Description

Sepig. 6 2- LIIEDI'N CYLINDER LOCK Filed Feb. 24 1926 ammup Patented Sept. 6, 1927.
" UNITED 1 TA PATENT O F C enemas mm, or, STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT,- ssreuon; To: was new rowns a MANUFACTURING COMPALIY,
or ;STA1VIFORD, CONNECTICUT. w
' ornmniin'rook,
Application fil ed Februafy 24;1 6;" f 1 90,336., a r f This invention relatesto improvements in cylinder locks, one'ob ectof the invention being to provide simple and'eflicientmeans including the utilization of the plug-cam, normally to positively lock the plug or turning member against rotary movement A further object is to so construct a cylinc der lock that the cam carried by the plug shall normally have interlocking relation 1 with the stationary shell or casing and be releasable from such relation by longitudinal movement of the plug upon the insertion of and lengthwise pressure on the key.
With these and other objects in. view, the
invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of'vparts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a viewin side elevation of a cylinder lock embodying my improvements is a rear end View of said shell or Figure 9 is a front end View of the plug;
Figure 10 is a rear end View of the plug,
and
Figure 11 is a view of the spring.
In the drawings, my improvements are shown as applied to a cylinderlock of the sliding tumbler type, but it will be understood that said improvements are applicable as well to a pin-tumbler lock, or any other type of cylinder lock.
The lock shell or casing is represented at 1, anclit may be provided with grooves 2, 2 to receive sliding tumblers 3 carried by the plug or barrel member 4 otthe lock.
The plug 4 is provided at its rear end with an eccentrically located stud 5, which provides a bearing for a roller cam 6. This roller is normally seated in one or another of open slots or recesses 7 formed in the rear end of the shell or casing 1 and when so seated, the plug will be positively locked I against- ;rotation, by cooperation of 5 said roller w ththe shoulders 7 7' tormed'by the end walls of sald slots or recesses. The
plugt is"longitudinally movable and ref tained in its normal position with the roller cam inaone of the slots, by thekactionof a spring 8; I This spring may havea general annular shape and made of spring sheet metal, said spring being so formed that portions 8 thereof will be disposed in a different plane from that of the outer edge thereof. The shell or casing 1 is recessed in its front end portion to provide one or more shoulders 9 against which the peripheral portion of the spring 8 is seated, the raised portions 8 of said spring bearing against the rear faceof the head 4* of the plug. It Wlll be apparent the spring 8 will operate normally to retain'the plug in the position shown in Figure 4 and when in this position, the roller cam will be seated in one of the slots or recesses 7 at the rear end of the shell or casing. j
If it be desired that the plug shall be given a half rotation in one direction only to unlock, the, rear end of the shell of casing 1 may be so formed that the shoulders 7 will be greater in depth than the shoulders 7 lVhen a key is inserted into the plug of the lock and pressed, the plug will be, moved longitudinally so as to release the roller cam from locked relation to the shell or casing- The movement of the plug will be suficieni to move theroller cam beyond the shoulder 7 but not far enough to move said roller beyond the shoulder 7 The plug may now be given a half turnas the roller cam will clear the shoulder 7* at one end of each of the slots or recesses 7 but its further turning movement will be arrested by engagement of the roller cam with the shoulder 7 at one end of the slot or recess 7 diametrically opposite the slot or recess in which said roller was normally disposed. Thus it will be seen that the plug may be given a half turn in one direction to effect unlocking, and then turned backwardly to normal position, instead of making a complete ro tation of the plug in the same direction.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is I 1. In a cylinder lock, the combination of a shell or casing, a longitudinally movable and rotatable spring-pressed plug, said shell or casing having a slot, and a cam carried by the plug and normally enteringsaid slot.
2. In a cylinder lock, the combination of a shell or casing having an open slot at one end, a longitudinally movable and rotatable plug, a roller cam carried by said plug and normally entering said slot in the 811611 or casing, and a spring normally holding the plug in position to insure engagement of said cam roller in said slot.
3. In a cylinder lock, the combination of a shell or casing having at one end diametrically opposite pairs of spaced shoulders. one shoulder of each pair being of greater depth than the other, a longitudinally movable and rotatable plug, a cam carried by said plug, a spring pressing said plug outwardly to maintain said cam between the shoulders of one pair and permitting the plug to be moved longitudinally to cause said cam to clear one shoulder only of each pair.
4. In a cylinder lock, the combination of a shell or casing having at one end spaced shoulders and a diametrically opposite stop shoulder, a longitudinally movable and r0- tatable plug, a cam carried by said plug and adapted to enter between said spaced shoulders and when given a half turn to engage said stop shoulder, and a spring cooperable with theplug and the shell or casing to normally retain said cam between said spaced shoulders.
Intestimony whereof, I have signed this specification.
