COVER FOR CONTAINERS.

This invention relates to containers and refers more particularly to an improvement in a cover or movable closure forming a permanent part of the container.

The invention contemplates or comprehends more specifically a simple and inex-- pensive means for attaching the cover to a container by utilizing the bead employed for connecting the ends and sides of the can together, or the extending or projecting portionsof the side walls of the container.

With the above recited and other objects and advantages in view the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be more fully set forth in the following specification, pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that the right is reserved to embodiments other than those actually illustrated herein, to the full extent indicated by the general meaning of the terms in which the claims are expressed and by variations in the phraseology of the same.

A, sliding closure member 15 preferably consisting of a sheet of material similar to that of which the container is constructed is provided. The closure member 15 may be formed with upstanding side marginal flanges 16 which are received between the beads 13 of the container whereby to slidably retain the closure member 15 on thecontainer to permit the same to be shifted respectively into positions for covering or uncovering the discharge openings '14. 14. Preferably the closure member is provided with a manipulating lug 17 whi h constitutes an integral part thereof and is designed normally to lie in the same plane as the remainder of the closure. It will thus be seen that the extending portion of the side wall or walls which as shown are turned slightly inward provides a means for slidably holding the cover against- Ihe fixed end 12. 4

When the consumer purchases the container and desires to discharge the mntcnts therefrom the manipulating ing 17 is bent upwardly at a right angle to the closure 15 as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3. Ily using the ing as a manipulating handle, the closure member 15 may be shifted into its respective positions for covering or uncovering the openings 14, 14. As stated the extending portions of the side walls are bent slightly inward at their upper end to prevent accidental displacement or removal of the closure member, such bending forming a part of the operation in clinching the can and its end 12 together.

In Fig. 4 a modified form of the invention is illustrated in which instance the round container 18 is provided with a circular closure member 19 having an opening 20 therein disposed ofi' center, which opening is designed to register or coincide with an opening 21 of similar configuration provided in the container end when the cover or closure 19 is rotated. In this instance the closure member 19 is retained in operative position on the container end for example by the clinched bead 22 which secures the end and side of the container together. Although the term end and side walls of the container have been referred to. it is to be understood that the container may be or" any dimensions and practically any form and that the end may become the top, bottom or the side wall,

or vice versa.

It will thus be seen that a simple and effective means of assembling the closure member with a container is provided which contends to reduce the cost of construction to a minimum. and which eliminates the employment of rivets or other fastening or assembling elen'ients of this character.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:

1. In a can, a sheet tin top having edges securely fastened and hermetically sealed to the sides of the can body,said top being scored to outline an aperture without punching the top through so that said top provides a continuous sheet metal end for said can body without apertures punched therethrough, a slidable cover piece over said aperture, and means carriedby said top for slidably holding said cover piece in place.

2. The combination with a container comrising a body and an end attached thereto y a clinched bead, said end being adapted to provide a discharge opening or ports, of a movable closure-member for covering and uncovering said discharge opening or ports comprising a strip of material mounted on said end between opposite portions of the clinched bead and coacting therewith to ad mit of movement of said strip to covering and uncovering position with respect to the discharge opening or ports.

The combination with a container comrising a body and an end attached thereto iiy a clinched bead, said end being adapted to provide a discharge opening or ports, of a movable closure member for covering and uncovering said discharge opening or ports comprising a strip of material mounted on said end between opposite portions of the .tion of said top for opening clinched bead and coacting therewith to admit of movement of said strip to covering and uncovering position with respect to the discharge opening or ports, a bendable manipulating extension provided on said strip adapted to normally lie in a plane parallel to the top and capable of bending to an angular position for facilitating the manipulation of the closure member.

4. The combination with a container including a body and a top provided with interengageable marginal beads for attaching the same together, said top being adapted to provide a discharge opening or ports of a closure movably mounted on said top for shiftin to positions to respectively close and open t e discharge opening or ports, thesaid bead being bent inwardly'to confine the closure member against-separation and to permit of shifting movement thereof, as and for the purpose specified.
