Be it known that I, BERNARD R. DUTCHER, a citizen ot the United States, residing in New York. in the county of New York and State ot lfew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loose- Leaf Binders and Supports Therefor, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in loose-leaf binders and to supports cooperating with the loose-leaves and with the binder for aiding in their' manipulation.

My support is especially designed for use with a temporary binder or loose-leaf holder or book, and I have shown my device. in use with two forms of the binder; but the limprovements both in the cover and the supports are capable of embodiment and are desirable for use with other forms of temporary binders and in other relations where it is desirable to facilitate the handling of loose-sheets.

The main objects of the invention are:

First, to provide an improved support or device which facilitates the use of temporary binders or loose rsheet holders and particularly those in accounting systems.

Second, to provide a loose-leaf binder which facilitates the handling or manipulation of loose'record sheets when used with the above mentioned support.

Third, to provide an improved device which facilitates the manipulation and handling of temporary binders and the insertion and removal of sheets therefrom.

Fourth, to provide a single practical, durable, easily manufactured support of the kind mentioned above.

Other objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds; and while herein minute details of the invention'are described, the invention is not limited to these, since many and various changes may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as claimed. y y In the accompanying drawing, showing by way of example, two of many possible embodiments of the invention,

My improved loose-leaf support or tray is adapted for use with a loose-leaf book binder 5 (Fig. 2),- comprising' a pack of leaves 7, each having near its inner edge 8, a pair ot pertorations 11 equally spaced from said inner edge 8, and equally spaced from the adjacent ends of the sheet.

Said book binder also comprises a pair of clamping bars l12, yadapted to be' placed one on each side of said pack of leaves at said inner edges and each provided with a key hole 13 at one end` and with locking openings registering with the perforations of the sheets 11. A pair of posts 16 pass' through said perforations l1' and are locked in said locking holes by suitable locking means comprising a squared key-receiving arbor in said key hole 13. Binding or cover boards 18 are hinged to said clamping bars y12 and are adapted to cover said4 pack and project a slight distance at the top and bottom edges of said leaves, except at the elongated' recesses 19, the edge portions 20 of the recesses 19 being near or approximately Hush with the edges ot' the leaves.

The support itself comprises a pairl of side bars or members 25, and front and rear straps 26 having their ends downturned over the outer edges of the side bars and secured thereto, there being cooperating `straps 26 under the straps 26 having downturned endsv engaging the inner edges of the side bars and secured thereto. A U-shaped member or yoke 27 secured transversely on saidvbars has upturned guidestrips 28 for engaging in said recesses 19 and against the end edges of said leaves.

A pair of supporting strips S'LE'a'se/curd on the forward end of said side bars and are bent to form a pair of upright stops about midway between the front and rear of said bars 25 and adapted for engaging the forward edges of the clamping bars 12 when the book-binder 5 is held by the yoke member 27. Said strips 34 are formed with forwardly and downwardly steeply inclined forward supporting sto-ps 37, extending from the upper end of said stops 35 and formed with a forward turn or loop 38 joining upwardly and less steeply inclined forward supporting strips 40 2) which extend from said sto-ps 35 to the upper end of the front-end-supports 41 secured on the` forward ends of said bars 25; the purpose of the turns or loops 33 being to receive the rounded portions 12 of the edges of the clamping bars 12, which extend beyond the edges of the leaves 7 of the book-binder. About midway of said strips 40 is disposed a. U-sliaped member 41 having its yoke loosely secured as by a loose connection 42 formed by a bolt 43 liked to the strip 40 and loosely passed through perforations on said yoke 41 which is held in place by nuts 44 below said strips 40, the ends of said yoke 41 being upturned to form movable guide strips 45 adapted when the cover board 18 3) is rest-ing on said forward guide strips 40,-

'F strips 45 because of the loose connection 42 are movable outwardly, away from the stops 37 for the easy insertion and removal of the cover boards and` the removal of the book. The binder posts 16 are locked before the loose-leaf book is removed from the yoke 41.

The operation of the device is very simple.

