Be it known that I, lVrLLrAM OSCAR HERN- DoN, a citizen of the United States,,residing in the county of Haywood and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Backhand Buckles, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to buckles adapted to be used in connecting two members together and is more particularly adapted for the use where one of said members is suspended by the other.

An object of the invention is to so arrange the clamping parts of the buckle that tension on one of said parts will cause a binding action of the clamping parts upon the member to be clamped therebetween.

Another object of the invention is to so construct one of said clamping members that a strap or chain may be connected. therewith in a manner such that it will not become accidentally desconnected and at the same time may be readily disconnected by hand.

Another object is to so construct and arrange the clamping members of the buckle that clamping action thereby will not do injury to the object clamped therebetween.

Other objects will appear in connection with the following specification and claims.

Referring to the drawings:

Figure 1 shows my invention as applied to the back band of a harness, the harness being shown fragmentary.

Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2, Fig. 1 and;

Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3, Fig. 2, showing the relation of parts as illustrated in Figure 1.

Referring to the drawings in detail;

10 designates a portion of the back band of a harness; 11 is a rectangular plate comprising a part of my invention, said plate being provided with slots 12 lying adjacent to and parallel with the longitudinal edges of the plate. 13 are ears formed by bending the metal of the plate 11 at right angles to the said plate, said ears lying at the ends of the plate. These ears are provided with slots 14; parallel and coterminous with each other, arranged at an angle of less than 90 with the plane of the plate 11 and ending at their lower ends in proximity to said plane. The slots 12 are arranged and designed to receive the strap 10 which is laced through the slots in the manner shown in the drawings. Co-operating with the plate for clamping the same in adjusted position on the strap, is a member 15 formed preferably of heavy wire of suitable character which is bent into a loop 16 preferably rectangular in shape, said loop having one length thereof passing through the slots 14:, said length preferably carrying a roller 17. The side of the loop 18 opposite the roller 17 is preferably formed with a depending loop 19 which extends in a plane at right angles to the loo-p 16 and forms a part thereof. Spaced from the loop 19 and likewise formed in the side 18, is a further loop 20 preferably lying at right angles both to the plane of the loops 16 and 19 and constituting a projection formed so as to act as a guard to prevent a chain as shown at 21 from becoming disconnected from the loop 19 suflicient dis tance to permit the ready removal of such a chain or trace being manually removed from the loop 19 when desired.

With an arrangement such as hereinbefore described, it will be readily seen that the member 17 will be held in clamping position relative to the member 11 by the tension exerted on the loop 19 by the trace 21 or other similar member and that the binding action will be such as to cause no injury to the strap 10, there being no teeth or other gripping devices whichmutilate or otherwise injure the material of the strap. It will be also noted that with such an arrangement the adjust ment of the member 11 on the band may be readily efiected and that the trace may be readily disconnected from the loop 19. While the buckle of my invention is shown as used on the back band of a harness, it will be readily understood that many other applications may be made thereof within the scope of the claims hereto appended.

That I claim as new is 1. A device of the character described,

comprising a plate having side ears struck up therefrom, said ears being provided with slots arranged at an acute angle to said plate, a looped member extending through said slots and having a supporting device for a member on said looped member, the construction of said loop member being such as to permit ready release of said member from said supporting device.

2. A device of the character described, comprising a plate, ears struck up along two opposite edges having parallel slots therein arranged diagonally to said plate, a rectangular looped member extending through the slots in said ears, a loop extending from one of the sides ofi saidi first named loop and a projection extending from the same side of the first named loop adjacent the second named loop 3. A device of the character described, comprising a plate having ears struck up therefrom on opposite edges, said ears having parallel slots arranged at an acute angle to said plate, a loop passing through said slots and having fiorm'ed therein other loops spaced: apart 011 one side of the first named loop and arranged Witltfiheir planes at right angles to each other and to that of the first namedloop.

4. A device of the character described, comprising a plate having slots adjacent two opposite edges thereof, ears struck up along two other opposite edges, having parallel slots; therein arraii'g'ed diagonally to said plate arectangularly looped member extending through the slots in said ears, a loop extendirrg from said first named loop and a projection extending from the first named loop adjacent the second named loop.
