Be it known that I, JONATHAN Boomer, a citizen of the United States, residing at Menomonie, in the county of Dunn and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing- Press Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to printing presses, and more particularly to such presses known to the trade as Miller job printing presses, and has for its object to provide an attachment therefor for drying or setting the ink on printed sheets as they are being carried from the platen to the jogger box, and for assisting in carrying the printed sheets into the jogger box and preventing the same from curling. v j
To theV above end, generally stated, the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a Miller job printing press having the attachment applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail view of one of the brackets for supporting the attachment; and
Fig. 4 is a detail View principally in section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 8.
Of the parts of the Miller ob printing press illustrated in the drawings, it is only necessary to note the platen 5, jogger box 6, and grippers 7 which carry the printed sheets from said platen to the jogger box. Said joggerbox 6 has a front wall, as shown, of sheet metal which forms a partition 8 between the platen 5 and jogger box 6.
The invention includes a heater which, as shown, is in the form of a gas burner 9 comprising a longitudinally extended tube having a multiplicity of longitudinally spaced upwardly extended gas jets. Said invention further provides an air nozzle 10 also in the form of a longitudinally ex- Serial No. 581,456.

As best shown in Fig. 2, the gas burner 9 is located at the front of the partition Sandthe air nozzle 10 is located at the rear thereof.. A flexible gas pipe 12, leading lfrom any suitable source of supply, is attached to one end of the gas burner 9. Suitable means, not shown, will, in actual usage of the invention, be provided for supplying a variableA amount of air to the gas burner 9 at the receiving end thereof. A flexible air supply pipe 13 is attached to one end of the airnozzle 10 and leads from a suitable source under pressure, not shown. An air valve 9 in the form of a sleeve, is mounted on the gas burner tube 9 with freedom for rotation to control the air supply to the gas.
A. pair of brackets 14 support the vgas burner 9 in a horizontal position,A and a pair of brackets, each comprising a ixed clamp'- ing jaw 15 and a movable clamping jaw 16, support the air nozzle 10 parallel to said gas burner. The fixed clamping jaws 15 are formed by the rolled upper edge of the partition 8 which is notched at 17 throughout its upper edge portion. The brackets 14 and movable clamping jaws 16 are frictionally clamped onto the partition 8 by nut-equipped bolts 18 which extend through vertical slots 19 and 2O in the brackets 14 and movable clamping jaws 16, respectively, at the vertical edges of said partition. Primarily the brackets 14 and movable clamping jaws 16 are not perfectly perpendicular with the partition so that when tension is put on the bolts 18 it draws these into place with the air nozzle 10` securely held by the jaws 15 and 16.
The brackets 14 are provided; with open segmental seats 21 to receive the gas burner 9 which is secured in different rotated adjustments by set-screws 22 having screwthreaded engagement with said brackets. The slots 19 permit the brackets 14 to be raised or lowered to vary the distance between the gas burner 9 and the printed sheets as they are carried thereover by the grippers 7. The set-screws 22 afford means for holding the gas burner 9 in dierent rotated positions so that the heat from the jets of gas will squarely or obliquely strike the printed sheets as they are carried thereover by the grippers 7.
The heads of the bolts 18 are countersunk in the movable clamping jaws 16 and the slot 2O permits said jaws to be raised or lowered so as to securely hold the air nozzle l0 frictionally between the clamping jaws l5 and 16 to preventr said nozzle from turning. 1t is also evident that the air nozzle l0 may be adjusted so that the air jets l1 will direct the jets of air at the desired angle onto the lower end portions of the printed sheets a: as they are deposited in the jog'ger boX 6'.v
As best shown in Fig. e, the movable clamping jaws 16, at their outer edges7 are provided with laterally projecting {ianges 23 of substantially the saine thickness as the partition 8 which bear upon the brachets 14' outward of the partition 8. Froin the above description it` is evident that as the printed sheets are carried by the grippers 7 from the platen 5 over the partition 8 to the jogger box 6, the ink thereon will be driedv or set by the Vheat directed thereagainst from the gas burner 9.
By the use of the above described attachment, the operation of the press will 'be greatly facilitated by the drying` or setting' of the ink before the printed sheets reach the jogger box, thus making it unnecessary to place sheets of thin paper between the printed sheets to prevent the same from smirching, and the jets of air from the air iis-13,442

l. ln a printing press, the combination with a platen, a jogger boX having a part forming a partition between the platen and jogger box, and means for carrying printed sheets from the platen tothe jogger boxa or a heater applied to the partition at one side thereof and arranged to direct heet onto the printed sheets as they are carried thereover, and an air tube secured at the f other side oi the partition and arranged to blow air directly onto the printed sheets as they are being deposited in the jogger box.