A key is then inserted into the key holes and the posts 16 areunlocked. whereupon the posts and. the forward coverboards 13 are removed, and the forward cover board placed upon thesupporting strips 40, as in Fig.

The leaves or sheets are then taken up one by one or in groups and deposited on the forward cover board 18 with their inner .edges against the stops 37, the guide strips 45 positioning` the leaves on the cover board .or each other.

After all of the sheets have been placed in proper order on the forward part of the support, the rear cover; board is placed thereon, the posts replaced and locked.

After the posts are thus locked in place, both side edges of the book are exposed thus permitting the hands to grasp the edges of the book, the loose oint 44 permitting the cover boards and leaves to be first moved away from co-ntact with the strips 37 and out of engagement with the turns or loops 38.

Obviously, the operations above described and other features of the` invention will be found useful in many operations other than those relating to accounting.

In the form of cover board shown in Fig. 5, the recesses 19, and edge portions 2O thereof are reinforced by metal or suitable material.

Inv the form of cover board shown in Fig. 6, 'the recesses 19 andthe long edges 20 thereof are made much longer than the width of guide strips 45; and the yoke 41 is secured fast to the lower face of said strips 40, said strips 45 bein adapted when the cover board 13 (Fig. 4) is resting on said forward guide strips 40 to engage loosely in said recesses 19. Said guide strips 45, because of the loose engagement in the recesses 19, permit the cover boards to be removed outwardly away from the strips 37 for the easy nsertion and removal o-f the cover boards and the removal of the book.

28 or 45, as the case may be, these apertures preferably being reinforced by metal or suitable material.

Obviously, in relation to the modified form of cover board, Fig. 6, the guide strips of either a fixedly mounted yoke 41 or a loosely mounted yoke 41 could loosely engage in the long recesses 19', thus permitting great movement of the binder away from tho stops 37.

Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:

1. A loose-leaf book comprising a cover board provided with guide-receiving guide means in an edge thereof.

2. In combination, a support; upstanding guides at the sides of the support; and a binder having edge guide mea-ns engagingr said guides.

3. In combination, a support; upstanding guides at the. sides of the support; and a binder having edge means loosely receiving said guides.

4. In combination, a support; upstanding guide strips mounted at the sides of said support; and a binder having edge. recesses loosely receiving said strips.

5. In combination, a support; upstanding guide strips loosely mounted at the sides of said support; and a binder having edge restrips on said support and disposed in' saidV recess.

7, In combination, a horizontal rear support upright rear sto-ps; downwardly and forwardly inclined forward stops forward of said rear stops; upwardly and forwardly inclined forward supporting strips extending from the lower ends of the forward stops; a book-binder including cover boards provided with edge recesses and adaptedt'o rest on said forward supporting strips; and guide strips slightly spaced from and about midi'vay of said forward strips and loosely mounted thereon` and loosely disposed in said recesses to position the leaves of the book binder,

8.- In combination, a horizontal rear support; upright rear stops; downwardly and forwardly inclined forward stops forward of said rear stops; upwardly and forwardly inclined forward supporting strips extending from the lower ends of the'Y forward stops; covers provided with 'edge recesses and adapted to rest on said forward supporting strips with their inner edge against said forward stops; leaves on said covers; and guide strips slightly spaced from and about midway of said forward strips and mounted thereon and disposed in said recesses to position said leaves.

9. In combination, a horizontal rear support; upright guide strips at the sides thereof; an upwardly and forwardly inclined forward support; upright guide stops separating said supports; a boo-k comprising a pack of leaves, clamping bars adapted to be placed on each side of said pack of lea-ves at their inner edges, or to be separated and rested on said supports and against said guide stops; binding covers carried by said clamping bars adapted to cover said leaves and to be separated with the same and tio rest on said supports with the leaves thereon, and provided with end-edge recesses having their inner edges substantially flush with the end edges of the leaves; and guide strips secured to said 'forward support and adapted to be received by said recesses when the covers are resting on said supporting strips and bars, and the inner edges of the covers and leaves are resting against said stops.

