping jaws 10 are also bevelled on their side faces and have registering inclined slots 15 in their inner faces which are at all times substantially parallel with one another. The slots 15 are provided to receive the shank of the nail or spike to be extracted. Figs. 1 and 3 disclose the bracing lugs 16 provided on the under face of. the Working ends 14: to normally space these working ends 14 of the gripping jaws 10 from the face of the member holding the nail or spike. Figs. 1 and 3 also show clearly the inclined rear end 17 of the gripping jaws 10.
By referring to Fig. 2 of the drawings it will be clearly seen that the body or central portion of the gripping jaws 10 and the inclined rear portion 17 are narrower than the forward. working ends 14 thereof and Spaced farther apart on the pivot member 11, thereby providing slightly beveled and spaced shoulders 18 at the inner corners of the forward working ends 14. This view also discloses clearly the inwardly bevelled faces 19 of the inclined rear end 17 of the gripping jaws 10.
The operating handle 20 is of substantially oval shape form in cross section as will be readily understood by referring to Fig, 2. The offset lower end 21 of the operating handle 20 is loosely mounted on the pivot member 11 between the gripping jaws 10. A bevelled wedge projection or cam member 22 is provided on the rear edge of the operating handle 20 near the offset lower end 21 thereof, for operation on the bevelled faces 19 at the rear end of the gripping jaws 10 as the operating handle 20 is swung rearwardly on the pivot member 11. The forward edge of the operating handle 20, near the offset lower end 21 thereof, operates against the bevelled shoulders 18 forwardly of the pivot member 11 when the operating handle 20 is swung forwardly overthe pivot member 11. The operating handle 20 may be reinforced on its opposite sides by means of the longitudinal ribs 23 extending along the main portion thereof, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The upper or free end 24 of the operating handle 20 is flattened on opposite sides and curved, terminating in a sharp edge which is also bifurcated to provide the nail or spike engaging claw 25, shown clearly in Fig. 5.
It is believed the complete construction and operation may now be readily understoodfro-m the foregoing paragraphs taken in connection with the accompanying drawings without further detail description. It may be briefly stated, however, that when the gripping jaws 10 are to be engaged with a nail or spike to be drawn or extracted, the bottom faces of the gripping jaws 10 are placed on the surface from which the na1l or spike is projecting and the operating handle 20 is then swung forwardly on the pivot member 11 until the forward edge of the operating handle 20 rides on the bevelled shoulders 18 sufliciently to force apart the forward or working ends 14 of the gripping jaws 10.. The tool is then brought forwardly until the nail or spike is engaged in one pair of slots" 15, after winch the operating handle 20 is swung rearwardly on the pivot member 11, causing the wedge projection or lug 22 to ride on the bevelled faces 19 and force apart the rear inclined ends 17 of the gripping jaws 10, causing the forward or working ends 14 of the gripping aws 10 to firmly grip the nail or spike. This rearward and downward pressure on the operating handle 20 also serves to lift or force upwardly the forward or working ends 14 of the gripping jaws 10. As rearward and downward movement of the operating handle 20 is continued, the wedge or cam projection 22 moves downwardly and engages the surface on which the tool is operating and then serves a fulcrum on which the entire gripping jaws 10 are raised as the downward movement of the operating handle 20 continues. It is apparent that the forward or working ends 14 of the gripping jaws 1O constantly tighten upon the nail or spike being withdrawn to retain a firm grip thereon. Itis also evident that the nail or spike may be readily released by reversing the movement of the operating handle 20. It is frequently necessary when employing tools of this character to first obtain a grip upon the head ofthe nail or spike to be withdrawn and raise the same from the surface a sufiicient distance to permit proper gripping of the shank of the nail or sp-ikel by the gripping jaws 10. The nail or spike engaging a claw 25 at the free end 24 of the operating handle 20 may be readily employed for this purpose.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been disclosed, it 'is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction combination and arrangement of cooperating elements may be resorted to within. the scope of what is claimed without departing from thespirit of the invention.

A nail and spike puller including opposed gripping jaws; a pivot member extended transversely through the central portions of said jaws; said jaws having bevelled shoulders on their forward portions and adjacent the pivot member; said gripping jaws having rearwardly inclined bevelled inner faces on theirrearwardly extended portions and rearwardly of the pivot member; and an operating handle mounted at its lower extremity on said pivot member and having bevelled forward and rear edges and a bevelled wedge projection depending from its lower portion; said bevelled wedge projection and the bevelled rear cdgeofthe operating handle being adapted for operation on the rearwardly inclined bevelled faces when the handle is swung rearwardly on said pivot member to force apart the rear portions of said gripping jaws and swing the gripping aws on said pivot member to move the forward portions of the gripping members toward one another; said bevelled Wedge projection being adapted to extend past the rear face of said gripping jaws and serve as the fulcrum, at times; said forward portions of the gripping jaws being adapted to be forced apart by the operation of the bevelled forward edge of the operating handle on the vertical bevelled shoulders of the gripping jaws when the operating handle is swung forward 011 said pivot member; said gripping jaws cariying spacing lugs on the under face of their forward portions to raise the same from the member on which the nail and spike puller is placed.
