SPRING-LEAF LUBBICATOR.
Application filed August 16, 1923. Serial No. 657,738.
To all w ham it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM SNIDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hastings, in the county of Adams and State 6 of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Spring-Leaf Lubricator, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lubricators and more particularly to a combined spring leaf 10 spreader and lubricator, the construction of the device being such as to separate the leaves of a spring and hold the leaves in such separated position, to permit a lubricant to be forced therebetween.
Another object of the invention is to provide a spreader of this character wherein one of the spreading jaws is formed with passageways to direct the lubricating medium to its proper position between the leaves 20 to insure eflicient lubrication thereof.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a spreader which may be em ployed in connection with springs of various widths.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de- 3 scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a sectional view through a device constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the de vice includes a hollow body portion which 5 has an angular extension 6 formed with an opening 7. A portion of the body 5 is cut away to provide a clearance for the movable jaw 8 of the spreader, which jaw is curved as clearly shown by Figure 1 of the drawing, 50 and pivotally supported between the side walls of the body at 9.
The outer extremity of the jaw 8 is formed into a head 10 that is relatively wide as clearly shown by Figure 2 of the drawing,
the head being formed with a tapered inner edge 11 that is designed to move between adjacent leaves of a spring. Cooperating with the jaw 8 is a stationary jaw 12 which is also formed with an enlarged head 13 having the forward end thereof tapered as at 141, which tapered portion is also designed to move between the adjacent leaves of springs to spread the same.
The head 10 is formed with a plurality of passageways 15 that diverge from a point adjacent to the outer edge of the head where the head is formed with threads 16, adapted to receive the threaded extremity of the feed pipe 17 that has connection with a suitablesource of lubricant supply, so that a lubricant forced through the pipe 17 will be directed through the passageways 15 toga point between the adjacent leaves of a spring.
At the lower end of the jaw 8 are spaced arms 18 that are formed with openings to accommodate the pintles 19 of the threaded block 20, which block, due to this construction may pivot between the arms 18.
Operating through the angular portion 6 of the body is a rod 21 formed with threads 22 adjacent to its inner end, which threaded end operates through the threaded block to move the jaw 8 towards and away from the jaw 12 to accomplish the purpose of the invention.
Mounted on the rod 21 is a sleeve 23 formed with a curved surface 24 engaging the wall at one end of the opening 7 to normally close the body portion and restrict movement of the rod 21 j Positioned on the outer end of the rod 21 is a wheel 25 which may be grasped by the operator and rotated to cause the jaw 8 to move, when properly positioned on a spring, to spread the leaves thereof. From the foregoing it will be seen that the device may be readily and easily positioned on a spring, the tapered ends of the jaws being tapered towards the edges of the leaves so that when the rod 21 is operated, the jaw 8 will move between the adjacent leaves to separate the same, whereby the lubricant may be readily forced through the pipe 17 and through the passageways 15 to a position between the leaves.
