isn-
ANTHONY F. $AVAGLIO, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS ILLUIEINATEIO SIGN.
Application filed April 24, 19%.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANTHONY F. SAvAeLro, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of (look, State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Illuminated Sign; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and enact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to illuminated signs and has for its object to provide a device of this character comprising a casing, in which an electric bulb is disposed and opposite disposed glass enclosed frames for the reception of sign indicia.
A further object is to place translucent sheets between panes of glass at opposite sides of the light box, and on which translucent sheets various indicia may be placed by independent letters, or painted directly on the translucent sheets.
A further object is to provide means whereby the panes of glass having the translucent sheets between the same may be easily and quickly placed in registration with the frame openings at opposite sides of the light box and on top.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a front elevation of the illuminated sign.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the sign, parts shown broken away to better illustrate the structure.
Figure is a top plan view of the sign.
Figure 4 is a detail collective view in perspective of portions of the panes of glass and a portion of the translucent sheets disposed therebetween.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 1 designates spaced oppositely inclined rectangular shaped frames, which frames are connected together by means of a rectangular shaped casing preferably formed from tin. The casing 2 is provided with flanges 3 formed integral therewith and extending entirely around the same, which flanges are Serial No. 708,754.
secured to the inner sides of the frames 1 by means of screw 4, therefore it will be seen that a rigid and strong light box is provided, and frames are disposed on opposite sides thereof. Disposed within the casing is an electric lamp socket 5, in which an electric lamp 6 is provided, which lamp may receive its current from any suitable source of supply, but for purposes of illustration, a conventional form of battery is shown. It is also to be understood that any kind of a flashing mechanism may be applied to the device for intermittently lighting and c2:-
tinguishing the lamp 6 whereby it will attract attention. The upper side 8 of the casing 2 is provided with longitudinally disposed slots 9, through which slots sheets of glass may be passed to positions in registration with the openings 11 of the frames 1 where they may be easily observed from either side of the sign, for instance when a sign is disposed in a window, the same may be observed by persons on the street or by persons within the store. The sheets of glass 10 are held in position when in the casing 2 by means of angle bars 12, which engage the inner sides of the inner sheet of glass 10.
Disposed between the sheets of glass 10 is a sheet of paper 18, which is translucent, and on which sheets of paper legends may be printed, or placed thereon by adhesively connecting letters thereto, and which letters, when the light rays pass through the sheets of glass and translucent material 13, will stand out and be easily observed and read. The lower ends of the frames 1 are provided with rubber shoes 14, whereby the device will not scratch or mar woodwork, for instance a counter, or a highly finished woodwork in a show case or display window.
From the above it will be seen that an illuminated sign is provided, which is simple in construction and one wherein the sign may be easily and quickly changed by simply removing the sheets of glass 10 with the sheets of transparent or translucent material 13 therewith, and the legends on said sheets 13. It will also be seen that when the sheets of glass are removed that access can be had to the interior of the casing 2 for removing or replacing the electric lamp 6.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is 1. An illuminated sign comprising oppositely disposed frames, a casing disposed between said frames and to which the frames are connected means fer supporting an electric lamp in said casing, said casing being provided adjm n1 the if 2111165 with slots whereby $3981.: of glass 7 be disposed Within the i in regisi 'ation with openrenshicenc legend calings in the "111g member inter} osed set-Ween the sheets i aesed Within the cus- 1 'ith tee inner side 0i eiiiiaiii ig with U1 e. 1 Wsi'diy and 111M shaped fimnes "Eng (1' p etweeiz said frames, Lain, extendin entiieiy around the eppesite sides esii ind secured to the innerside :3 L l i of the frames, means for supporting an electric keep in sand casing and means whereby sheets of may be disposed in the casing in i-n-u'mn with the openings; m the frames.
