VEGEABLE CUTTER.
Application fi1ed March 24, 1924..

Be it known that we, BERNHARD M. BERNTSON and JOSEPH E. NORDGREN, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county et C001: and State of lllinois have invented certain new and useful Iniprovements in Vegetable Cutters; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to malte and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved vegetable cutter, but has more particular reference to an imple1nent of this l:ind which is especially, but not necessarily adapted ter peeling potatoes.
The principal feature of construction and resultant advantage of the invention consists in the provision of a finger-encircling elernent Which is equipped with a laterally disposed extension to overlie and engage an adjacent finger on the band of the user to assist in holding the cutting means, with which said element is equipped, in operative position.
More specifically speaking, it is a feature of the invention to construct the entire cutting implement tronc a single piece of material, the aforesaid extension being struck out from the finger-encircling clament, as is the cutter.
Other objects and advantages of the invention Will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings for1ning a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a vegetable cutter constructed in accordance With this invention, showing the manner in Which the same is attached to the users band.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the cutter.
Figure 3 is a cross section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal or vertical section taken on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
As before stated, the entire vegetable cutter is, by preference, constructed from a single piece of material. In practice, it is contemplated utilizing pliable steel for the purpose. As will be observed from the drawing, the metal is stamped or out by a die to form an elonga'ted piece which is bent upon itself to form a finger-encircling band Serial No. 701,474.
or element 1. One end of this band is provided with longitudinally spaced openings 2, and the other end of the band overlaps the first named end. and has tongues 3 struck out from it, extended through the openings 2, and then bent against the outer side of the band to connect the two ends together. An elongated strip-like portion 4 is struck out from the top part of the band and is bent to dispose it in spaced relation to said band. One edge of this portion 4 is then sharpened as indicated at 5 and a cutting blade is thus provided.
As before stated, means is associated with the finger-encircling band to hold it against rotation so that the cutting 1neans Wlll be in proper position to insure easy manipulation at all times. The means under consideration comprises an extension 6 which is struck out from the band and is bent laterally as indicated at 7. This extension 6 is curved t0 conform to the middle finger of the users hand and in practice, it overlies this finger as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. Hence, rotation of the band in a direction toward the 1niddle finger Will be thus prevented. F rom the extension 6, a portion 8 is struck and this constitutes a corer. That is, the part 8 can be utilized for removing eyes fro1n potatoes or bad spots tron1 fruits.
In practice, the finger-encircling band 1 is fitted onto the forefinger as illustrated in Fig. 1 and the arcuate extension 6 is pe mitted t0 overlie the middle finger. With the parts in this position, the cutting edge 5 is disposed in a position to permit it to beeffectively engaged with the skin ot' the vegetable for scraping, peeling or otherwise removing the same. As before stated, the extension 6 prevents rotation of the band about the finger. If it is 'necessary to remove bad spots from the article being acted on, the corer 8 can be used.
Although, we have shown and described a specific type of vegetable cutter, we wish it to be understood that miner changes in shape and size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the scope of the subjoined claim.
We claim:
A vegetable cutter comprising an clongated piece of metal bent upon itself and having its free ends secured together to form a fingenencircling band, said band being slitted at circumferentially spaced points to provide a transverse striplike portion which is bent outwardly to dispose it in spaced relation to the band, 011e edge 01" said portion being sharpened to provide a cutoing 5 blade, the1e being a comparatively long portien thrnst outwardly from one side of the band and bent to extend tangentially thereto to provide a finger-engaging extensiom sad extension being bent between its ends t0 cm form to the finger which i: is adapted to 1 engage and overle.
In testmony whereof We have hereunio affixed our signatures.
BERNHARD M. BERNTSON. JOSEPH E. NORDGREN.
