HANDLE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. DYE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Long Beach, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new. and useful Handle, of which the following is a. specification.

This invention aims to provide a simple means whereby a new handle may be mounted quickly, without the use of tools, upon the hail of a cooking pot or other utensil.

It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.

With the above and other objects. in View, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combina tion and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in side elevation, a device constructed 1n accordance with the inven tion; Figure 2 is a longitudinal section; Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 1; Figure 4 is a sectionon the line 4-4 of Figure 1; Figure 5 is a diagrammatic cross section illustrating the operation of the device.

The handle forming the subject matter of this application comprises two sect-ions 1, each of approximately circular cross section, the sections being made of wood: or any other suitable material. Cooperating longitudinal grooves. 2 in. the inner or meeting surfaces 5 of the sections 1 define a bore 3 in the handle. Adjacent to its ends, the handle has circumferential seats 4. The

sections 1 are cut away at their ends, and at their inner or meeting surfaces 5, to form entering notches 6. Prehensile spring binders 7, preferably made of metal, are located in the grooves 2 and hold the sections 1 together, the ends of each binder being spaced, as indicated at 8.

When it is desired to mount the handle bore 3, the binders 7 on a bail 9, the binders 7 are turned until they occupy the position of the binder at the right hand of Figure 1, that is, until the space 8 between the ends of each binder is located at the place Where the handle is divided longitudinally. Then, the bail 9 is passed into the bore defined bythe grooves 2, the bail passing through the space Sin each binder, and between the inner surfaces 5 of the sect10ns 1, an observation which will be understood readily when Figure 5 is noted. Owing to the fact that the notches 6 are provided, thebail 9 maybe started readily into place between the sections 1 of the handle, After the bail 9 is in place in the may be turned slightly, until both of them assume the position occu: pied by the binder at the left hand end of Figure 4. It is to be observed that in the mounting of the handle of the bail, it is not necessary to remove the spring binders 7' from the handle, the binders simply being turned until both of them occupy the position indicated at the right hand end of Figure 1. lVhat is claimed is 1. A handle comprising laterally separable sections having abutting inner surfaces, and prehensile' spring binders surrounding the sections, the sections being provided with superficial means for holding the binders on the sections, the binders having free ends and being rotatable in said means and on the handle, to space the free ends of the binders'from the inner surfaces of the sections, handle.

2. A handle comprising laterally separable se'tions having cooperating inner surfaces, the sections being cut away at one end to form entering notches coacting with the inner surfaces of the sections; and p-rehensile spring binders surrounding the sections and having free ends.
