WINDOW-SASH LOCK.
Application filed February 2, 1922. Serial No. 533,539.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN T. Pownns, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVindow-Sash Locks; and I do declare the following to be full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesa-me, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. This invention relates to looks for window sashes and other sliding objects.
his the object of this invention to produce a simple locking means that can be cheaply made and readily applied to a window frame for the purpose of locking the sash against movement in one direction or the other,
It is a further object of this invention to provide means which will permit of a rolling action instead of a sliding action when the sash moves in a direction opposite to the one in which it is locked.
In order to more clearly describe my invention or discovery, I shall have reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 shows a window frame and sash equipped with my lock, parts being broken away toshow the relative location of the lock;
Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the lock;
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the same;
Fig. 4 is a section of the lock, window frame and sash, and shows the relative lo- 0 cation of the parts with the members in locking position;
Fig. 5 is a View similar to Fig. 3 and shows the parts in the position which they occupy when the sash is moving in the direction of the arrow; and
Fig. 6 shows a key for controlling the locking member.
The same 'or similar parts are represented by the same reference numerals in the several views.
Numeral 1 represents a window frame of ordinary construction, in which is slidably mounted a window sash 2, while numeral 3 represents my improved lock which is constructed as follows: A plate 4, having parallel sides and rounded ends which form a housing, is provided with a rectangular opening 5, the edges of which are bent inwardly as indicated by numeral 6. The edge 6 on each side of the opening 5 is provided with integral tongues '7 which enga e in the corresponding openings 8 of side members 9, one of which is located on each side of the opening 5. Pivotally connected to the sides 9 by means of a tubular member or sleeve 10, which is hexagonal in cross section, is a cam member 11 having parallel sides 12 which form a recess or cavity and which cooperate with the tubular member 10. A spring 13 surrounds the tubular member 10 and has one end engaged by a hooked tongue 14, while the other rests against the insides of the curved gripping surface 11 and holds the same normally in the position shown in Fig. 2, in which position the surface of 11 pro iects a considerable distance beyond the surrace of plate 1-. I have cut an opening 15 in the arcuate gripping surface at a point somewhat more than half the distance be tween the longest and the shortest radii and nearer the latter, and on a pintle 16 I mount a wheel or roller 17 having a roughened or knurled surface which rolls upon the edge of the window sash when the latter is moved in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 5; this permits a freer movement and prevents the wear of the wood that would occur if the surface 11 were to be in direct contact therewith I My lock is simply inserted in a suitable opening provided therefor in the window frame, and if it is to lock the sash against upward movement, the lock is so arranged that the longest radius of the cam is below, as shown in the drawing. The spring 13 keeps the roller 17 pressed against the side of the window sash in the manner shown in Fig. 5, and when the window is raised the curved surface 11 will come in contact therewith and as the movement continues the cam will force the window sash. against the other side of the frame and positively lock it against movement in one direction while permitting free movement in the other.
In order to be able to raise the window at will, I provide a key 18 which has a hexagonal portion 19 which. fits the hexagonal opening in the tubular member 10 which is non-rotatably secured to the cam member and rotatable ,in sides '9. By means of key 18 the cam may be held aWa-y i rom the moving surface of the Window sash While the latter is moved. i-Iff t is desired to lock the Window sash against movement in both directions, I may employ two locks reversely placed in the manner indicated in Fig. 1
I desire to call particular attention to my roller 17, which performs an important functionin the combination as it prevents theexcessive wearoflthe sidesof-the-Window sash that would otherwise take place if the roughened surface 'of the cam Were 'to rub against the moving Wood.
Having now'described my invention What I claim as new is 1. In a sash lock, the combination With a suitable easing or housing, a drum eccentrically mounted thereiinsaid drum hating parallel sides, a sleeve secured to said sides and provided With free extremities which engage i ui zop n ngs in thessides of the hou-sing and form bearings upon which the'drum rotates, a coil spring surrounding h l eveyo ex rem y 1 :therspring being .-made fast to the drum, and the other eittremity to the housing, and a roller pivoted ito the sides of said drum and projecting through the gripping surface beyond the router surfaoelthereof.
2. In a sash lock, the combination With a housing a cam-like member having a substantially arouate grip-pingsurface, -.a pivot comprising a tubular sleeveseeured to said 'cain member atapointeccentric-Withres ect -35 to the gripping-surface, said camlike nim- Lber having an opemng in thegripping sur- -face, a roller *PIVO BELlly mounte'd on said cam and pi'ojectingthrough said opening, and'a spring for biasingsalidcam in onehdirection.