10. In combination, parallel horizontal supporting bars; upright side guide-strips near the rear thereof; upright rear stops about midway of the bars; downwardly and forwardly inclined forward supporting stops extending fro-m the upper end of said rea-r stops; upwardly and forwardly inclined forward sup-porting strips extending from the lower ei'idv of the forward stops;

guide stripsslightly `offset from and about midway of said vforward strips; a pack of leaves; clamping bars having intermediate openings and adapted to be placed on each side of said pack of leaves at their inner edges or the clamping bars to be separated and rested on said horizontal supporting bars and sup-porting strips and against said rear and forward stops; binding cover boards hinged to said bars and adapted to cover said pack and project at the top and bottom edges of said leaves and provided with elongated end-edge recesses having their inner edges substantially flush with the end edges of the loose leave-s and adapted to receive said guide strips and bars; loose leaves each having at the inner edge a plurality of perforations registering with said openings of the clamping bars removable posts a'dapted to be passed through the openings of the clamping bars and the perforations of the leaves; and `means for locking the posts in said openings. ,A v

11.- A loose-leaf boolrcomprising a cover boardhaving an elongated guide-receiving recess in an yedge thereof.

12. A loose-'leaf book comprising,` removable cover boards, each having elongated recess in an edge thereof; and a pack of leaves between said boards having an edge substantially flush with the innery edge yoff said recess.

13. A loose-leaf book comprising, removable cover boards; each having an elongated recess in both end-edges; and a pack of leaves therebetween, each having its end edges substantially flush with the inner edge of said recesses.

14. In combination, side bars; straps for connecting the side b-ars and spacing them apart; a yoke member secured transversely to the side bars and provided with upturned guide strips; forwardly extending guide stops having supports secured to the side bars; forwardly extending supporting strips having supports secured to the side b-ars; a transverse yoke on the supporting strips provided with upturned guide strips; and a book binder; the book binder normally being in position on the side bars between the guide strips of the first mentioned yoke member and the supports of said guide stops, and being receivable againstvsaid guide stops and between the guide strips of the second mentioned yoke member and supported by said supporting strips.

15. In combination, side bars; straps for connecting the side bars and spacing them apart; a yoke member secured transversely tothe side bars and provided with upturned guide strips; forwardly extending guide stops having supports secured to the side bars; forwardly extending sup orting strips having supports secured to t e side bars; a transverse yoke onthe supporting strips provided with upturned guide strips; and a book-binder comprising a pack of leaves and cover boards therefor, the end edges of the cover boards extending beyond the edges of said pack of leaves and being provided With recesses therein; the 'book-binder normally being in position on the side bars between the guide strips of the irst mentioned yoke member and against the supports of said guide stops, the guide strips of said yoke member engaging in the recesses of the cover boards; and the boo-kbinder being receivable against said guide. stops and between the guide strips of the second mentioned yoke member and supported by said supporting strips, the guide strips of the second mentioned yoke. member engaging in the recess of the cover boards.

16. In combination, side bars; straps for connecting the side bars and spacing them apart; a yoke member secured transversely to the side bars and provided With upturned guide strips; forwardly extending guide stops having supports secured to the. side bars; forwardly extending supporting strips having supports secured to the side bars;

being connected by loops; a transverse yoke on the supporting strips provided with upturned guide strips; and a book-binder coinprising a pack of leaves, cover boards therefor, and clamping bars; the end edges or' the cover boards extending beyond the edges of said pack of leaves and being provided with recesses therein, and the clamping bars having longitudinal edges extending beyond the edges of the pack of leaves; the bookbinder normally being in position on the side bars between the guide strips of the first mentioned yoke member and against the supports of said guide stops, the guide strips of said, yoke member engaging in the recesses of the cover boards; and the bookbinder being receivable against said guide stops and between the guide strips of the second mentioned yoke member and supported by said supporting strips, the guide strips of the second mentioned yoke meniber engaging in the recesses of the cover boards, and the extending edge of one of said clamping bars being received in said loop connections of the guide stops and supporting strips. e
