IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR=CHECKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,395, dated May 26, 1874; application filed April 11, 1.874.

To all whom it mag/.concerm Be it known that I, G. CHRISTIAN IDLY, of the city of Burlingame, in the county of Osage and State of Kansas, have invented a new and valuable Improvement'in Door Checks and I do hereby declare that the following' is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a sectional view of my doorcheek, and Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views of the same.
This invention relates to door-stops having combined with them devices for holding Aa door open 5 and it consists in a stop and clamp of novel construction for rigidly holding a curved spring-latch, and allowing this latch to be adjusted vertically7 as will be hereinafter explained. y
In the annexed drawings, A represents a door hung in the usual well-known manner. C designates my improved stop, which is secured to the floor in a suitable position to hold the door open. This stop I construct as follows, to wit: It is a standard having a broad base, through which perforations are made toY receive screws to secure it to the floor in its proper position. The perpendicular face of this stop is half-grooved to receive, at b b, the vertical portions a a of a spring, S, hereinafter cxplained. D designates a clamping-plate perforated to receive a screw, by means of which this clamping-plate is secured to the stop C. Into the grooves b b of this stop are inserted the vertical ends a a. of the spring-catch S, which is constructed as follows, to wit: It consists of the vertical portions a a, termi nating above in bowed portions c c, thus se curing the spring action, on the upper connected end of which a latching portion, c', is formed. This spring S is, moreover, constructed in one piece, it heingformed of a single piece of spring-wire, bent as described above, and said spring S is a friction-spring, the catching end thereof engaging itself with and disengaging itself from the latch on the door, by simply forcing it against the door-stop, or drawing it forcibly therefrom. Ihave also, by means of the vertical ends a a of said spring,
which I insert into the grooves b b on the perpendicular surface of the stop C, prevented any lateral play or vibration, by which the said spring-latch and the catchon the door would fail to become engaged the one with the other.
It will be seen from the above description, that by simply loosening the clamp-plate I can raise or depress the spring S -to any desired point of adjustment.
Gr designates a catch for the spring-latch S. This catch is applied on the door in a proper relation with the spring-latch S, with which it is to engage when the door is fully opened. It is constructed as follows, to wit: A bulging portion between anges, through which holes are made to receive screws, which secure said catch to the door. The under portion of this bulging surface is hollowed out to secure the catching end of the spring.
I am enabled by my invention to accomplish the following result, to wit: The catch G on the door, secured rigidly thereto in a position relative to the spring-latch S, in such a manner that the catching end of said latch shall readily engage with the said catch, need never be removed, since, should the door, by its sagging, or the spring by its wearing or weakening, disturb the necessary co-relation of said spring with the catch on the door, I can readily restore their proper relation by lowering the spring, in the event of the door sagging,
or raising it should the spring wear or become A stop, C, grooved vertically, in combination with the clamp D and the adjustable springlatch S, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
