FOLDING PAPER DEVICE, INCLUDING ITS CONSTITUTE-NT BLANK.
Application filed April '6, 1923. Serial No. 630,213.
stituent Blank, of which the following is aspecification.
My present invention relates to essentially tubular devices of ovaloid cross-section suitable for use as containers, or otherwise,
and composed of a unitary sheet of paper, or
similarly bendable material, and of such form and construction as to be storable or shippable in their fiat, i. e. in knockeddown form, and, when required, setup for use.
Hitherto commercially and practicably utilizable unitary tubular types of such devices, set-up without adhesive or other fasteners, have, I believe, been of rectangular,
or polygonal, cross-section transverse their central lon itudinal axes, their exteriors corresponding y presenting lateral angular projections or relatively sharp corners.
It has become desirable that such containers be made of size and shape such as to carry conveniently in the users pocket, for example, small articles such as medical tablets, cigarettes, etc, in which case their referred to angularities are more or less'objectionable not only mechanically but also as unconforming with conventional. standor rounded'exteriors as for example in present cigarette packages or cases.
The objects of my present invention comrise provision of a readily and economicaly made blankof such form and construction as to satisfythe referred to requirements and as to be firmly and accurately set up for-use and thereafter easily manipulated without exercise of any special skill.
I attain these objects by the type of blank productive of a container such as illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- I Figure 1 is a view of the blank; 1 V
Figure 2 is a perspective of the container set up from the blank of Figure 1;
;Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure '2.
ards requiring mostly unangular, i; e; curved Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
My unitary blank, as shown in Figure 1,
in the knocked down position outwardly project from said body section and which, on setting up the blank, are inwardly bent relatively to said body along 'intermediately disposed, hereafter described creased, 0r scored,'bend lines in the material. These flaps, as hereafter 'escribed, constitute means essentially carried by the body member 4 to, on settingup of the device, close the open ends of the tube and also contribute to maintenance of its sides in their de-.
sired outwardly circular or bulging form.
Relatively, straight scored, or creased bend lines 10, 10, are made in the material intermediate the body section 4: and the flaps 7, 7, and on which the latter are bendable as aforesaid.
Similar bend lines 11, 11, are, for a similar purpose, similarly located intermediate said body section 4 and the flaps 9, 9'.
In the bend lines 11, 11, are slots 12, 12' out through the material.
The flaps 7, 7 comprise tongues 5, 5', cooperative with the slots 12, 12 and bendable on creased or scored lines 13, 13'.
" Inwardly circular scored or creased bend j A slot 15 is cut through thematerial intermediate the main body section 4 and the said part thereof 4. The'bodyt'section 4 also comprises'a part thereof, 4" carrying a tongue 16 cooperative with the slot 15.
Inwardly circular scored orcreased bend lines 14 1d, are made in the material intermediate the part 4; of the body section 4 curved bend lines 14?, 14 14, 14a, respectively, thereby imparting corresponding outw wardly curved contours to the sides 4, 4'.
'llhe flaps 9, 9' are turned in on the respective bend lines 11, 11' until about rectangular to the central axis of the semi-cylindrical body. section 4, the flaps 7, 7 similarly turned in on the respective bend lines 10, 10 and the tonguesb, 5, inserted in their cooperative slots 12, 12, or, if preferred the flaps 9, 9' may be turned in in advance ot the flaps 6, 6, 8, 8.
The inwardly circular bend lines cooperate with the inwardly circular side edges of the part 4? of the body 4: to cause and maintain the curvatures of the material required to impart the desired partially rounded or circular conformation of the exterior of my device or container. 7
Having now described my invention, what ll claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is the following, viz:
1. A parallelogrammatic foldable container formed from a single pieceof material comprising a flat body portion having two rectangular, oppositely-disposed, outwardly circular sides held in correspondingly circular bent lines at each of the four corners when the container is set up.
2. A. parallelogrammatic foldable container formed from a single piece of material com rising a body portion having flat top and ttom members, two rectangular, oppositely disposed outwardly circular sides, and inturned end aps of the same width as the depth of the container bendable on circular lines to hold said sides at both ends in said circular position.
3. A parallelogrammatic foldable container formed froma single piece of material detachably secured in ovaloid form with top and bottom flat and mutually parallel, and having two rectangular, oppositely dis- 7 posed, outwardly circular sides maintained in correspondingly circular bent lines at each of the four corners when the container is set up. i
4:. A parallelogramm'atic foldable container formed-from a single iece of material comprising a body portion etachably held in tubular form having both top and bottom flat l and having two rectangular, oppositely disposed, outwardly circular sides, and inturned end flaps of the same width as the depth of the container-bendable at right angles on circular lines to hold said sides in curved position at each of the four corners.
5. A unitary paper blank for a foldable container comprising a bed portion detachably held in tubular ovaloid form in crosssection with flat rectangular top and bottom members, outwardly circular sides interalwith both top and bottom, inturned end swaps of the same width as the depth of the container bendable on circular lines from the sides tomaintain the latter in position at width as the depth of the container bendable on circular lines from the sides to maintain the latter in position at the four corners, and
integral flaps projecting outwardly from the top and bottom at both ends and folded over said inturned end fla s and secured to the body to hold the bla in set-up position.
7. A unitary paper blank for a foldable container comprisin a, body portion detachably held in tu ular' ovalo1d form in cross-section with fiat rectangular top and bottom members, outwardly circular sides integral with both top and bottom, end fla s havingsubstantially the same width as t e depth of the contamer tomaintain the latter in position at the four corners bendable on circular lines from the sides, and integralflaps projectingoutwardly from the top llQlID its and bottom at both ends and folded over said inturned end flapsand secured to the body to hold the blank in set-u ;---sition.
