. ENDLESS ROPE BELnANn METHOD or MAKING THE SAME.
Application filed October 15, 1922. Serial No. 668,625.
, useful Endless Rope Belt and Method of Making the Same; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the acco1n )anying drawings; in which like numerals refer to like parts.
This invention relates to the method of constructing an endless rope belt, or a belt formed of cables or other similar material adapted for use as a fan belt for motors,or
. any machine equipped with V pulleys.
The main feature of the invention resides in the method of so constructing a belt of this character that the point of joinder of the free ends will be not only concealed but will be so arranged that there will be no enlargement of the belt at that point. To accomplish this the free ends of the belt are so interwoven therein as to be distributed throu bout ;the entire portion thereof, where y there will be no point of weakness in its tensile strength."
The full nature of this invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims.
In the drawings Fig. l is a plan view showing the completed belt. Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. 3 is a view showing a section of the belt with a portion thereof broken away for showing the interior structure thereof. Fig. 4 is the same as Fig. 1 showing the first winding of the belt.'
In the drawings there is shown an endless rope belt constructed of the usual type of twisted rope 10 having a plurality of strands 11. As shown herein the rope is formed of three strands. In forming the belt, the rope is looped according to the size of belt desired, the periphery of the loop being substantially the same as the periphcry of the finished belt. In order to hold the looped rope in position to ive the proper size thereto, the rope is tied together by a binding twine at 12. This tying is merely to hold it temporarily in place and need have no appreciable binding strength. In looping the rope and tying it in position, it. is so arranged that there is afree end ofa position,
length sul'istantially that of one half the periphery of the finished belt. This shorter I free end is unraveled to provide the several strands 13. being three in number' as shown.
herein. These strands are layed about the periphery of the body or central core portion 1 1 14, terminating at a p int substantially oppo site to the point of tying.- The-other end" 15, which is of appreciable length is then wound about the body portion of the core 14, as shown in Fig. 4, binding in the strands 13', As the strands 13 have been separated and lie about the periphery of the core 14', they take up no appreciable space so that the diameter of the finished belt will not be affected. Upon the core being wound spirally by the rope 15 through one lap thereof, the
winding is continued until, as shown herein, seven laps have been made, bringing the loose end of the winding 15 to the point of beginning at 12. The rope is then cut and the other end of the winding rope 15- is un's raveled to provide the three strands 16' which.
are thereupon threaded intermediate the winding 15 and the core 14 a. sufficient distance to meet end of the strand 13', opposite 12. This maybe done'by twisting'the winding. and thereby while the ravel'ed ends are threaded'therebetween and then, upon stretching the finished belt and pulling the winding into the free end will be firmly held in place. Obviously the tighter the belt is pulled the more firmly will the free ends thereof be gripped.
It will he observed from the above that in constructing a belt of this character the finished product will show no connected ends and there will be no enlargement at points or joinder, :nor any appreciable enlargement in diameter throughout the entire belt by reason ofthe interwoven strands. Thus,'an' endless rope belt of maximum tensile strength is produced having the same diameter throughout with no single or apparent point of .joinder.
The invention claimed is:
lcmsening it on the core 1. A method of forming an endless rope belt consisting. of looping the rope toform a core, unraveling one free end' thereof and arranging it to lie ad acent said core, winding the other free end about said core to pro,-
vide an outer'winding, unraveling the free ends of -said windingafter the completion thereof for providing a plurality of strands,
Winding for concealing and securing the same.
3., llhe method of formin an endless rope belt, consisting of looping t slope and binding it in looped position to form a core,'unraveling one free end thereof into a plurality of strands and arranging said strands so as misses to lie adjacent substantially one half of said c'ore, .spirally winding the free end of the rope about said core and strands making :1 plurality of complete revolutions so as to entirely enclose said core and strands and provide an outer enclosing winding, un-
raveling the free end of said Winding to form a plurality of strands, twisting said Winding so as to loosen the same about ssid core, and threading said last mentioned strands between said Winding core so es to be enclosed and clamped therebetween, and stretching said belt so as to pull said Windings taut about said core thereby firmly securing the free ends therein.
; In witness whereof. I have hereunto 'aflixed my signature.-
