BERNARD R. DUTCHER, OF NEVI YORK, N. Y., ASSGNR TO GRAHAM-CHISHOLBT COI- PANY, 0F NE/V YORK, N. Y., A. CORORATION GF NEW" YORK.'
LOOSE-LEAF BINDER.
Application filed January 21, 1921.
To all 'whom if may concern Be it known that l, BERNARD li. Dovrei-1ER, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loose- Leaf Binders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relate-s to improvements in loose-leaf binders and particularly to binding posts cooperating with the loose-leaves and with binder members aiding in their easy manipulation.
Nty improved posts are especially designed for use with a temporary binder or loose-leaf holder or book similar to that shown in my United States Patent No. 1,403,303, issued J an. 10, 1922, for binders; but the improvements shown are capable of embodiment and are desirable for use with other forms of temporary binders and in other relations where it is desirable to facilitate the handling of loose sheets.
The main objects of the invention are:
First, to provide a loose-leaf binder which facilitates the handling or manipulation of the posts for binding the loose record sheets.
Second, to provide an improved binding post which facilitates the manipulation vand handlingof temporary binders and the insertion and removal of 'sheets and prevents the removal of the binding posts therefrom.
Third, to provide a simple, practical, durable easily manufactured binder of the kind mentioned above.
Other objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds; and while herein minute details of the invention are described, the invention is not. limit-ed to these, since many andrvarious changes may be made without departing from the scope of the. invention as claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, showing by way ,of example, one of many possible embodiments of the invention,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a support with abinder thereon embodying the features of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmental longitudinal vertical sectional view of the binder; y y Fig. 3 is a perspective of .a detail of the binder; and
Fig. 4 is a face view of the clamp bar of the binder.r l
Serial No. 438,933.
My improved binder posts are adapted for use with a. loose-leaf book comprising a pack of leaves 5 each having near its inner edge 6 a pair of perfoiations or holes 7 equally spaced from said inner edge 6, and equally spaced from the adjacent ends of the sheet.
Said book also comprises a pair of hollow binder members 10 and 11 adapted to be placed upon the sides of said pack of leaves near said inner edges and each provided with outer orifices 12 and 13, and inner orifices 14 and 15 registering with each other and with the perforations 7 of the sheets. In the present instance the binder member 10 may be regarded as the locking binder member, and the binder member 11 as the` retaining binder member.` The diameter of the inner orifice 15 Fig. 2) :is smaller than the diameter of the other orifices 12, 13 and 14 for a purpose ywhich will be Within one hollow binder member 10, be-v tween the parallel spaced walls thereof, there is disposed a resilient vcla-mp bar 22 (Fig. 4) provided with a transverse headslot 23 open at its middle and having undercut opposite ends. Said bar is provided with-,r1
locking openings 24 approximately registering with said orifices and having divergent edges 25 forming slightly yieldable locking Jaws.
Posts 27 passing through said perforations 7, openings 24 and orifices 12, 13, 14 and 15, are each provided at the lower end with a retaining head28 adapted to pass through the outer orifice 13 and to be held by engagement with the edge of the smaller v orifices of the hollow binder member 10..'
A block 32 secured to one of said Walls adjacent to said head-slot a?) .is provided With a threaded hole longitudinal. to the binder member; and a threaded hey-shank 33 engaged in said hole arovided with a key receiving outer end, and at its inner end with cylindrical head in said slot engaging under the undercut portions thereof, and is adapted when rotated by a key, to push upon the clamp bar to bring said con# verging jaws or edges 25 into locking engage-ment With said posts 2T.
The operation of the device is very simple. The bound and locked loose-leaf boeitr or binder is placed on ne support With its rear corer board resting upon the side bars l), with the guide strips 36 engaging in the recesses 19 near the edges of the leaves, the forward edges of the leaves or sheets being exposed and their inner edges 6 engaging against the stops 35, the keyhole of the binder member 10 being fully exposed.
A key is then inserted upon the squared end 33 and the posts 27 are unlocked, Whereupon the posts fall and are held b v the heads 30 in the position indicated in dotted lines in lfig. 2; and the forward cover board 18 is removed and placed upon the supporting strips 39 as in Fig. 1.
The leaves or sheets are then taken up one by one or in groups and deposited on the forward cover board 18 between the guide strips d() with their inner edges against the n lo stops 37.
After all of the sheets have been placed in proper order on the forward cover board on the forward part of thev support, the rear cover board is placed thereon; and the posts Which Were pending therefrom as shown in the dotted lines of Fig. 2, are reversed and the head 30 is passed through the perforations 7; orifices 12 and 111 and rthe openir until the head 28 engages the edges of the orifice 15, after which the posts are locked in place. After the` posts arethus loch d in place, both side edges of the bool; are exposed thus permitting the hands to grasp the edges of the book for removal.
r)The enlarged pointed hea-.ds 30, when passing through the perforations 7, serve to aline the perforations and to guide the posts coanially therethrough with a minimum of frictional contact.
Gb fiouslv, the operations above described and other features of the invention Will be found useful in many operations other than those relating to accounting.
Having thus described my invention, claim:
